    Tuesday’s 6-pack
    — Blue Jays 19, Rangers 4— Toronto is 10-5 since Bo Bichette was called up.
    — Nationals 7, Reds 6— Aristides Aquino has 15 hits, 8 HR’s in his first 35 at-bats.
    — Rays 10, Padres 4— Tampa Bay won eight in a row vs San Diego.
    — Indians 5, Red Sox 4— Cleveland is in 1st place by itself for first time since April 20.
    — JD Martinez has his batting practice videotaped every day, so he can analyze it.
    — Chiefs’ rookie QB Kyle Shurmur was 6-15 for 77 yards and a TD in KC’s 38-17 win Saturday; he is the son of Giants’ coach Pat Shurmur.

Today would’ve been my parents’ 64th wedding anniversary; congrats to them up in heaven.

    Quote of the Day
“While I disagree with the arbitrator’s decision, I’m working on getting back to full health and looking forward to rejoining my teammates on the field. I’m excited about this season appreciate all the concerns about my feet.”
    Antonio Brown

    Tuesday’s quiz
Which NFL head coach played college football at Princeton and was later Nick Saban’s QB coach with the Miami Dolphins?

    Monday’s quiz
When Jon Gruden won the Super Bowl coaching Tampa Bay, Bill Callahan was coaching the Raiders.

    Sunday’s quiz
When Jon Gruden won the Super Bowl coaching Tampa Bay, the Buccaneers beat Oakland, Gruden’s old team (and current team).

    ***********************************************************************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

    13) Miami Hurricanes will start redshirt freshman Jarren Williams at QB when they open their season against Florida next week, which means that Ohio State transfer Tate Martell may have transferred to the wrong school- he was expected to start.

Martell is from Las Vegas; if he transferred home now, he could sit out next year, then play for UNLV in 2021 and 2022.

    12) Bryce Harper jumped from Washington to the Phillies this season, but as of August 12, here are the standings in the NL East:

    Braves 70-50
    Nationals 63-55
    Mets 61-57
    Phillies 60-58
    Marlins 44-73

They also traded for catcher JT Realmuto last winter. If the Phillies don’t make the playoffs, how does manager Gabe Kapler keep his job?

    11) Dak Prescott turned down a $30M a year offer from the Cowboys. Word is he wants $40M a year, which I’m pretty sure ain’t going to happen, at least not this year.

Russell Wilson makes $35M a year, Carson Wentz makes $32M. Wilson has won a Super Bowl and Wentz hasn’t, nor has Prescott. Wonder if Prescott would take $32M a year?

    10) Jets kicker Chandler Catanzaro missed two PAT’s Thursday, then retired Saturday before the Jets could tell him to take a hike. Catanzaro kicked for four teams the last five years; he will be replaced by Taylor Bertolet, who kicked for the Salt Lake Stallions in the ill-fated AAF.

    9) Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 55-105 in the 10 years since Jon Gruden last coached there.

    8) If you thought you had a bad day, thieves recently broke into Alex Rodriguez’ rented SUV and made off with $500,000 worth of electronics and jewelry in San Francisco— ARod was there to broadcast the Phillies-Giants game Sunday night.

    7) Baseball stuff:
    — Reds claimed SS Freddie Galvis off waivers from Toronto.
    — Red Sox put IF Michael Chavis (shoulder) on IL.

    6) The 2020 baseball schedule is out; the A’s open next season on March 26 at home against the Twins. There are going to be some cold fans around the country on March 26. Starting a season that early and finishing it in late September is a little odd.

    5) Mets and Marlins will play a three-game series in San Juan, Puerto Rico on April 28-30.

    4) Gleyber Torres has 26 home runs this year; 13 of them are against the Orioles.

    3) Caddy Steve Williams worked six tournaments for golfer Jason Day, then got told to take a hike; Day finished above 40th in only two of the six tournaments.

    2) Random beverage item: Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte returns to menus on August 27, it’s earliest-ever recorded official launch. Just thought you’d like to know.

    1) We can put a man on the moon, but we can’t find a football helmet that Antonio Brown likes that is less than 10 years old?

