2019 Alabama football coaches contracts

Contracts for the ten new and returning Bama assistant football coaches were approved
this week. The total pay is $7,541,277, up more than $1.5 million from the $5.960,000
a year ago. In addition, Alabama agreed to pay $560,000 in buyouts on behalf of four
assistants it hired from other schools as part of an overhaul of last season's staff. Head
man Nick Saban will earn $7.500,000 in base compensation this season. Here's a list
of what his 10 assistants will earn in salary for 2019 (excludes bonus money).

OC - Steve Sarkisian - $1.550,000
DC - Pete Golding - $1,100,000
DB - Charles Kelley - $800,000
DL - Brian Baker - $750,000
LB - Sal Sunseri - $650,000
OL - Kyle Flood - $650,000
RB - Charles Huff - $550,000
TE - Jeff Banks - $541,277
DB - Karl Scott - $525,000
WR - Holmon Wiggins - $450,000

Strength coach Scott Cochran will make $595,000 and head trainer Jeff Allen $235,000.

Clemson will pay its 10 assistants a total of $7,395,000, while Ohio State shells out
$7,245,000 for comparison.

Bama coaches will have a solid nucleus of players to work with during spring drills.
Here's a look at how much production returns from the 2018 season in different
phases of the game.

Offensive Starts Returning: 95
Passing Yards Returning: 4,089
Rushing Yards Returning: 1,260
Receiving Yards Returning: 3,604
Offensive Line Starts Returning: 35

Defensive Starts Returning: 89
Tackles Returning: 536
Tackles for Loss Returning: 50.5
Sacks Returning: 18
Passes Defended Returning: 59

Easy to see Bama returns a ton of offensive skill position talent.

Now if we can just find a frecken kicker. Bama coaches have been awesome recruiting players but
for some reason, no top notch consistent kicker. Hell, our kicker missed 6 extra points during 2018.

Saban signed a top rated kicker who will compete for the job...let's see how he works out.

Recruiting has been the lifeblood of Alabama's success under Saban and the Tide
are off to a good start for the 2020 recruiting class. Maryland 5-star defensive
end Chris Braswell gives Bama an elite centerpiece to the start of their top-ranked
'20 class. The class of 12 players so far consist of Braswell and 11 4-star prospects.
Looks like another dominate class headed to Tuscaloosa.

One has to think Alabama is extra motivated this spring after the loss to Clemson in
the title game. The pieces are there for another trip with a loaded offense and what
many believe will be a top notch defense. Bama will get an early scrimmage against
Duke before playing six of the next eight games at home. The toughest road trips are
at Texas A&M and Mississippi State before traveling to Auburn for the Iron Bowl. The
schedule and talent lines up for what has become an annual event: Alabama appearing
in the College Football Playoff.

Bama just wrapped up its sixth practice Tuesday. There will be another one today before
the team's first scrimmage Saturday in Bryant-Denny Stadium. The A-Day game is then
two weeks away. The game will be televised by ESPN (April 13) with a 1 p.m. central start.

All reports indicate spring practice is going well. Saban seems to be happy with the players
effort and his new staff's teaching skills. If Nick is happy...spring drills must be going well
...at least so far.

Alabama's wide receivers can be described as talented, stacked and deep. Most consider
this year's receiving corps the best in the SEC and maybe the entire country. It has elite
experienced starters and blue-chip back-ups. The group is led by JERRY JEUDY (Jr) who
won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's best receiver last year. He had 68 catches for
1,315 yards (19 ypc) and 14 touchdowns. Junior HENRY RUGGS would be the unquestioned
No. 1 receiver on most teams. The speedy Ruggs was clocked at 4.25 in the 40 at Bama's
junior pro day. He finished 2018 with 46 catches and 741 yards. JAYLEN WADDLE (Soph)
as a true freshman was second on the team with 848 yards and also returns punts. DEVONTA
SMITH (Jr.) had 42 receptions, 693 yards and 6 TDs despite having injury problems. TYRELL
SHAVERS (Soph) was injured part of last year but the speedy 6'6, 210 pounder who runs a
4.38 40 is looking for a break-out season. Add in RS freshman XAVIER WILLIAMS and true
freshman JOHN METCHIE and the Tide has one talented, stacked and deep group of receivers.

My comments?

I like Clemson's staff. We lost two excellent DL coaches after 2016, but we brought in two Alabama guys in Todd Bates and Lemanski Hall, and they're doing a great job. Other than that, we've had very few staff changes since Venables came on board after 2011. The recruiting is continuing to ramp up, the talent development is good, and the coordinators badly outcoached Bama's staff last year. You won't find many complaints about Clemson's assistant coaches from Clemson fans.

One positive for Clemson is Dabo has been able to keep his staff together. Not like Alabama where 7 new assistants
joined the staff this year. DC Brent Venables (7 years), OC Tony Elliott (6 years), WR Jeff Scott (9 years), OL Robbie
Caldwell (6 years), ST/TE Danny Perryman (10 years), DB Mike Reed (4 years), DB Mickey Conn (3 years), DL Todd
Bates (3 years), DE Lemanski Hall (3 years) QB Brandon Streeter (5 years). Pretty damn impressive in this day and
time. Obviously the coaches love living in Clemson, love the school and are paid well. Has to be a positive for Clemson's
success of late.

NFL Draft (April 25-27) - No one puts more players in the NFL than Bama's Nick
Saban. At the opening day of the 2018 season, 44 Tide players were on NFL rosters,
the most in the nation. After the 2019 Draft, up to 15 more will join those 44 later
this month. Take a look.

Qualities of an Elite Coaching Staff

1. Everyone's opinions are valued.
(Great coaching staffs aren't full of "yes men.")

2. Each coach understands their roles and expectations.
(Each coach should know what's on his plate early on.)

3. Coaches are given the freedom to be themselves.
(HC has to understand what type of personalities he wants on his staff.)

4. Everyone is putting comparable amounts of "sweat in the bucket."
(Good staffs are made up of guys that are putting in the same amount of work.)

5. The coaches and their families enjoy spending time together off the field.
(Create an environment where coaches and their families want to be. Clemson is a great example.)

6. Every member of the staff understands that it's about the players.
(Be wary of guys that make it about them or are always focused on the next job.)

7. Coaches feel empowered.
(Coaches need to make important decisions about the program.)

8. The staff compliments the weakness of the head coach and each other.
(Having guys that help fill in the cracks will go a long way in strengthening the staff.)

I'm not sure who wrote this but it makes a lot of sense to me.

Alabama's A-Day spring game is set for 2 p.m. tomorrow inside Bryant-Denny
Stadium. ESPN will televise the matchup that features Bama's first-team offense
and second-team defense against its first-team defense and second-team offense.
Fans will get a glimpse at who will be the backup quarterback. How the front seven
looks, how the secondary holds up against the best receiving corps in the SEC, and
how the new coaches perform under game like conditions. Alabama's first teams
on offense and defense are solid but depth is needed in key areas. Good spot for
backups to highlight themselves during the game.

To be fair, y'all did score a lot of touchdowns, and he was 5-5 in your only close game.
