After a relatively quiet offseason, the Colorado Rockies took the baseball world by storm on Tuesday morning. The Rockies have reportedly agreed to an eight-year contract extension with third baseman Nolan Arenado, worth between $255 and $260 million, per Jeff Passan and Ken Rosenthal.

Not really good for Rockies

ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals’ longstanding interest in Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado has seen significant traction in the past 24 hours and could be on its way to being finalized in the near future.
MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal reportedFriday night that the Cardinals have agreed to acquire Arenado from the Rockies in a deal that will involve cash and multiple players. Two Major League sources told MLB.com that nothing is final, and a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand that a deal might not be completed before the end of the weekend, because there are several issues that must still be addressed before the trade can become official.
The Rockies’ inclusion of a reported $50 million to help pay down Arenado’s contract -- an amount presumably dependent on him opting out or not -- would require approval from Major League Baseball, while any deferrals being made in the contract that will pay him $199 million over six seasons will have to be approved by the MLB Players Association.
Arenado is expected to waive his no-trade clause, but it remains to be seen what will be done regarding the third baseman’s opt-out clause, which allows him to become a free agent at the end of the 2021 season. Rosenthal, citing sources, reported that if the trade "is finalized, Arenado will keep his opt out after 2021, get an additional opt out after 2022 and retain his full no-trade clause." Any adjustment to the opt-out that would devalue the contract would need to be given a thumbs-up by the union.
Arenado signed an eight-year, $260 million contract with the Rockies before the 2019 season. He's in line to make $35 million per year from 2021-24, then $32 million in '25 and $27 million in '26.

Sad salary dump. They didn't even get a top 5 prospect in return! One of the worst trades ever. MLB needs a salary floor to prevent teams from trying.