    WNBA Betting Recap - 8/6-8/12
    Joe Williams

League Betting Notes (Tuesday, Aug. 6 through Monday, Aug. 12)

-- Favorites went 10-3 straight up (SU)
-- Favorites went 7-5-1 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams went 9-4 SU
    -- Home/road teams went 6-6-1 ATS
    -- The 'over' went 10-3

    Season Totals To Date

-- Favorites are 92-52 straight up (SU)
-- Underdogs 78-62-4 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams are 88-56 SU
-- Road teams are 74-66-4 ATS
    -- The 'under' is 77-65-2

    Team Betting Notes

-- Atlanta (5-19 SU, 10-14 ATS) continues to careen out of control, losing both games in the past week, pushing their losing streak to nine games. They're also just 2-5 ATS across the past seven. The Dream have started to struggle on the defensive end again, allowing 85 or more points in each of the past three contests with the 'over' hitting in each.

-- Chicago (14-10 SU, 16-7-1 ATS) continues to be a friend of bettors at the window, cashing in each of their past six while hitting the 'over' in each of the past five. Chicago ranks No. 2 overall in the WNBA with 81.9 points per game (PPG), while allowing 80.9 PPG, good for 11th in the WNBA in scoring defense.

-- Connecticut (16-8 SU, 10-15 ATS) slipped into second place this week with a pair of road losses and non-covers after a seven-game winning streak. The Sun have been terrible against the number, going just 1-5 ATS across the past six.

-- Dallas (7-17 SU, 12-12 ATS) had a rare 'over' result in their testy game in Phoenix (11-12 SU, 11-11-1 ATS), just their fifth over in 22 games overall this season. The Wings continue to struggle on the offensive end, ranking dead-last in the WNBA with 69.8 PPG. They're also second in the league in scoring defense at 74.8 PPG.

-- Indiana (9-16 SU, 11-13-1 ATS) has pulled into fourth place in the Eastern standings, which is no small feat considering they were one of the worst performers in the WNBA last season. They're currently the ninth seed, three games back of the Mercury for the final playoff seed with nine games remaining in the regular season. The Fever have won three of the past four overall, but they're still a dismal 1-4-1 ATS over the past six, and 2-6-1 ATS across the past nine.

-- Las Vegas (16-9 SU, 10-15 ATS) has been playing without star C A'ja Wilson (ankle), and she will be sidelined until at least late August. Even so, they won a key battle against the Sun on Sunday, 89-81, and they're a respectable 5-2 SU aross the past seven.

-- Also in the West, Los Angeles (15-8 SU, 12-10-1 ATS) remains tied with the Aces for first place, and they have two games in hand, too. The Sparks have rattled off five in a row, and eight of the past nine, while going 4-1 ATS over the past five. The 'over' has hit in three in a row, as the Sparks are averaging 84.7 PPG during the span.

-- Minnesota (12-12 SU, 13-10-1 ATS) was humbled by Washington (17-7 SU, 13-10-1 ATS) for the second time in the past 18 days, falling 101-78 in D.C. on Sunday. They're 13-8-1 against everyone else, and 0-2 ATS against the Mystics.

-- New York (8-15 SU, 9-13 ATS) fell behind Indiana in the race for a playoff spot. They have dropped five in a row, and eight of the past nine, while the Liberty have posted an 0-4 ATS mark in the past four, and 2-7 ATS in the previous nine. The Liberty will look to get well against Minnesota on Tuesday evening.

-- The Mercury are struggling to find tertiary scoring this season, and it's one of the reasons they're barely alive in the playoff rce. They have posted a 1-4 SU mark over the past five outings, although they are a respectable 5-2 ATS across the past seven. The 'over' is also 3-0 in the past three, and 5-1 in the past six, as their defense has gone south recently. Rebounding is also a problem, as the Merc rank dead-last in offensive rebounds (32.1 RPG), while checking in 10th in defensive boards (36.6 RPG).

-- Defending WNBA champion Seattle (14-11 SU, 13-11-1 ATS) has cobbled together a two-game winning streak, and they're 6-3 SU over the past nine while also going 6-3 ATS. They're also a solid 5-3 ATS across the past eight outings away from home.

-- The Mystics have managed a 7-1 SU record across the past eight, and the 'over' has cashed in five consecutive outings. They continue to score the basketball well, hitting 91 or more points in two straight, four of the past five and six of the past eight outings.

