Mariners top A's 9-7 in opener

TOKYO (AP) Ichiro drew all the cheers. Most everyone else on the Seattle Mariners did all the hitting.


A crowd that came to salute Ichiro Suzuki in his homeland saw Domingo Santana deliver the biggest hit at the Tokyo Dome, a grand slam that sent Seattle over the Oakland Athletics 9-7 Wednesday in the Major League Baseball opener.


Batting ninth and knowing he'd get two plate appearances, Ichiro popped up and worked a walk. The 45-year-old star took his spot in right field to begin the bottom of the fourth inning, then was pulled to another huge ovation. He was met with hugs from the Mariners on the diamond.


''The fans in Japan probably aren't used to the reception I got from my teammates, but it's not that unusual in the majors,'' Ichiro said.


Mariners manager Scott Servais said Ichiro will play in Thursday's final game of the series, but there is no guarantee he'll start.


''We certainly want to give him an opportunity to go out and play, but we also want to get some other guys in the game,'' Servais said. ''I understand everybody wants to see him go all nine innings. We're trying to do the best thing for the team and Ichiro understands.''


This marked the earliest opening day ever - the summer sport actually started on the last day of winter. No doubt, most fans in North America were sound asleep when Oakland's Mike Fiers threw the first pitch at 5:36 a.m. EDT (6:36 p.m. local).


A year after the Cubs' Ian Happ homered on the very pitch of the season, the ball again was flying.


Tim Beckham also homered as several Seattle newcomers excelled. Khris Davis, who led the majors with 48 home runs last year, Stephen Piscotty and Matt Chapman connected for the A's.


''It was great. It's a fun crowd to play in front of. Even the pregame stuff was exciting. I think everybody had a good time,'' Oakland manager Bob Melvin said.


A packed crowd of 45,787 was buzzing for its favorite star, sending cheers, chants and camera flashes for Ichiro bounding all around the park. Signs and Ichiro jerseys were plenty, too.


Ichiro became the second-oldest position player to start an opener, only a few months younger than Julio Franco was for Atlanta in 2004. Several of the players in this game weren't born when Ichiro began his pro career.


Ichiro is getting very near the end of a sensational pro career that began in Japan in 1992 when he was at 18. He stopped playing last May to become a Mariners special assistant - after totaling 4,367 hits on both sides of the ocean - and struggled in spring training this year.


Santana, one of many Mariners new to the lineup, had no trouble at the plate. His opposite-field grand slam capped a five-run burst in the third for a 5-2 lead and Beckham's drive in the fifth made it 9-4.


Beckham got three hits and scored three times. Also making a nice debut for Seattle were Jay Bruce, who singled for MLB's first hit of the season, and Edwin Encarnacion, who scored twice.


The Mariners won for the 12th time in 15 openers. They also beat the A's in 2012 when MLB last started in Japan.


Seattle starter Marco Gonzales hung in for six innings, allowing three earned runs and seven hits, and got the win. Felix Hernandez had started the last 10 openers for the Mariners.


Hunter Strickland pitched a scoreless ninth for a save in his first game for Seattle. Edwin Diaz, who led the majors with 57 last year, was traded with Robinson Cano to the Mets in the offseason.


Fiers, making his first opening day start at 33, was hit hard for three innings and took the loss.


NOT THIS TIME


After a lot of offseason talk about improved pace of play, the opener took 3 hours, 24 minutes. ... The Mariners had held opponents to no more than three runs in their past 12 openers, an MLB record.


TRAINER'S ROOM


Mariners: C Omar Narvaez got stung in the bare thumb on a fastball right down the middle after an early cross-up with Gonzales. Narvaez was checked by a trainer and stayed in. ... 1B Daniel Vogelbach was hit in the elbow by a pitch and kept playing.


Athletics: OF Nick Martini (sprained knee), who hit well after making his big league debut last season, is on the injured list for at least another week.


UP NEXT


Mariners: LHP Yusei Kikuchi makes his major league debut in his home country. The 27-year-old lefty starred for Seibu last season, then joined Seattle with a contract that could be worth $109 million over seven years. Kikuchi mixes a hard fastball with a tough, looping curve.


Athletics: RHP Marco Estrada makes his debut after signing with the A's. The 35-year-old was 7-14 with a career-worst 5.64 ERA last season for Toronto and was hampered by hip and back problems.

TOKYO (AP) Talk about a serious home-field advantage.


Ichiro Suzuki had it on a night to celebrate all things Ichiro - ''Ichiromania'' in other words - as he started for the Seattle Mariners against the Oakland Athletics in MLB's opening game of the season.


