Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks reportedly agreed to a four-year, $140 million extension Tuesday morning -- a deal that would make him the highest-paid player in the NFL.

Wilson, who's been the Seahawks’ quarterback since 2012, made the announcement on Instagram -- in a video showing him laying alongside his wife, Ciara, and wearing his gold chains -- that a deal between the two sides had been reached.

“Seattle, we got a deal,” Wilson said. Ciara later tweeted she was proud of her husband

The 30-year-old Super Bowl champion’s deal runs through the 2023 season and includes a $65 million signing bonus, a no-trade clause and $107 million in guaranteed money. Wilson will earn $35 million per year, topping Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who makes $33.5 after agreeing to a $134 million extension last year.

“Russell's goal and his hope was that he would continue his career with the Seahawks and continue to bring championships to this town,” Wilson’s agent Mark Rodgers told the AP. “He believes there is still unfinished business and he is looking forward to pursuing that without having to worry about contracts and his future.”

Wilson, who set a midnight deadline for a new deal with the Seahawks, was on a four-year deal signed in 2015 and it was going to expire at the end of next season.

He threw 35 touchdown passes and had seven interceptions last season, leading the Seahawks to an NFC Wildcard game against the Dallas Cowboys where they eventually lost. It was a career-high in touchdown passes for Wilson a year after he led the league in the same category.

Wilson has never missed a game since taking the reins in 2012 and Seattle has had a winning record in each season since.

I have never been a beleiver in this guy but he has been better than I expected although he is unconventional.

With this big contract, lets see what happens.

When he first came in the league everything fell his way

If memory serves, when a Qb receives a big money contract, they don't do well that same season & neither does the team.

waste of money....this is like those old baseball contracts where they pay for past performance.

Seattle has to overpay as he is the face of a fading franchise. Agree that I thought he was over-rated. Their SB can be credited to the defense. Same with the Ravens a few years ago and Trent Dilfer didn't get $140m. Let them live with it and see how many 8-8 years they get out of the highest paid player in the league. The other part of the deal is that there are many past and current teammates of Wilson who dislike the guy...let's see how that affects the locker room.

this just reminds me of the Joe Flacco contract, I said he wasn't worth that money or something along those lines back then

I don't think Wilson is worth this kind of money either

Overrated? He led the league in passing TD’s two seasons ago, and had a solid year last season even though they were a run-first team EVERY game.

He did not win a superbowl the defense did ....When the other team only scores 3 points its hard to loose.

You could argue he lost then a superbowl throwing an INT on the goal line

I have watched a lot of seahawks foot ball since he's been around (still a 49ers fan) and he does seem to make some amazing plays and can take a game over, but this contract is too much - definitely got paid to stay and for his past performance

Of course you get paid for past performance. Isn’t that what big contracts do? Reward players, and lock them up for the future? You guys thinking this is a bad deal...what’s the alternative? Are there good QB’s out there as free agents? The answer is no. Has there even been a good QB drafted lately besides Mahomes? The answer to that is no as well. So when it’s time for a top-10 QB to get paid, the answer is do it

The other team in that winning Super Bowl game scored 8 pts. And he threw 2 TD’s and had a great passer rating
He should’ve won the 2nd, but that’s not on him. Worst play call in Super Bowl history, and Butler made the play of a lifetime. Anyone with half a brain would not put that INT on Wilson
And wtd does “getting paid to stay” even mean? That’s just silly

I think he was fairly serious about playing out the year and playing a year on the tag then leaving if Seattle didn't make him the highest paid QB. Well known and likable player that would likely have a lot more endorsement opportunities if he wasn't in the pacific Northwest.

And Seattle hasn't been on the up and up, even though they did surpass expectations this year.

When you are a "likable" guy the SB interception is "not on him" even though he threw the ball. A non-scrambling Russell Wilson is a typical NFL QB...not top eight, not bottom ten.

Seattle had a perfect built in reason for tanking in 2019 and 2020 where they could build their o line and get eventual qb Trevor Lawrence something to work with so he hits the ground running.

with russel Wilson by himself you will never go 3-13 but you will never go 12-4 either.

he is a low end “ franchise qb”

when he won big he just had to be the game manager.

You serious? Watch the throw again. Butler even said he knew what the play was gonna be because he recognized it from film prep. That’s how he got the jump

It was neither a poor decision, or throw. Terrible play call for sure