Preview: Lynx (12-12) at Liberty (8-15)
    Date: August 13, 2019 7:00 PM EDT

The Minnesota Lynx try to put more ground between themselves and the bottom four of the league Tuesday night when they face the struggling New York Liberty.

The Lynx (12-12) are currently seventh in the WNBA and would need to finish fifth or sixth to host a first-round playoff game. Minnesota has a 3 1 /2-game lead over ninth-place Indiana with 10 games remaining and trails fourth-place Las Vegas by 3 1/2 games for a postseason bye into the second round.

Cheryl Reeve's team was unable to complete a sweep of the top two teams in the league after getting pummeled 101-78 at Washington on Sunday. The Lynx barely resembled the team that thumped Connecticut by 32 points Friday night, allowing the Mystics to shoot 54.8 percent while getting outscored 27-10 at the foul line.

"We've got one of the top defensive teams in the league, but you would not know that by watching this game today," Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve fumed to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "We had zero concept of defending the post. Zero. Three players with 20-plus points - 25, 23 and 20 on our defense."

Odyssey Sims had 20 points and eight assists while rookie Napheesa Collier contributed 11 points, six rebounds and five assists. Minnesota has lost five of seven overall and four of five on the road - with the lone win coming against WNBA-worst Atlanta. In the three road games in that span the Lynx played outside Atlanta, they gave up 87.7 points per game - well above their season average of 75.3 that ranks third in the league.

The playoffs appear to be out of reach for New York (8-15), which is three games behind Phoenix for the eighth and final spot. The Liberty are trying to avoid their first six-game skid since ending last year with 13 straight losses and have dropped eight of nine overall after an 84-69 home defeat to Seattle on Sunday.

Tina Charles had 22 points and eight rebounds to pace the Liberty, who committed nine of their 19 turnovers in a decisive third quarter in which they were outscored 27-12.

"We dug ourselves a hole again in the second half," coach Katie Smith told Elite Sports New York. "We knew they were going to ratchet up their pressure, knew they were going to fly around. We turned over the ball in the second half. ... (It was) "same as Chicago, same as Dallas. We can't turn it over."

Starting forward Amanda Zahui B. is currently in the league's concussion protocol and her status for this game is uncertain. Asia Durr, the No. 2 overall pick who has averaged 9.7 points in 18 games, is questionable after aggravating a groin injury that caused her to miss Sunday's contest.

The teams have split the first two meetings this year, with the home team winning both. The Lynx won the most recent matchup 92-83 on June 22 as Sims, Collier and Sylvia Fowles combined for 58 points on 24-of-38 shooting.

    Aces rally past Dream 94-90
    August 14, 2019
    By The Associated Press

LAS VEGAS (AP) Dearica Hamby had 23 points and 16 rebounds, Liz Cambage added 18 points, 10 rebounds and six assists and the Las Vegas Aces held off the Atlanta Dream 94-90 on Tuesday night.

Kelsey Plum sank a pull-up jumper from the free-throw line with 15.8 seconds left to give Las Vegas a 92-88 lead. Tiffany Hayes was off on a long 3-pointer at the other end and Kayla McBride sealed it at the line.

McBride scored 21 points, with five 3-pointers, for Las Vegas (17-9). Jackie Young chipped in with 17 points and Plum was the lone Aces starter not in double figures with nine.

Atlanta (5-20) has lost 10 straight games, its longest streak since a 4-30 season in 2010.

Jessica Breland scored 18 points and Marie Gulich had her first career double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds for Atlanta. Hayes was just 2 of 12 from the field for 10 points after setting a career high with 34 on Saturday at Indiana.

    LYNX 89, LIBERTY 73

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - Odyssey Sims had 17 points, Stephanie Talbot added 16 points and the Lynx beat the Liberty.

Minnesota led 40-29 before New York closed the half on an 11-2 run with seven straight points from Rebecca Allen. She scored a franchise-best 20 points in the quarter - just two points shy of the WNBA record.

Minnesota jumped ahead in the third quarter, scoring 20 of the first 31 points, and cruised.

Napheesa Collier and Danielle Robinson each had 14 points for Minnesota (13-12). Sylvia Fowles had seven points and eight rebounds in 24 minutes.

