Depends on what side of the tipping fence your from. Kuchar states they had an agreement for what he was to pay the guy, and then dropped an extra grand on the dude. From my perspective you just won your first PGA event in four years, you bank 1.3 mil for the week, pay it forward, should of given him 40-50k! My first thought is Karmas a bitch but then Kuchar goes out and wins his next event in Hawaii. It will be interesting to see how the crowds treat him when he starts playing events around the country.

It's just a bad look. Kuchar has one of the biggest wins of his career and now it's overshadowed by this and he comes off looking like a tightwad cheapskate. He could have thrown the guy 40-50k and it would be a non story and that's probably more $$ than that caddie makes in a year.

Correct me if I am wrong but this was just a club pro that he used for this 1 tourney. They supposedly negotiated before the start for the flat rate right?? So if Kuchar had missed the cut this guy would still make great money. If they went with a 5 or 10% rule beforehand and he misses cut is everyone going to claim he should pay the guy something for his time??

It seems Kuchar is in a no win spot regardless so why bother negotiating. I thought I read Kuchar offered after the fact to throw him an additional 15k after the win.

Kuchar has earned over $45 million lifetime and that doesn't count his endorsements.

My opinion before this was that Kuchar was a good guy. Now I will never root for him again.

Most of the caddies get paid something and then if the player does well they get paid a bonus.

Tiger wouldnt pay a percentage but his caddies supposedly were well paid. His was not the norm on the tour.

The reality is this. The guy was some local caddie and making $3,000 or $5,000 or whatever the base amount was a big pay day for him. Where Kuchar went wrong is not giving the guy $50k after making over a million bucks. That $50k would have had a much bigger effect on that guys life than and extra $50k would for Kuchar. To make matters worse he tried to defend what he paid him with a comment that it was a good pay day for the week for the guy.

I hope the crowds ride his ass and chant Cheap Cheap Cheap ....instead of an endearing Kuuuuuuuuch. Karma can be a bitch. He is not going to like hearing the negative comments.

If the guy was just a bag carrier, then I have no problem with what Kuchar did but he could have been a nice guy and gave him a tip since he won. But if the guy actually did a caddie’s job and helped him club, give him accurate distances and read putts that obviously helped him win, then Kuchar is an ass for not giving a great tip on top of agreed price. To me, a caddie is like a waiter, where you tip according to how well they served you.

....
this isn't his first rodeo
kuchar has won over 40 million

as far as the "agreement", one would assume he was negotiating the week's pay. if the pga tour standard is tipping 10%, then don't you already think it's shady that someone would try to negotiate their way out of a customary tip?

Seriously?? Ok so if he told the guy you get 10% and he then proceeded to miss the cut. How much would the caddy earn?? ($0.00) Then you would be on here claiming how Kuchar took advantage of the poor guy and should have paid him something.

The so called “standard” you mention is more for regular caddies who caddy for the same players every week. And nothing is written in stone but most caddies actually get 5% when player makes cut, 7% for top 10 and 10% for a win. Since Kuchar did not have his regular caddy, the so called “standard” doesn’t necessarily apply. But he still should have tipped him, especially if the caddy actually helped him win and wasn’t just a bag carrier.

No this was a local pro/caddy probably making $100-200 a loop...no expenses like a tour pro caddy would have to handle..travel & hotel ++. Kuchar cheaping out on a fair amount of compensation after winning the event then referring to the guy as his "lucky charm" will be what rubs alot of people the wrong way irregardless of their agreement is the real real issue, and one I'm sure his sponsors wish he hadn't made.

that's not how it works
a percentage of the prize is given on top of a negotiated pay for the week
it's not prize money or nothing

nonetheless, a negotiation prior to the event with intent to use that as an excuse not to tip him by standard customs is a bush league move.

You are right, my bad. Although it seems like the rotating scale is for the full time caddy. I also read an article where it stated this guy doesn't speak English. Kuchar commented how it was great to play and not talk through pre shot routine. So maybe he felt this guy truly just carried his bag and did nothing else.

I wonder how Kuchar would feel if every golfer who cashed made the same amount whether they finished in 50th place or 1st place? Except the winner gets to keep the trophy. Something tells me Kuchar probably wouldn't like that idea too much.

Sounds like the negative PR/Media or guilt sunk in for Matt;

The request worked (eventually) as Kuchar ceded to public pressure on Friday (oh, and also did the right thing). Here's what Kuchar said in the statement.
This week I made comments that were out of touch and insensitive, making a bad situation worse. They made it seem like I was marginalizing David Ortiz and his financial situation, which was not my intention. I read them again and cringed. That is not who I am and not what I want to represent.

... I plan to call David tonight, something that is long overdue, to apologize for the situation he has been put in, and I have made sure he has received the full total that he has requested.

My guess is Kuchar's new statement is mostly damage control. Agent probably is telling him his sponsor's are not happy and it could cost him their advertising deals.

The owner of the company I work at....has a friend.....who is a good friend of Gary Woodland. (So not exactly first hand knowledge but some of the info he gets about stuff going on the PGA Tour is pretty accurate and often times comes out later as news). Anyway were were talking about it at work today and supposedly Kuchar's reputation on the tour is that he is Tiger cheap. Now that is saying something because Tiger is about as cheap as they come.

ya did Kuchar? which was cringeworthy?....this one?

[FONT=&quot]“For a guy who makes $200 a day, a $5,000 week is a really big week,” he said.

Kuchar may be the guy that has a $20.5 mill portfolio..but would rather have it at $20.55.....then $21 mill just to be safe.................so why be overly generous to some Mexican, as we had an agreement? the guy was just carrying the bag? ...

If he only pays him the 50 I read he still looks bad not paying full amount after his comments
