My TV is failing on me, picture giving me problems, I thought my eyes were getting worse until I realized it was the TV , not me

I'm not completely ignorant on the subject but I Know there are plenty of people here with far better knowledge about electronics.

What I'm replacing is a 32" Samsung that I bought from Walmart about 8 years ago for around $250 if memory serves, I'm sure it's just 720 pixels , the price was low then

I could replace it with another Walmart cheapie a similar enough 720 pixel set is $89.99 shipped.that's a Sceptre brand item, I could go all the way up to a 50", 1080 pixel set in that brand for $199.99 shipped

I know a lot about how Walmart operates, I used to work for them. They are so big they can get manufacturers to custom make stuff to their specifications, usually the model number starts with wm. You therefore can't compare their prices to any other retailer because nobody else has the exact same item.

What I want help with is some of the terminology now in use, like class HD, FHD, 4k and so on . I know about pixels.

I don't believe I need a smart TV. The things I care about are picture quality, a decent enough sound , as long it doesn't sound like a cheap clock-radio that's good enough and price

I'd like to do this in April my budget is already stressed that month with an unplanned bill coming, I can swing no more than $200 for this or wait until May . I don't want to wait that long, I can't deal with this picture much longer.

I really don't need a hugs TV, perhaps upsize to something in the 37-40 inch range. I am tempted by the Walmart Sceptre 50", 1080 pixel deal, 50" is the max size I'd do. I am reluctant to buy electronics there, not my first choice. Some people will buy stuff like this anywhere.Occasionally the grocery store I frequently visit offers a big screen TV like a 50 or 55 inch at a low price and they have a pallet of them on display. I think to myself who buys their TV at ShopRite ? But somebody does.

Another issue is the plethora of brands to choose from, there are all kinds of brandnames I never heard of offered

It is a daunting task to decide on the right set for you, so a bit of research can't hurt, it's hardly a major purchase these days when electronics are so inexpensive.

Any suggestions appreciated

My simplistic understanding

I love my Samsung's, very large and very light with a very good picture complete with all the bells and whistles. They basically make the same size TV with 4 different qualities. I purchase level 3, a great picture and still reasonably priced. When you go for level 4, the price skyrockets

Hope that helps, I'm not a techie, just an accountant taking an espresso break

PS: get a smart TV, you should learn to love it some day

Even if you get a better Brand, you're still going to find it cheaper at Walmart.

UHD 4k

Make sure it's Smart.

I would pass on Spectre and TCL brands, but Vizio is solid.

Or spend a little more and go Samsung.

Prices are as reasonable as ever.

Pretty interesting about the 4 different quality levels for the same size TV, how do you know which level you're buying ? I have noticed a steep price jump for the same size TV by a factor of like 3, wasn't entirely certain why that variance exists. I'm fine with Samsung brand, a bit leery of mongrel brands and not that eager to buy Walmart electronics, but may do so . I'm not looking for the biggest cheapest one available, that's rarely the best choice, but I am price limited to do it soon, like I want to

What is so great about a smart TV ? This might make the search a bit harder, need the 1080 pixels, prefer a known brand preferably Samsung, upsizing a bit from a 32" desirable, and not more than $200 shipped, I can't even order this until after the first of the month.

Might be tough to meet all of those conditions ?

My dumb TV works fine don’t need a smarter one

guess it depends on your set up or how you watch tv

cut the cord or use a cable box

I'm frankly rather poor , and don't have WiFi or even a computer, my cheap disposable $30 Walmart smartphone is my computer, not ideal but it does get me by, no huge deal if I happened to lose it, it's not like replacing some $800 I- phone. I'm not sure what the super expensive phone does that cheap-( __!__) Walmart one won't do, but that's another subject and future thread
I'll attempt to go Smart tv, but doesn't seem essential for my lifestyle.it's not like I'm concerned about the potential resale value, like with a car, a used TV ain't worth shit, nobody really buys used, so the local 3-baller has little interest in buying it. I would never even think of buying it from a pawnbroker or a grocer .

Is best buy an option? Think shipping is free. I have a sharp hdtv going on 5 years with no problems. This is a little overyour budget but gets good reviews.

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sharp-50-class-led-1080p-smart-hdtv-roku-tv/6177701.p?skuId=6177701

Thanks , of course Best buy is an option, I couldn't care less if the nearest store was 3,000 kilometers from CT, it's a well known company and a name brand item, I most likely will go for this deal if still on the table approximately 2 weeks from now, actually a tad less than that
I just want to make a decision and live with it, it's a TV, not a house or automobile after all, I just want to get one that fits my needs

Thanks to all for your thoughts and ideas
This is now my frontrunner and not likely to change provided it is available. I'm tired of extensive shopping for such a minor item, but I'm also not the guy that buys it at the supermarket

Pete that is absolutely perfect , meets every Condition I specified an increase in size was thinking more like 37-40 " range, but this goes all the way to max size I would consider reasonable for the room

It's a brand I've actually heard of, not a Samsung, but that's fine, I'm more comfortable with a brand that I've heard of. It's also not a Walmart product, I like Walmart and very few people that ever worked there speak positively about them, but I respect their business sense and they treated me well
I most likely happened to work at a store where everyone was cool and there was only one employee I hated. A fatass (like 300+ lbs easily ) Puerto Rican, as in that's where she grew up, the lowest possible level of management, never got along with her from day 1. Not anything racial, and I don't care that's she extremely overweight.Somehow she just took an instant hatred to me, I don't recall any incident with her and treat everyone with respect
This fatass PR bitch named Luz just hates me for no particular reason I can think of, there is always a Luz at any large company

Not too far over budget, I can handle that
I'm sold just hope it's still available around 4/2 or so when I can pay for it .

It has to be a hell of a lot better than the weird brand one from WM, I was considering seriously. I'll still look up the model number for reviews just because I can, but I'd order it right now without doing that if funded.

Anyhow thank you very much for finding this great deal

Doug if you decide to, I think you will be happy with the larger screen. Going from 32 to 50" is a big difference. I know you don't need a smart tv, but it seems most are made that way now. The think the most important thing is to make sure you get the 1080p. If you purchase at best buy and the tv goes on sale cheaper within 30 days, show them your receipt and they will pay you back the difference.