Allen finished with a career-high 28 points for New York (8-16), which has lost six straight and nine of 10. Allen was 11 of 15 from the field, including 6 of 7 from 3-point range. The fifth-year player set her previous high of 21 points last Wednesday.

Tanisha Wright had six assists for New York to move into a tie with Temeka Johnson for 10th all-time in the WNBA. Tina Charles was held to seven points on 2-of-9 shooting, and Asia Durr and Amanda Zahui B. did not play because of injury.

    Wednesday’s 6-pack

Odds to win Mountain West football title:

    5-4- Boise State

    4-1- Fresno State

    6-1- San Diego State

    7-1- Air Force

    10-1- Utah State

    25-1- Nevada

    Quote of the Day

“Daniel Jones looks like he’d play Eli Manning in a movie about Peyton Manning.”
    Chris Carlin

    Wednesday’s quiz
Which current NFL head coach was once a QB who led his college team to a 42-40 win after they trailed 31-0 in that game?
Hint: He also won an NFL playoff game after his team trailed by 32 points.

    Tuesday’s quiz
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett played college football at Princeton and was later Nick Saban’s QB coach with the Miami Dolphins.

    Monday’s quiz
When Jon Gruden won the Super Bowl coaching Tampa Bay, Bill Callahan was coaching the Raiders.

    ***************************

    Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

    13) Phillies fired hitting coach John Mallee Tuesday, replacing him for rest of this season with 75-year old Charlie Manuel, who managed the Phillies when they won the 2008 World Series.

Manuel managed the Phillies for nine years, winning NL pennants in 2008-09. He wasn’t at the Phillies’ game Tuesday night.

    12) Must be a ton of $$$ involved in running fantasy football leagues. ESPN had a live fantasy draft on national TV Tuesday night, as they wrapped up a 26-hour fantasy football marathon. Fantasy drafts are usually fun to be a part of, just not so much fun to watch.

Related comment: ESPN has gone down the drain in recent years, just don’t like the way they do things as much anymore, but the 26-hour football thing they did this week was good. Maybe they should try something like that for baseball next spring.

Actually, it is surprising that ESPN doesn’t tout NBA fantasy leagues, seeing how they talk about the NBA 365 days a year now.

    11) The more I think about it, it makes sense that I suck at fantasy football because I can’t grasp the concept that quarterback isn’t the most important position on fantasy teams.

    10) Mariners 11, Tigers 6— How bad do you have to be for Detroit to be -$160 against you? Tigers are now 11-41 in their last 52 games, just an awful team, but Seattle is pretty terrible too.

    9) Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck’s calf strain has turned into a high-ankle issue, which is bad news for Indy- they can’t pinpoint exactly what the problem is.

    8) Oregon Ducks landed 6-11 center N’Faly Dante, who moved up from Class of 2020 to this year’s freshman class, as Oregon restocks a roster ravaged by five early departures last spring.

Dante figures to team with UNLV transfer Shakur Juiston to lead the Ducks back to the NCAAs; this news pushed Oregon back into the preseason top 25.

    7) Baseball stuff:
    — Colorado Rockies DFA’d veteran C Chris Iannetta.

    6) New England Patriots’ recent history in divisional games:
    — Won 28 of last 31 games with the Bills, won last 8 visits to Buffalo.
    — Won 14 of last 16 games with the Jets, six of last eight in NJ.
    — 6-5 in last 11 games vs Dolphins, 1-5 in last six visits to Miami.

    5) Houston Astros are in line to become the first team ever not to issue an intentional walk all season.

    4) Arizona State announced that true freshman Jayden Daniels will be its starting QB on August 29, with true freshman Joey Yellen as his backup; this is thought to be the second time a I-A team has gone into the season with two true freshmen atop their QB depth chart- Texas Tech in 2013 had Baker Mayfield and Davis Webb, both of whom are in the NFL now.

    3) There are people in this world who actually get upset about the ketchup/mustard debates that pop up on social media. I mean, we have some screwed-up things going on in the world today, condiments should be the least of our problems.

I once had a date go in the ashcan (imagine that?) because my female companion got annoyed when I asked for ketchup to put on my food. This happened in Chicago, and apparently putting ketchup on food is mostly frowned upon there. Who knew?