About 45,000 voices in a sellout crowd on Wednesday at the Tokyo Dome chanted his name as he took his place in right field. The scene is likely to be repeated on Thursday when the teams finish their Tokyo series. That game may also mark and end for the 45-year-old Ichiro, though no one is saying.


''I thought it was amazing to see the crowd come out here for him,'' Mariners second baseman Dee Gordon said after a 9-7 win. ''This whole situation is pretty much for him and he deserves it.''


Ichiro provided his usual flair early, catching a ball behind his back during batting practice.


Cameras flashed and chants echoed all around the park when Ichiro came to bat in the third inning. But with fans eager to see him deliver, he popped up with a runner on second base.


He worked a walk in his second at-bat in the fourth and, after taking his place in the outfield for the bottom half, was pulled from the game. He trotted off to another huge ovation and was hugged by Seattle players in the infield.

A half-dozen fans lined up just behind the third-base dugout and held up cards spelling out his name in Japanese. Another wore a shirt that read: ''Ichiro I believe - 3,090.''


A's manager Bob Melvin knows Ichiro from their days with the Mariners.


''Every time he comes to the plate, every time the ball is hit to him, there's going to be a lot of moments. A lot is going on that circulates around him.''


Ichiro went into the game hitting ninth - not exactly a vote of confidence - despite having 3,089 hits since joining Seattle in 2001.


Another fan was keeping count with his sign: ''Ichi-Meter, 3,089.''


And one sign had the clearest message of all: ''We Love You Ichiro.''


Japanese fans are hoping it's not the end, but they know it's likely. They also thought that when Ichiro played here in 2012 with the Mariners - also against the Athletics - and had four hits in one game.


He's had only 2 hits in 31 at-bats in spring training, including two exhibition games in Japan - perhaps the worst hitter anywhere this spring.


''Seven years ago it appeared he had played for the last time in Japan,'' Fumihiro Fujisawa, head of the Japanese Association of Baseball Research, told The Associated Press. ''I don't think anybody believed he would be active now.''


It may not last long. Neither the Mariners nor Ichiro are saying that happens next. But it seems likely he will not be on the Mariners' 25-man roster when the regular season resumes with a four-game series in Seattle against the Boston Red Sox.


He could be around, however, for two games against the San Diego Padres to end spring training in Seattle.


Japanese pitcher Yusei Kikuchi will make his major league debut on Thursday for the Mariners. It's his beginning and it could be Ichiro's end.


''Japanese fans secretly think that first game for Kikuchi might be the last one for Ichiro,'' Fujisawa said. ''We are afraid of that.''


Both managers said they are just fans on nights like this.


''There will be certain periods in the game here when you sit back and reflect and little bit, and certainly just watch,'' Melvin said.


Added Servais: ''It's exciting, it's fun for our team, it's fun for myself. What Ichiro has done is unbelievable. He's goes down in history as one of the all-time great players.''

— Menzies was 48-52 in three years at UNLV, 23-31 in Mountain West.
— Drew was 40-59 in three years at Vanderbilt, 16-38 in SEC.


By way of comparison, here is how another coach did in his first three years at his current job:


— Unnamed coach: 38-47 at School A, 13-29 in conference games.


In other words, if Duke had hired Mike Krzyzewski three years ago, he’d be fired by now.


12) A person who has money to burn bet $500 on the Baltimore Orioles to win the World Series this year at 1,000-1 odds. Orioles were 47-115 last year, so good luck with that.

Not every team has realistic hopes of making the playoffs this year, but you never know. At this time last year, I had zero hope of the A’s making the playoffs, but they wound up winning 97 games!!! Morton wins Rays debut over Astros, 4-2

MILWAUKEE (AP) Paul Goldschmidt hit three home runs and then was intentionally walked in the ninth inning with a chance to tie the major league record, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-5 Friday night.


Brewers manager Craig Counsell signaled for the free pass with one out and a runner on second. Cardinals fans behind the visiting dugout cheered as Goldschmidt approached the plate and booed loudly when Counsell made the move.


Just 18 players have hit four homers in a game, including J.D. Martinez and Scooter Gennett in 2017.


Goldschmidt had four hits and drove in five in his second game with St. Louis. The six-time All-Star was 0 for 3 with three strikeouts in his first game Thursday after an offseason trade from Arizona. Set to test free agency after this season, Goldschmidt instead signed a $130 million deal to stay with St. Louis through 2024 last weekend.


John Gant (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings.


