The Upala airfield is now looking completely renovated after an investment of almost $2 million USD made by the Technical Council of Civil Aviation (CETAC) and the General Direction of Civil Aviation (DGAC).
The Upala airfield had suffered severe deterioration after Otto Hurricane in November 2016; an intervention was necessary to fix and improve the conditions of the airfield.

“The administration of President Carlos Alvarado is absolutely committed to reducing the development gaps in the different territories, that are also generated as a result of the access conditions. The improvements to this airfield will revitalize the economy and open also the possibility of potentiating tourism to the region”, commented the Vice-President of Costa Rica Epsy Campbell.
The improvements included the expansion of the landing strip going from 11 to 18 meters (36 to 59 ft) wide and from 915 meters in length to 1000 meters (0.56 to 0.62 miles); improvements on the security borders, horizontal signs, rain evacuation and perimeter fence.
“Operational safety is the fundamental base for Civil Aviation, it is reinforced with the new infrastructure of the airfield, which will facilitate the access of operators to the region, easiness in the attention of emergencies, reinforcement of the country’s security and another option for tourism. This will also have a positive effect on local and national economy”, stated Guillermo Hoppe, Director of Civil Aviation.