    2) Braves 5, Mets 3— Ronald Acuna led off the first inning by hitting a ball off the wall in deep right-center field, but didn’t hustle out of the box and only got a single. He later scored anyway.

Acuna homered later in the game and threw a runner out at home from left field; he is really, really good, but he is still only 21 and will probably get even better.

    1) Awful Announcing released their ratings for local TV announcers; I’m going to do my own ratings later this month, but in their ratings, Padres-Giants-Mets were top three teams.

Nationals-Pirates-Tigers were three lowest-rated announce teams; I would strongly disagree with the Detroit ranking. Jack Morris is really good when he talks about pitching, and Kirk Gibson is a solid analyst. Matt Shepard asks his analysts good questions and they discuss the answers openly. Very unfair rating.

    Mystics rout Storm 88-59
    August 15, 2019
    By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Aerial Powers led six Washington players in double figures with 16 points and the Mystics beat the Seattle Storm 88-59 on Wednesday night.

The Mystics opened the third quarter on a 17-5 run for a 15-point lead as Seattle went without a field goal for four-plus minutes. The Storm pulled within 59-51 entering the fourth, but Washington scored 18 of the next 20 points.

Elena Delle Donne and Tianna Hawkins each scored 14 points for Washington (18-7), which won its fourth straight to sweep the season series. Kristi Toliver, averaging 13 points and six assists, missed her second straight game with a knee injury.

Natasha Howard led Seattle (14-12) with 24 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. Mercedes Russell added 10 points.

Howard scored Seattle's opening eight points and ended the first quarter with 13 as the Storm led 23-16. Seattle was held to 12 points in the second quarter and trailed 38-35 at the break. Howard had 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals at the half.

    WINGS 84, SPARKS 78

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -Rookie Arike Ogunbowale scored a career-high 35 points, Glory Johnson added a season-high 20 and the short-handed Wings ended the Sparks' five-game winning streak.

With Kayla Thornton and newcomer Kristine Anigwe suspended because of an altercation in Saturday's game at Phoenix, it was the rookie who stepped up for the Wings. She scored the last five Dallas points from the free throw line but also scored the Wings' only three field goals in the last five minutes. She also had six rebounds, one of her best, as the Wings outrebounded Los Angeles 37-27.

Chelsea Gray scored 22 points and Nneka Ogwumike had 21 with nine rebounds for the Sparks. When Ogwumike was knocked to the court setting a screen in the last minute, L.A. coach Derek Fisher stormed on the court to demand a foul and was ejected with 31.3 seconds to play.

The victory gave Dallas (8-17) a 2-1 series win over the Sparks (15-9). In the two previous games, Ogumbowale had a total of 20 points. This was her ninth 20th point game and first 30 point game for a Dallas rookie since 2014. The Wings have won back-to-back games for the first time since mid-June.

    SUN 78, MERCURY 71

PHOENIX (AP) - Jasmine Thomas scored 18 points and the Sun held off the short-handed Mercury after giving up almost all of a 20-point lead.

After the Mercury, playing without the league's leading scorer Brittney Griner, pulled within 69-66 midway through the fourth quarter, Thomas sandwiched a pair of layups around a basket by Jonquel Jones to stop the rally.

Shekinna Stricklin followed up a pair of Courtney Williams baskets with a 3-pointer that pushed the Connecticut lead to 58-38 at the 6:50 mark of the third quarter. Without Griner, who was serving the first game of a three-game suspension because of a fight in a game last Saturday, battled back. The Sun missed 17 of 20 shots beginning late in the third quarter and the Mercury turned a 10-0 run into a 15-1 surge to make it a game.

Jones finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Courtney Williams had 12 points and Bria Holmes and Alyssa Thomas had 11 each for Connecticut.

The Sun (17-8) remain in second place after ending a two-game losing streak while Phoenix (11-13) has lost three straight and five of six while holding down the eighth and final playoff spot.

DeWanna Bonner led the Mercury with 17 points and Yvonne Turner had 15.

    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

    — Ravens 26, Packers 13— Aaron Rodgers sat this game out.

    — Phillies 7, Cubs 5— Bryce Harper hit a walk-off grand slam.

    — Mets 10, Braves 8— Pete Alonso was 5-5, knocked in six runs.

    — Raiders 33, Cardinals 26— At one point, total yardage was 234-12, Oakland.