Christian Yelich and Ryan Braun homered for Milwaukee. Trevor Williams (0-1) relieved and allowed Goldschmidt's second homer.


RAYS 4, ASTROS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Charlie Morton was solid in his debut for Tampa Bay, pitching five innings and striking out eight against his former team.


The 35-year-old right-hander, two seasons removed from helping Houston win a World Series, allowed two runs and three hits in his first start since signing a $30 million, two-year contract as a free agent.


Yandy Diaz lined an impressive solo homer off Astros starter Gerrit Cole (0-1), who also yielded three unearned runs in the third, when shortstop Aledmys Diaz's throwing error paved the way for Tampa Bay. Diaz has two errors in two games filling in for injured regular Carlos Correa.


Four relievers combined to pitch four scoreless innings for the Rays, with Jose Alvarado striking out Tony Kemp with two runners on in the ninth for his first save.

RED SOX 7, MARINERS 6



SEATTLE (AP) - Pinch hitter Mitch Moreland connected for a three-run homer in the ninth inning and World Series champion Boston rallied for its first win of the season.


A day after losing their opener 12-4, Boston bounced back. The Mariners had started off 3-0.


It was 6-4 when Rafael Devers opened the ninth with a double off closer Hunter Strickland (0-1), moved to third on a passed ball and pinch hitter Blake Swihart was hit by a pitch. Strickland got a huge out when Devers was nailed at the plate on Jackie Bradley Jr.'s groundball, but Moreland didn't miss a 2-0 fastball in the middle of the plate and lined into over the right field wall.


Matt Barnes pitched the bottom of the ninth to close out the victory for his first save since 2017. Brian Johnson (1-0) struck out the side in the eighth.


PADRES 4, GIANTS 1


SAN DIEGO (AP) - Manny Machado got his first two hits with San Diego and Ian Kinsler homered to lift San Diego to 2-0 for the first time since 2011.


The Padres came within three outs of their second straight shutout before Evan Longoria homered leading off the ninth against Phil Maton. Kirby Yates came on and earned his second straight save the hard way, loading the bases with one out before striking out Gerardo Parra and Brandon Belt.


The 17 scoreless innings to start the season by San Diego are the most in team history, bettering the 14 to open the 2008 season. Left-hander Joey Lucchesi (1-0) allowed three hits in 5 1/3 innings, struck out seven and walked one.


Machado went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts in his Padres debut on Thursday. He struck out in his first two at-bats Friday night before lining a single to left off Derek Holland (0-1) in the fifth.


ANGELS 6, ATHLETICS 2


OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Matt Harvey pitched solidly in his first game with Los Angeles, Andrelton Simmons hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning and the Angels got their first victory under new manager Brad Ausmus.


Mike Trout doubled in two runs, Kole Calhoun had an RBI single and Justin Bour drew a bases-loaded walk to spark an Angels offense that failed to score over the first 16 innings of the season.


Oakland's Khris Davis homered for the second straight day, but the A's normally reliable bullpen didn't hold the lead. Davis, who led the majors with 48 home runs in 2018, has three in four games.


Jonathan Lucroy and Brian Goodwin singled off reliever Joakim Soria (0-1). After Calhoun doubled in Lucroy, Trout was intentionally walked to load the bases. Ryan Buchter replaced Soria and walked Bour to force in a run. Simmons, who was hitless in the opener Thursday, followed with a sharp single to right-center off Liam Hendriks to drive in Calhoun and Trout.


Hansel Robles (1-0) retired three batters. Ty Buttrey pitched a scoreless eighth and Cody Allen worked the ninth.


BLUE JAYS 6, TIGERS 0


TORONTO (AP) - Matt Shoemaker (1-0) pitched seven sharp innings to win his Toronto debut, giving Charlie Montoyo his first victory as a major league manager. The Blue Jays gave Montoyo, an 18-year minor league manager, a beer shower to celebrate.


Justin Smoak and Freddy Galvis each drove in two runs, a day after the Blue Jays were blanked in a 10-inning loss.


Combined with Marcus Stroman's seven scoreless innings Thursday, Shoemaker gave the Blue Jays a team record for consecutive shutout innings by starting pitchers to open the season. Toronto's previous best was eight innings, set by Jack Morris in 1992.


Matt Boyd (0-1) struck out 10 in five innings.


ROCKIES 6, MARLINS 1


MIAMI (AP) - Charlie Blackmon had three hits and drove in two, German Marquez struck out seven in six innings and Colorado pulled away late to beat Miami.


