A kicker?!?!?!
This is the second time in the past four drafts the Bucs have spent a selection on a kicker. If you're wondering what happened to the last one and why they're selecting another kicker so soon, it's because the previous pick didn't work out. Roberto Aguayo went 22-of-31 for Tampa Bay before being released. He hasn't kicked in the NFL since.
So why would this franchise, which is in need of help in many other areas, take anotherkicker? In the fifth round, no less.
"Kicker's a very important position," Bucs GM Jason Licht explained after the draft. "It's one of the most important positions on the team. Right now, we have a coach that really believes in kickers and the importance of it, (he) stresses it."

A really good, dependable kicker in the NFL is worth every penny he's paid.

When you send your kicker out to keep you in a game or Win a game, you don't
want to have to 'hope' every time he kicks.

This is true. It is also true that almost no teams take a kicker early. 2 were taken in the entire draft this year. I am a Tampa fan and when they took a kicker in the 2nd round I almost snapped. Truly one of the dumbest things I've seen done. Taking one in the 5th is still stupid imo but at least somewhat respectable, I'd prefer like the 7th round personally, or sign a guy that wasn't drafted. In fact since the year 2000 kickers that were drafted have made 81.4% of their kicks. Kickers that weren't drafted have made 82.7% of their kicks. A good kicker is important and its also true that the best one of all time (Adam Vinatieri) was not drafted. The most accurate of all time (Justin Tucker) was not drafted. Having a great kicker is for sure a bonus but drafting one doesn't mean jack dick when most of the best of all time weren't drafted at all.

13 of the top 15 most accurate kickers in NFL history were undrafted. Drafting a kicker is dumb. BTW, Tampa signed a kicker in February and also has last years kicker (Cario Santos) still on the team. And that guys has made 83.2% of his kicks in his career which puts him 28th all time. So we currently have 3 kickers on the team. I guess we are going to just cut Santos to make room for a college kid thats never kicked a single ball in the NFL.

If Justin Cruise were around, he would tell you about kickers fantasy values and where their draft value really is

Hopefully this is the end for Jason Licht.

Just a pathetic judge of talent.

Agree. Just look at the drafts he has been involved in with the team. He has hit on very very few guys and the only one that has turned into a good player is Mike Evans. Seriously, you can argue on how good Wintson, Hargraves, or OJ Howard are but literally the only pick he has made in 5 drafts that turned into a really good pro was Mike Evans. And Tampa has picked 12 or higher in 4 of those 5 drafts. Last year they should've drafted Derwin James, who ended up being a pro bowler, 1st team nfl as a rookie with the chargers. Instead they took Vita Vea who is terrible. We have no CB's or Safties worth two shits and have now drafted 7 cb's or safety's in the top 3 rounds over the last 4 drafts. It's ridiculous.

This. The variance between drafted kickers and undrafted kickers is about the same.