    — A bettor at a William Hill sports book put $2,500 on the Cardinals Thursday to win the Super Bowl at 125-1 odds.

    — A’s 7, Astros 6— This was the 9,000th win in A’s franchise history; 5th game in MLB history where four players homered twice each.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

    13) In the 50 years of divisional play in baseball, only three times has a team won its division with a road record that was 10+ games under .500. This year’s Cubs are 23-38 on the road; they’re tied for first place in the NL Central.

    12) I’m guessing that these NFL joint practices where teams meet up for a couple days and practice against each other are more helpful than just a normal team practice. Breaks up the monotony of training camp- practicing against new faces increases whatever intensity there is.

    11) Marlins 13, Dodgers 7— If a baseball game was ever played in a library, it would’ve sounded like this; the 5,000 or so fans who were there didn’t make much noise, to the point where the Dodger TV guys were talking about how players/managers were more likely to be ejected on a day like this, because the umpires could hear every word they said.

    10) Interesting discussion on ESPN the other night on how catchers now value pitch-framing more than blocking low pitches or throwing out baserunners trying to steal.

As long as there is no baserunner on third, catchers now often stay on one knee and focus on getting their pitchers called strikes. There has been an increase in wild pitches/passed balls in recent years, and this is the reason why, not because pitchers’ stuff is any nastier.

    9) When you look at stats for AAA pitchers this year, important to keep in mind that they’re using the major league (juiced) baseball this year for the first time.

Last year, Lehigh Valley led the International League wth 145 homers; so far this year, eight of the 14 IL teams have hit more than 145 and the season still has a few weeks left.

    8) Last nine baseball seasons, the first player to get to 30 home runs has been a different player every year. Jose Bautista reached 30 homers first in both 2010-11.

    7) Baseball stuff:
    — Reds scratched 1B Joey Votto (lower back).
    — A’s signed P Matt Harvey to a minor league deal. I’m not sure having Harvey pitch in Las Vegas is an ideal situation, seeing how Harvey has had issues getting to the ballpark on time in his career.

    6) Michigan’s basketball program offered a scholarship to rising Class of ’20 recruit Jace Howard, an unranked forward prospect from Miami. Chances are the Wolverines will get him, seeing how Jace Howard is the son of new Michigan coach Juwan Howard.

    5) JT Realmuto caught only one game as a high school senior; he played shortstop mostly, but a wise scout projected him as a catcher and now Realmuto is a very wealthy catcher.

    4) If you’ve ever seen the reality show “Chrisley Knows Best,” on USA Network, you probably won’t be seeing it anymore. Todd and Julie Chrisley were indicted on tax evasion and fraud charges, and are in custody in Georgia.

The 12-count indictment also alleges the Chrisleys committed bank fraud and wire fraud conspiracy, as well as other illegal stuff.

    3) DeMarcus Cousins hurt his knee Monday while working out in Las Vegas; fears are that he tore his ACL. He signed a one-year, $3.5M contract with the Lakers in July, has earned $83M+ in salary in his career, but he hasn’t had much injury luck the last few years.

    2) Former Oklahoma/Steelers QB Landry Jones became the first quarterback to sign a contract with the XFL, which begins play next February. Jones had recently worked out for the Detroit Lions after one of their backup QB’s got hurt.

The XFL’s first player draft is in October.

    1) Great name for a racehorse: Tequila Sheila (25-1) ran in the 5th race at Gulfstream Thursday. Good name, slow horse; Tequila Sheila didn’t hit the board, or come close.

NEW YORK LIBERTY AT DALLAS WINGS (-5, 152.5)

Dallas stunned WNBA bettors – our staff included – with a 28-point fourth quarter to edge the L.A. Sparks with just eight available players on the roster Wednesday night.

The Wings, who were as big as 7-point home underdogs, trailed 64-58 heading into the final frame before catching fire and knocking down 10 of 17 shots from the field, including four 3-pointers.

Dallas is back in action tonight, still missing suspended forwards Kristine Anigwe and Kayla Thornton and playing without the injured Tayler Hill and Azura Stevens. With those depleted ranks, a short turnaround, and a potential letdown spot after knocking off the West Conference’s best team, Dallas is a tempting fade Friday.

