Hard to believe but Arizona State starts spring football practice today. Hermie
obviously wants to get an early start.

Sidenote: Spring drills will have live tackling with helmet only...no pads.

This tread will be about spring drills and any information you want to provide
regarding players, etc...…………..Some interesting QB battles across the football
lands.

Needless to say, these six coaches need to have a productive spring drills because
they are definitely on the 'Hot Seat'.

Clay Helton (USC) - Pretty simple, Helton needs a big (bounce back) season or he's
history.

Gus Malzahn (Auburn) - 8-5 records and $7 million salary don't cut it with the Tiger
faithful.

Lovie Smith (Illinois) - Ridiculous hire and this dud has proven just that with his $5
million salary.

Willie Taggart (Florida State) - Most overrated coach in the FBS. I never understood
this hire by the Noles.

Chris Ash (Rutgers) - His offense averaged 13 points per game last year. Seems an
understatement but spring drills should be devoted to scoring points.

Randy Edsall (UConn) - His defense gave up an average of 50.4 points per game. One
might think defense will get some attention during spring practice.

I'm sure there are other coaches looking over their shoulder as spring ball gets under
way. Please feel free to list some...……………………………..

September 7, 2019 has LSU traveling to Austin to play Texas. That is one game I'm looking forward
too. The week two clash pairs teams in neighboring states that haven't played each other in over 60
years. Both teams have high expectations this fall, they do regular battle on the recruiting trail and
there's a tiny bit of history involving LSU and Texas coach Tom Harman, as the two were in negotiations
for the job Orgeron ultimately got. Both teams had top 5 recruiting classes and both starting quarterbacks
returning. LSU has 16 starters returning (8 offense, 7 defense, 1 special teams) while Texas returns 10
starters (5 offense, 3 defense, 2 special teams). Huge game for both programs.

Are my eyes deceiving my? Is it possible my wife's alma mater (Texas State) isn't in the bottom 20 this year?

I remember when East Carolina had a good program rolling. GA State should be better with all the resources, but still a relatively young program I guess.

SB nation did these rankings based on 1) current recruiting class 2) returning starters and 3) how team has performed the previous 5 seasons.

Curious to see last year's bottom 20 and wonder how these teams performed for the 2018 season? I wonder if we could find any "bet on" or "bet against" teams for 2019.

I actually thought East Carolina was going to be a "bet against" team last season but they werent so bad (i'm not doing research on this but i noticed many weeks last year where they covered spread)

With an eight-game conference schedule and a 14-team league, the 2019 season
comes down to who you play in the opposite division. Below is this year's cross-
over schedule for each team.

EAST DIVISON
Florida - Auburn, at LSU
Georgia - at Auburn, Texas A&M
Kentucky - at Mississippi State, Arkansas
Missouri - Ole Miss, at Arkansas
South Carolina - Alabama, at Texas A&M
Tennessee - Mississippi State, at Alabama
Vanderbilt - LSU, at Ole Miss

WEST DIVISON
Alabama - at South Carolina, Tennessee
Arkansas - at Kentucky, Missouri
Auburn - at Florida, Georgia
LSU - at Vanderbilt, Florida
Ole Miss - Vanderbilt, at Missouri
Mississippi State - Kentucky, at Tennessee
Texas A&M - South Carolina, at Georgia

*Auburn faces Florida and Georgia, the two top teams from the East Division.
*South Carolina has a tough two games in Alabama and Texas A&M.
*Missouri gets a break with Ole Miss and Arkansas.
*Alabama should handle South Carolina and Tennessee.

ESPN has come out with their Power Index Debut (FBI). The SEC has 3 of the top 5 teams
in the country, 5 of the top 10 and half of the top 20. Amazing for a sorry ass conference
who doesn't play anybody.

1. Clemson.....2. Alabama.....3. Georgia.....4. LSU.....5. Michigan.....6. Oklahoma.....7. Notre
Dame.....8. Florida.....9. Auburn.....10. Oregon.....11. Texas AM.....12. Penn State.....13. OSU
…..14. Michigan State.....15. Tennessee.....16. Mississippi State.....17. Washington.....18. Utah
…..19. South Carolina.....20. Missouri

*The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best
predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season. FBI represents
how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 10,000
simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule.
Ratings and projections update daily.

Alabama will head into spring drills with SEVEN new assistant coaches. In what has
become an annual event, Saban has to essentially rebuild his coaching staff. Here's
a look at the new Tide staff.

OC/QBs - Steve Sarkisian (OC Atlanta Falcons)
DC/LBs - Pete Golding (Alabama)
ST/TEs - Jeff Banks (Alabama)
RBs - Charles Huff (RBs Mississippi State)
WRs - Holman Wiggins (WRs Virginia Tech)
OL - Kyle Flood - (OL Atlanta Falcons)
DL - Brian Baker (DL Mississippi State)
LBs - Sal Sunseri (DL Florida)
CBs - Karl Scott (Alabama)
Ss - Charles Kelly (DC Florida State)

Spring practice starts next month so these new guys will have to hit the field
running. You can bet they are putting in a lot of hours now getting ready.

