Santa Anita Park suffered a 22nd horse fatality since Dec. 22 on Thursday morning just one day after the main track was reopened for training. The horse suffered a severe injury and was euthanized. A track spokesman said a “major corporate announcement” is expected this afternoon.Princess Lili B broke both front legs at the conclusion of a half-mile workout, as first reportedby Brad Free of the Daily Racing Form and confirmed by The Times. Training will continue on the track, Free reported.

It was only the second day of training on the main track after Santa Anita suspended racing last week in response to the previous deaths.

No definitive reason for the rash of horse fatalities has been identified. After repeated inspections and dirt sampling, the rehiring of track consultant Dennis Moore and enhanced safety protocols, Santa Anita has been trying to move toward a resumption of racing on March 22.

I don't have any knowledge to share. But are drugs of any type involved? Years ago, I bet a horse in the Derby , named "I'll have another" and won plus again in the Preakness and won... Pretty rare for me... Was kinda excited to bet the horse in the Belmont Stakes... But he was scratched and this was to WIN the triple crown. I wondered if drugs played a role as I'm not certain, but don't think NY allows some or maybe any drugs?
The game is hard enough without drugs; with drugs involved---- next to impossible.

Does 19 for the year mean 19 for the meet? The meet is only like 7 weeks.

Not sure Mangelo a friend and I were talking about Santa Anita and he just said 2 yrs ago at Saratoga and the # of horses that died....I'll have to get back and ask him.....what part of Boston you in I'm up in Northshore.....city of sin...miss Suffolk Downs?......LOL

I'm in Andover, stretch.

I miss Rockingham more. That was only a few miles up 93. Have to go up to Seabrook now. Not near the same. Go every Saturday.

Yea, I miss the heyday of Suffolk. That's where I cut my teeth. I still go there a couple of times a year to meet up with my buddies from the So Shore. Third floor. Turf Club I think it is.

Of course I get up to Toga two or three times each meet. Love that place.

Those were the old days when lasix wasn't allowed in New York. It's allowed now.

There are drugs that hide the amount of lasix given. But most of these deaths involve fractures, rather than something like cardiac arrest.

Lasix is given to horses to stop bleeding or prevent it. The problem could be trainers are giving these horses to much of the other drug. BUTE.

Phenylbutazone (Bute) Use in Horses. Phenylbutazone (Bute) is an analgesic (relieves pain) and anti-inflammatory medication, commonly used for the treatment of lameness in horses. It belongs to a group of medications known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Running a horse all shot up with to mask the pain when they should not be running.

Just my guess. GREED.

Santa Anita and the Thoroughbred Owners of California reached an agreement Saturday that could pave the way for the track to open as soon as Friday. Santa Anita has been closed since March 5 after a dramatic rise in horse deaths, which is now up to 22 since Dec. 26.

While both sides have agreed to changes on medication rules, there is still the issue of getting the deal approved by the California Horse Racing Board. There is a CHRB meeting Thursday, but the medication changes were not listed on the docket and did not meet a 10-day public notification period.

The earliest a special meeting could be held would be March 28, according to Rick Baedeker, executive director of the CHRB. Baedeker said that Chuck Winner, CHRB chairman, is in favor of a special meeting as soon as legally possible.

“Whatever rules that can be in place legally, will be in place, but some [that are not yet legal] will not,” said Greg Avioli, president and CEO of the TOC, as to a possible Friday restart date. However, Santa Anita has made no public statement confirming the rules agreement or when racing might resume.

Initially, all race-day Lasix was to be prohibited under a proposal by the Stronach Group, which owns and operates Santa Anita. But the compromise position is that it will be applied only to 2018 foals, or horses that won’t race until next year. Horses currently on Lasix will be allowed to continue to receive the medication on race day but in a maximum dosage of 5 cubic centimeters, instead of the 10cc currently allowed.

Race-day Lasix “far and away was the biggest topic of conversation from top to finish,” Avioli said of the compromise. “But it was unanimously approved by the TOC board. And we had a call of 250 TOC members and no one objected to it.”

Arms Runner Becomes 23rd Horse to Die Since Dec. 26 at Santa Anita Race Track

The death of horse Arms Runner overshadowed Sunday's San Simeon Stakes at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, as he became the 23rd horse to die at the park since Dec. 26.
John Cherwa of the Los Angeles Times reported the news, noting Arms Runner fell during the Grade 3 race and was then euthanized after appearing to injure his right front leg. La Sardane tripped on Arms Runner but was able to get up.
Dr. Rick Arthur of the California Horse Racing Board confirmed the death.
Jockey Martin Pedroza was aboard Arms Runner and avoided serious injury, as did Ruben Fuentes aboard La Sardane.

According to Cherwa, 10 of the deaths at the track occurred during training on the dirt surface, seven occurred while racing on the dirt and now six have occurred during turf races.
Fox 5 San Diego noted Santa Anita reopened Friday after nearly a monthlong closure for officials to implement new regulations and inspect the track.
The California Horse Racing Board limited anti-inflammatory medications on horses and reduced the use of Lasix (which prevents horses from hemorrhaging) by 50 percent. What's more, Santa Anita officials implemented a number of measures, including transparency of veterinary records, additional out-of-competition testing and the need for trainers to seek permission to work a horse 48 hours in advance.
Arms Runner won his last race at Santa Anita Park in January.

Santa Anita should be shut down & they should redo the entire track. Is it a coincidence all these horses are getting injured & dying? The huge amounts of rain didn't help.

very sad. I watched this one live. they were on the turf going down the hill and it happened right where the main track crosses the turf. I think I read that they made the main track "deeper" after the shutdown last week. I love horses and racing but honestly after this happened saturday it was hard to watch another race at santa anita. its almost like I was "waiting" for the next horse to go down. just terribly sad. I prob wont watch santa anita anymore this meet for this reason.

I dabble in the horses for fun now and then, but I have a couple acquaintances that are every-dayers, and they were saying the exact same thing.