New York stumbled into Texas on a six-game losing skid but has been competitive in the opening 20 minutes of those contests. The Liberty are averaging 41.3 points per first half during this slide, while allowing 45.2 points against in the opening two quarters: a margin of minus-3.9 points.

However, things fall apart for New York in the second half, averaging only 32 points in the final 20 minutes over those six losses and watching foes pour it on with 42.3 average points in that same frame. The Wings are the second-best second-half defense in the WNBA with an average margin of minus-1.2 points in the last two quarters but are getting outworked by a 3.3 points per first half.

PREDICTION: New York first half +2.5

LOS ANGELES SPARKS AT CHICAGO SKY (Pick, 162.5)

These teams met just a few days ago, with Los Angeles squeaking out an 84-81 win at home over Chicago but failing to cover as 6.5-point home chalk. Tonight, the Sparks are coming off a disappointing loss at Dallas Wednesday, which snapped a five-game winning streak for L.A.

The Sky have been off since that August 11 encounter, giving them plenty of time to reflect and review that close loss. Chicago is without center Jantel Lavender for the rest of the season after she broke her foot against Las Vegas on August 9 but starting guard Courtney Vandersloot, who missed the previous matchup with L.A. due to illness, is expected return to the lineup after plenty of rest between games.

The Sky’s offense has been firing on all cylinders this month, averaging 89 points per game in August – more than seven points above its season average. The Sky run the fastest pace in the WNBA and have upped that intensity to a pace of 104.55 over its last four games.

Los Angeles is no stranger to fast-paced games either, owning the fourth-fastest pace in the league. The Sparks have played Over the total in four straight games heading into Friday while the Sky bring a five-game winning run for Over bettors as well.

    PREDICTION: Over 162.5

Sun rally late to stun Storm
    August 16, 2019
    By The Associated Press

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) Shekinna Stricklen scored 24 points and made a pair of free throws with 4.3 seconds left to help the Connecticut Sun rally from a late seven-point deficit and beat the Seattle Storm 79-78 on Friday night.

Connecticut (18-8) was down 76-69 with 1:47 left before closing the game on a 10-2 run capped by Stricklen's two free throws. Alyssa Thomas added 17 points, 11 rebounds and five steals, including one to seal the game after Stricklen's free throws.

Seattle (14-13) had its largest lead at 61-48 late in the third quarter, but Stricklen scored nine points during Connecticut's 10-2 run to close the period.

Natasha Howard scored 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Storm. Jewell Loyd added 15 points, Crystal Langhorne scored 14 and Alysha Clark 11.

Jordin Canada missed the game because of a minor shoulder issue.

    MYSTICS 86, LYNX 79

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Ariel Atkins scored 18 points, Emma Meesseman added 17 points and the Mystics clinched a playoff berth with a win over the Lynx.

The Mystics (19-7), who have the best record in the WNBA by a game over Connecticut, surged into the lead for good during a 13-4 run capped at 74-70 on LaToya Sanders' 19-foot jumper with 3:32 left in the game.

Meesseman's 3-pointer with 51.8 seconds left made it 80-73 and Washington made all six of its free throws from there.

Elena Delle Donne had 14 points and eight rebounds, Aerial Powers had 14 points and Natasha Cloud scored 13 for the Mystics.

Sylvia Fowles had 16 points and eight rebounds to lead the Lynx (13-13). Damiris Dantas and Danielle Robinson added 14 points each. Napheesa Collier scored 13 and Odyssey Sims 10.

    WINGS 83, LIBERTY 77

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Allisha Gray scored 22 points and the Wings took the lead in the final minute to win their third straight, beating the Liberty.

Isabelle Harrison's basket with 40.4 seconds left gave Dallas a 76-75 lead. Arike Ogunbowale, who added 21 points for the Wings (9-17), followed with three consecutive free throws and Gray added a pair to make it 81-75 with 17.4 seconds to go.

Bria Hartley cut the deficit to four with a pair of free throws for the Liberty (8-17), but that was as close as they would get.

Tina Charles led New York with 25 points.

New York, which has lost seven straight, trailed by seven in the middle of the fourth quarter but rallied to take the lead at 73-71 with 1:43 to go.

    SKY 91, SPARKS 81

CHICAGO (AP) - Allie Quigley scored 26 points to help the Sky beat Los Angeles to pull into a tie for fourth place with the Sparks.

