In 1995, Florida State's Bobby Bowden became the first college football head coach
to make $1 million a year. In 2018, there were 21 assistant coaches across college
football making at least $1 million, with more than half (11) coming from the SEC.

John Chavis (DC, Arkansas) didn't quite make $1 million ($995,000) last year but
will join the millionaire club this year ($1.5 million). The veteran coach known as
"chief" built his reputation during a 20 year run at Tennessee (89-08), followed by
another strong stretch at LSU (09-14). His defense at Texas A&M (2015-17) and
Arkansas (2018) haven't been as strong, but you know he hasn't forgotten how to
coach. In 24 seasons as an SEC coordinator he's been part of 12 ten-win teams and
coached 15 first-round NFL draft picks. Some Arkansas fans wonder if Chavis has
lost his touch after all these years after the Razorbacks allowed 34.8 points per game
last year, second worst in the SEC. They will hope that after giving Chavis a $505,000
raise that he rises to the occasion like in the old days.

    Trend of the Day

Seems the Oklahoma schools have a winning tradition that revolves around Texas Tech to
the tune of 32-5 against the spread. Take a look.

Oklahoma State is 19-3 against the spread BEFORE playing Texas Tech. (Sept. 28 vs Kansas
    State this year)

Oklahoma Sooners are 13-2 against the spread AFTER playing Texas Tech. (Oct. 5 at Kansas
    this year)

The two schools have a 86.4% ATS winning edge when related to the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

    Three Freshman to Watch

Meet the next great LSU defensive back. Cornerback DEREK STINGLEY was the No. 1
ranked high school recruit for the 2019 class by Rivals and all he's done since arriving
on campus in Baton Rouge is impress coaches and teammates. He has asserted him-
self as a starter for a defense that annually churns out NFL talent. During his first
spring scrimmage, he intercepted a pass...maybe a sign of things to come.

Some recruiting services had Georgia linebacker NOLAN SMITH the No. 1 recruit ahead
of Stingley and whether the converted defensive end comes off the bench for the Dawgs,
the IMG Academy product and Georgia native has a chance to be one of the country's
most impactful freshman defensive players. Kirby Smart is all smiles when it comes to
    his prize recruit.

By Alabama standards, freshman defensive tackle D.J. DALE cruised under the radar during
the recruiting process, as much as a 315 pound teenager can. He was only rated the nation's
18th best defensive tackle and the 22nd-best player in the Tide's recruiting class. Then all
hell broke loose when he showed up for spring practice. He dominated the line of scrimmage
and figures to be the leading candidate to replace All-American and first round draft choice
Quinnen Williams in the starting lineup.

fewest turnovers (5) in a single season. LSU fans who expect to see a revised offense blossom

CL,like i said in a thread somewhere on here, teams giving a lot of points tend to come out flat or just not be interested in playing a team who is not the very best. Some teams are so outmatched that they will get blown out,but in the first week good teams seem to work their bugs out and then the next game most likely show a lot more intensity.....just the way i see it from in the past
Whether it's the best of times or the worst of times, it's the only time we've got.

South Carolina will face North Carolina and veteran coach Mack Brown in
Charlotte opening week. Brown is returning after a five year absence of
roaming the sidelines for the Texas Longhorns. One interesting trend on
the old coach is he's 23-3 straight up in season openers in his career, in-
cluding 14-0 the last fourteen. South Carolina is favored by 7.5 points.

Alabama lands nine players on Athlon Sports' preseason All-American team.
The Tide had four first team selections, four second teamers and one fourth
    team choice.

First Team: QB Tua Tagovailoa, WR Jerry Jeudy, OL Jedrick Wills , LB Dylan Moses

Second Team: RB Najee Harris, DL Raekwon Davis, DB Xavier McKinney, ST Jalen Waddle

    Fourth Team: OL Alex Leatherwood

Alabama's nine players were the most selected from any team with Clemson coming in
second at eight. The SEC lead the way with 26 overall selections followed by the Big Ten
    with 21.

JIMBO FISHER is the most recent active coach not named Swinney or Saban
to win a national championship, and he's following the model that led to success
at Florida State with Texas A&M. Fisher will get another shot at Clemson and
Alabama this season, too. He will visit Clemson on September 7th and play host
to Alabama on October 12th. Did I mention he will also face Georgia and LSU
then there's Auburn, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and South Carolina.
I've got to think ole Jimbo is missing the ACC schedules.

The last time Mack was hired to coach the Tar Heels, his very first game was against . . . the Gamecocks. In 1988, USC was a 13.5-point home favorite in Mack's debut at UNC. The Chickens won and covered 31-10.

Georgia wide receiver Jeremiah Holloman has been kicked off the football team
after aggravated assault and battery on a women. Holloman was the team's leading
returning receiver. The Bulldogs top-five pass catchers from last year are now gone
leaving senior Tyler Simmons (9 catches) as the top returning receiver. Huge hit
    for the Dawgs.