Nolan Arenado and Tony Wolters each had two hits and an RBI for the Rockies. Colorado scored four times in the ninth to blow the game open, disappointing the few fans that remained from the 6,503 paid attendance for Miami's second game of the season.


Marquez (1-0) allowed two hits and one run. Adam Conley (0-1), the second of five Miami pitchers, gave up two hits and the go-ahead run in the seventh. Marlins starter Trevor Richards gave up four hits and one run in six innings.


Curtis Granderson hit his first homer for Miami, which has four runs this season - all off solo homers. Lewis Brinson nearly tied it for Miami in the eighth, but his fly to nearly straightaway center field in cavernous Marlins Park was caught near the top of the wall by a leaping Ian Desmond.

13) Auburn 97, North Carolina 80— Didn’t see this coming. Since 1993, Tar Heels were 13-1 in this round; not sure if Nassir Little’s illness was a factor, but the whole team looked sick and kind of lackluster.


NCAA enforcement people must be thrilled; Auburn had one assistant coach indicted last year, another one has been suspended as part of the adidas payoff scandal. Now the Tigers are in the Elite 8 for only the second time (1986). Go figure.


Bad news for Auburn; they lost F Chuma Okeke with a knee injury that the Auburn people said was likely a serious one.


12) Duke 75, Virginia Tech 73— Understood that this is irrelevent, but Duke is 0-3 vs spread in this tournament, 3-12 vs spread in their last 15 games. Tre Jones was shooting 23.2% on the arc before this game; he went 5-7 Friday and saved the Blue Devils’ butts.


Buzz Williams is supposedly off to Texas A&M next season; if he doesn’t already have a deal with the Aggies, his price tag probably went up a little during this game.


11) Michigan State 80, LSU 63— Spartans get to the Elite 8 for first time in four years; since 2005, Izzo is 4-1 in Elite 8 games. As for LSU, their search for a new coach heads into high gear, since HC Will Wade is also part of the adidas debacle.


10) Kentucky 62, Houston 58— Tyler Herro scored the last five points of the game; Kentucky will play SEC rival Auburn in the regional final Sunday.


9) Cardinals 9, Brewers 5— In his second game for the Cardinals, Paul Goldschmidt hit three home runs.


8) Opening Day rosters in the major leagues have 251 players who were born outside this country, representing 20 different countries and territories.


7) Coaching carousel:
— Cal Bears hired former Nevada/Georgia coach Mark Fox.


6) Brewers closer Corey Knebel will undergo Tommy John surgery next week; Josh Hader is expected to do most of the closing for Milwaukee.


5) Angels OF Justin Upton will be out 8-12 weeks (turf toe).


4) West Virginia could have eight returning basketball players next season, but four of them put their names in the transfer portal, which means they might transfer. They don’t have to, but obviously they’re looking into it. Mountaineers could have as many as nine scholarships open.


3) This was Virginia’s third Sweet 16 in the last six years; it is their second Elite 8. In the 13 years before Tony Bennett got to Charlottesville, Virginia won a total of one NCAA tournament game.


2) Colorado 6, Miami 1— CF Ian Desmond robbed Lewis Brinson of a game-tying homer in the 8th inning, then the Rockies tacked on four runs in the ninth. Strong outing for Colorado P Marquez, who is very good away from Coors Field.


1) Memo to directors of televised baseball games; on fly balls, show the outfielder, not the ball. The outfielder(s) will tell you where the ball is going. Showing the ball in the air is useless.

13) Texas Tech 75, Gonzaga 69— Red Raiders make their first-ever trip to the Final Four. Gonzaga was in Elite 8 for third time in five years; they’re 1-2 in Elite 8 games.


It is easy to sit here and say that Texas Tech was toughened up by playing in a better league than Gonzaga plays in— Zags thrash everyone in their league every year. Not sure thats why Tech won this game, but they’re athletic as hell and they play very good defense.


Red Raiders also lost five of their top seven players from last year’s team; to make the Final Four with that much turnover on your roster is very impressive.


12) This trend has legs, but I’m not sure why. Over the last 22 years, underdogs are now 18-4 vs spread in the final of the West Region, 13-9 SU.


11) Virginia 80, Purdue 75 OT— Tremendous game. Damn shame someone had to lose.


Purdue’s Carsen Edwards scored 42 points, with no assists; not sure why he passed the ball on their last possession, but he threw the ball away. Amazing shooting performance.


Over the last 40 years, Purdue has had only two basketball coaches, Gene Keady, Matt Painter; Drake and Siena have had three coaches the last three years.

