After a seven-season tenure with the Nationals that included a National League Rookie of the Year Award in 2012, an NL MVP Award in 2015 and six All-Star nods, Bryce Harper is now a free agent for the first time.
Below you will find a list of the latest news and rumors surrounding the outfielder.
Nats' Lerner: 'We've moved on' from Bryce
Feb. 22: Nationals owner Mark Lerner threw some cold water on the lingering possibility of a Bryce Harper reunion on Friday. In fact, he said the Nats have been out of contact with Harper and agent Scott Boras for months.
"I have no clue at this point what they're up to. We really haven't heard from them in a couple months," Lerner said in an interview with NBC Sports Washington.
"We've moved on, as I said back then. And we had to. There was no way we could wait around. Bryce, I'm sure, will make his decision hopefully in the next few days, but we've filled out our roster and, like I said, we wish him nothing but the best."
Lerner’s comments come after MLB.com reported Wednesday that the Nationals have no plans to give Harper a megadeal comparable to the 10-year, $300 million contract Manny Machado received from the Padres.
That seemingly leaves the Phillies, Giants and Padres as the favorites to get Harper, since the White Sox seem like they might be out according to recent reports.
As MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki writes, the Phillies were already feeling good about their chances of landing Harper, and they likely feel even better Friday, as they may be the only team willing to offer him the record-setting contract he seeks.
Lerner did leave a tiny sliver of hope for Nats fans, though. "But there's always that, the door's cracked a little bit," he said.
Could Padres go 2-for-2 by landing Harper after Machado?
Feb. 22: The Padres surprised the baseball world by jumping into the race to land free-agent superstar Manny Machado and then signing him on Thursday. But does that close the book on the possibility of the franchise signing the other 26-year-old superstar on the market, Bryce Harper?
According to MLB Network Insider Jon Heyman, Padres ownership will meet today to discuss that possibility. Even after signing Machado to a 10-year, $300 million contract, San Diego's projected payroll stands at around $110 million, meaning there is room to take a shot at inking Harper.