FLORIDA - Dan Mullen did not disappoint in his first season in Gainesville. He won ten
games, including a blowout Peach Bowl victory over Michigan. Now, the next step is
challenging Georgia in the SEC East. Whether or not that happens as soon as 2019 will
depend greatly on the continued development of quarterback Feleipe Franks, who broke
out with 24 touchdown passes as a sophomore. Running back Lamical Perine is a solid
primary ball carrier, while the Gators possess a number of talented pass catchers. Todd
Graham's defense was a strength in 2018, and it should continue to be this fall, led by
a deep secondary. Opening the season against Miami should be fun, while that two week
stretch in early October against Auburn and LSU will be very telling. The Gators might be
a year away, but the potential is there for a big 2019.

Mississippi State football coach Joe Moorhead has received a contract extension through
the 2022 season that will pay an average base salary of $3.2 million. Moorhead orginally
signed a four-year deal worth an average of $2.75 million when he was hired following
the 2017 season. The new deal is also for four years, which is the longest allowed by state
law. Moorhead will earn a base salary of $3.05 million next season and the number will
    increase by $100,000 in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Mississippi State went 8-5 during Moorhead's
first season. For 2019, ESPN ranks the Bulldogs No. 25 in there pre-season Power ratings.

TEXAS A&M finished 2018 on a four-game win streak and enter 2019 with hopes for a
New Year's Day bowl game. Quarterback Kellen Mond showed star potential last year,
producing 31 total touchdowns. He loses his most trust worth weapon in tight end Jace
Sternberger, but wide receivers Quartney Davie, Jhamon Ausbon and Camron Buckley
are back. Defensive coordinator Mike Elko is one of the best in the business but he still
has to replace seven starters. The secondary was poor last year, but the potential is
there for a major improvement, given the returning personnel and strong incoming class.
As mentioned several time in this thread, the Aggies face a very challenging schedule.

South Carolina and coach Will Muschamp have lost ten straight games against nationally
ranked teams dating back to his first season in 2016 with the school. Facing what most
consider the nation's toughest schedule this fall with as many as six games against Top 25
competition, its not far fetched to think South Carolina wins at least one of those contest.
Muschamp claims this will be the best team he has had at South Carolina. The win may not
come against Alabama, Georgia or Clemson, but Florida and Texas A&M are winnable games
being led by a veteran starter at quarterback and a few elite players on defense. It will be
interesting to follow the Gamecocks this season. Man they need some upsets!

Many believe OLE MISS quarterback Matt Corral can be a top tier player in the tough
SEC, but becoming one as a redshirt freshman with the two best receivers gone seems
a bit of a stretch. He can rely on running back Scottie Phillips a bit, but defenses will
key on him as the offense revolves. The season opener at Memphis and home game
with Cal are tricky, and residing in the SEC West is no walk in the park. Winning five
or six games seems reachable especially considering Arkansas and Vanderbilt are on
the schedule. Memphis, SE Louisiana, Cal and New Mexico State make up the non-
    conference slate.

*Ole Miss is 29-2 straight up as a favorite in lined games against nonconference teams.
On the flipside, they are just 5-7 against the spread.

    SEC East Quick Hits

*Vanderbilt will be a team on the down hill slide this season and won't go to a bowl
    game.

*Kentucky won't be sneaking up on anyone this season as they did last year with
opponents knowing what to expect from the players returning.

*Tennessee will be an improving team and they will make a bowl game this season.

*South Carolina has to play Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Florida and Texas A&M and
won't be picked to win any of those games.

*Missouri's final record this season may not be better than last year's 8-5 mark but
they will be a better team than the 2018 edition. Maybe better than most expect.

*Florida, with a break or two, wouldn't surprise too much to see the Gators topple
Georgia for the top spot in the East.

*Georgia's only question of improving is how well the new offensive coordinator blends
with star quarterback Jake Fromn. The pieces are there if the coaches can just put
    them all together correctly.

Am I reading that right? FIVE teams get an open date before playing Georgia? Tech also gets an extra couple days before playing the Dawgs, as their prior game is on a Thursday.

Auburn - We all know this is a critical season for head coach Gus Malzahn. Would
finishing fourth in the division be good enough for him to keep his job? An incredibly
tough schedule won't make things easy on Malzahn and the Tigers, despite a roster
full of talent, especially on the defensive line. Quarterback play will be the wild card
this season for Auburn with a redshirt freshman or true freshman taking over the
starting job. Both are talented so it just depends on which one raises to the occasion.
The Tigers must improve on offense (11th in SEC) and defense (8th in SEC) to have
any chance of contending for the West. Despite a brutal schedule, Auburn has good
odds to be a top-25 team.

*Auburn's new starting quarterback will be the 9th new QB to start the season in the
    last eleven years.