Kirby Smart (Georgia) has promoted linebacker's coach Dan Lanning to defensive
coordinator. Lanning will also get a nice pay raise going from $350,000 to $750,000.
He served as interim DC in the Sugar Bowl where Georgia lost to Texas and now gets
the position fulltime. Even with the huge pay raise, Lanning is not Georgia's highest
paid assistant...that title goes to offensive coordinator James Coley who makes a
base salary of $950,000. The Dogs will be the SEC's last team to start spring practice
beginning March 26th.

The FLORIDA Gators seem to be ahead of schedule under Dan Mullen, and they capitalized
on that momentum with a top-10 recruiting class in 2019. This is also a nod that Florida is
in the best shape among the "big three" programs in the state. Florida State is a mess, and
Miami has yet another coaching change. Now, the challenge for the Gators is to close the gap
with Georgia who keep bringing in top-three recruiting classes with blue-chip talent. The Dogs
have claimed back-to-back SEC East titles and are favored to make it three in a row in 2019.
Some think Florida is ready to challenge Georgia as representative of the East in Atlanta this season.
I'm not one of them, they have a ways to go before that happens.

Some updates...……….

*Former North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora has accepted an analyst position with Texas.

*Virginia Tech safeties coach Tyrone Nix is headed back to Ole Miss as linebackers coach.

*Michigan State has extended Mark Dantonio through 2025. He is 107-51 in 12 seasons.

*Auburn's DB coach Greg Brown will join the Purdue staff as corner backs coach.

*Southern Miss has hired Arkansas State offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner for the
same position.

*Colorado has hired Georgia defensive quality control coach Brian Michalowski as LBs
coach.

*Western Carolina coach Mark Speir has agreed to a five year contract extension.

*Kentucky has promoted TEs/Recruiting Coordinator Vince Marrow to associate head
coach. Ever wonder what associate head coach means?

*Shelby High School (NC) head coach Lance Ware is joining App State's staff as senior
assistant to the head coach. Again, what the hell does that mean?

*Penn State's special teams coordinator Phil Galiano is leaving for a position with the
New Orleans Saints.

*Ex-Virginia Tech quarterback Josh Jackson has transferred to Maryland. Jackson passed
for 3,566 yards and 25 touchdowns at VT.

*Jimmy Harbaugh is taking Michigan's football team to South Africa in May. Some wonder
why he doesn't just take them down to Detroit and save a hell of a lot of money.

Tuscaloosa continues to be the landing spot for former FBS head coaches wanting to learn
and hopefully get another shot at being a head coach again. The trend continues as Major
Applewhite (Houston), Mike Stoops (Arizona, Oklahoma DC) and holdover Butch Jones (Tenn)
will work as analyst on Bama's staff. The pay is around $30,000 but all three coaches are being
paid by their former schools. Two former analyst join the staff as fulltime on field coaches this
season. Steve Sarkisian (USC) and Kyle Flood (Rutgers). Jones had several opportunities to
coach fulltime but choose to return. He's still getting big bucks from Tennessee.

Alabama has been busy hiring coaches this off season...like seven new on-field assistants.

Regarding Leavitt, he and Christobal just didn't get along. They had problems going back
to when Christobal was head coach at FIU and Leavitt was at South Florida. Guys just didn't
like each other so Leavitt was finally sent packing.

Watch for safeties coach Keith Heywood to replace Leavitt as defensive coordinator. With 17
starters returning and a stud quarterback, Oregon needs to use spring drills to get everyone
on the same page. Lots of potential for the Ducks this season.

Red-Eye.....It's obvious you've been around football and more specifically West Coast football for a long time, what is the "real story" as to why (Pac-12) football is not playing on the same level that teams in the past have. We both remember when a USC or UCLA or Washington or even Stanford or Oregon (during the Mariotta era) would be actual contenders for a National Championship, the fact is the Pac-10-12 has had 9 NC teams dating back to 1954. None of this past greatness seems to be happening during the past 5 or 6 years....maybe longer.

You mention in your post that a Defensive Coordinated is needed at Oregon, why is it so hard for a program like the U of O to find a good quality coach in some backyard out on the West Coast.........I always though the West Coast was a hotbed for players and coaches....Heck, offenses were named for the area, "The West Coast Offense"...Albeit the 49's........Do do you think West Coast football (the Pac-12) will rise to the top again someday.

Is this Pac-12 "drought" a trend that could become even greater in the years ahead or do you chalk it up to a normal cycle that occurs with all college football conferances over the long years.. I would love to hear your take on all of this.....