4) There is a gambling thing in Las Vegas that is a little weird; in NCAA tourney games, you can bet on which team will get to 15 points first. Random wager to create more action.


I was at the MGM Grand for the 2010 NCAA’s, and I’m watching Northern Iowa, and some kid makes a basket- the three young guys next to me start jumping up and down and hugging each other. I actually asked them if the kid that scored was their brother.


They explained that they won their “first to 15” bet. Had never heard of it before. If you had a lot of extra time, you could research all that, but not even I would enjoy researching all that.


3) When Jacob deGrom/Max Scherzer both struck out 10+ guys Thursday, it was only the second time EVER that both starters struck out 10+ on Opening Day.


Back in 1970 in an Orioles-Indians opener, Dave McNally and Sam McDowell both struck out 10+, and McNally wasn’t a big strikeout guy.


2) Crowds at Rockies-Marlins in Miami? 6,503 Friday, 7,642 Saturday.


Colorado’s Daniel Murphy broke a finger on his left hand Friday, is going on the DL.


1) Diamondbacks 5, Dodgers 4 (13)— This Friday night game lasted until 4:13am Saturday morning; at one point, the home plate ump got drilled in the mask by a pitch that totally crossed up the catcher- he left the game couple innings later, after the 11th inning.


This was longest regular season game, in terms of time, in Dodger Stadium history.

A look at what's happening around the majors Sunday:


$140 MILLION MAN


Patrick Corbin begins earning the $140 million contract he signed with the Nationals, making his first start for his new team against the visiting Mets. The 29-year-old lefty was considered the top starting pitcher on the free agent market and got a six-year deal to slot in behind Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg. The Nationals couldn't win behind either Scherzer or Strasburg in the first two games of the season, though, and they'll be hoping Corbin can prevent a sweep and an 0-3 start.


After have to fight for his roster spot throughout spring training, Mets rookie slugger Pete Alonso is fast rewarding New York for giving him the job at first base. Alonso had three hits Saturday in an 11-8 win and is 4 for 8 in his first two big league games. Criticized often for his glove work as a minor leaguer, Alonso even made two nifty stretch plays at first in his second game. Zack Wheeler tries to pitch the Mets to 3-0.


BRYCE ON THE BOARD


Bryce Harper and the Phillies conclude their first series a day after he hit a mammoth home run and got a rather enthusiastic curtain call for the second game of the season. Harper's homer was projected to 465 feet, traveling well into the second deck in right-center field at Citizens Bank Park. The crowd responded with a long ovation, including the Phillie Phanatic, who wore cleats bearing Harper's face after Harper did the same for the green, fuzzy mascot in his Phillies debut. RHP Jake Arrieta is scheduled to start for Philadelphia against Braves rookie RHP Kyle Wright.


It will be the first of the ESPN Sunday night telecasts that start an hour earlier this season.


LATE START


The Astros hope to get Carlos Correa back at shortstop after he missed the season's first three games with neck stiffness. Aledmys Diaz filled in for the first two games against Tampa Bay and made two errors. Alex Bregman slid over from third to short Saturday and hit his first homer of the season on his 25th birthday. Correa dealt with back pain throughout the 2018 season, setting career lows with a .239 average, 15 homers and a .728 OPS. Veteran lefty Wade Miley is slated to make his first start with the Astros after signing a $4.5 million, one-year free agent deal. Tampa Bay was expected to use an opener for the first time this season, but manager Kevin Cash said Saturday night that Yonny Chirinos will be used as a traditional starter instead.


WELCOME BACK


Twins RHP Michael Pineda will step onto a major league mound for the first time since July 5, 2017, when he was pitching for the Yankees. He had Tommy John surgery later that month, signed with the Twins in the offseason, and spent all of 2018 on the disabled list. Pineda pitched a team-high 20 1/3 innings in spring training and struck out 20. He'll face Cleveland RHP Carlos Carrasco, who is coming off a year in which he set a career high with 231 strikeouts in 192 innings.


ONE-SIDED WEEKEND


The Blue Jays and Tigers are set to finish a four-game series after each of the first three ended in a shutout. The Tigers won 2-0 on opening day, and the Blue Jays followed with 6-0 and 3-0 victories. Toronto threw just three shutouts all of last season, the fewest in the majors. Detroit was last with two. Matt Moore is set to make his first start with Detroit, and Trent Thornton is tabbed to make his major league debut for the Jays.


Tigers star Miguel Cabrera left Saturday's game after being hit on the right hand by a pitch. X-rays were negative.