Courtney Vandersloot added 17 points and nine assists, Astou Ndour and Diamond DeShields had 11 points each, and Stefanie Dolson scored 10 for the Sky (15-10).

Vandersloot scored six points while Chicago closed the game on an 11-2 run after Candace Parker's basket pulled the Sparks (15-10) within 80-79 with 2:56 left.

The Sky led by as many as 17 in the first half, but the Sparks erased the deficit when Chiney Ogwumike's basket gave Los Angeles a 64-63 lead with 1:25 to go in the third quarter. Chicago retook the lead 21 seconds later and never trailed again.

Chelsea Gray had 25 points for the Sparks.

    MERCURY 77, DREAM 68

DeWanna Bonner had 27 points and 13 rebounds to help the short-handed Mercury snap a three-game skid with a victory over the Dream.

Camille Little's jump shot in the final minute of the third quarter sparked an 18-4 Mercury run that ended at 67-62 with 6:24 left in the game. The Dream closed the deficit to 70-66 before Phoenix pulled away for good with seven straight points.

The Mercury's Brittney Griner served the second of her three-game suspension. Diana Taurasi (hamstring), Essence Carson (calf), Sancho Lyttle (knee) and Alanna Smith (ankle) were out with injuries for Phoenix (12-13).

The Dream (5-21) led most of the way and took control late in the third quarter with an 11-2 run capped at 58-49 on Brittney Sykes' pair of free throws.

Renee Montgomery had 17 points to lead Atlanta, which lost its 11th in a row - the franchise's worst stretch since starting 0-17 in 2008.

    Saturday’s 6-pack

    — Phillies 8, Padres 4— Bryce Harper has 7 HR’s, 17 RBI in his last nine games.

    — Pirates 3, Cubs 2— Chicago lost 28 of its last 39 road games.

    — Cardinals 13, Reds 4— St Louis won six of its last seven games.

    — Rockies 3, Marlins 0— Miami lost 16 of its last 19 road games.

    — Giants 10, Arizona 9 (11)— Giants won six of their last eight games.

    — A’s 3, Astros 2 (13)— Grossman got his first-ever walk-off hit in the 13th.

    Quote of the Day
“I’m much better at getting high than getting low.”
Bill Walton, on why he couldn’t be a catcher (I think)

    Saturday’s quiz
Which NFL franchise is the youngest one?

    Friday’s quiz
Jaguars’ QB Nick Foles played his college football at Arizona.

    Thursday’s quiz
Vinny Testaverde is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ all-time leader in passing yards.

    ********************

    Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

    13) Cubs led the Phillies 5-0 after seven innings Thursday night; Yu Darvish was dominant, giving up four hits, throwing only 92 pitches, but they took him out after seven innings. Why?

Darvish has thrown 100+ pitches in four starts this year, but hasn’t gotten an out after the 7th inning all season. Cubs’ bullpen blew this game; Phillies scored six runs in bottom of 9th inning, won 7-5, and there is unrest in Wrigleyville.

One professional gambler called it: “…….Cubs loser. Absolutely my worst beat of the season. Joe Maddon should have to pay off every Cubs bet. Idiot.”

    12) Christian Yelich, Matt Chapman have both hit 15 homers this year that put their team ahead in the game, which is tied for most in the major leagues this season.

    11) I say this every year, but every NFL team should have to dress three QB’s every game, even if the #3 QB is a designated 48th man on the roster— it is for the quality of the product, so people want to watch the games.

Few years ago, Houston lost their starting QB on the first series of the game, so they couldn’t run any long passes the rest of the day- if the #2 QB had gotten hurt, they would’ve had to use a WR and run the option the rest of the game. Thats not professional-level football.

NFL teams make a bleeping fortune; every team can afford to keep a #3 QB around. Eagles have already had two backup QB’s KO’d in their preseason games the month.

    10) There was a guy on NFL Network talking about fantasy football who says he has a team in 12 different leagues this season. How the hell does he keep track of all of them?

    9) 49ers are only team in NFL with more $$$ per year invested in running backs than receivers.

    8) From Warren Sharp:
    W-L records of top-15 draft pick QB’s since 2012:
    • As rookies: 45-70 (39%)
    • In year two: 97-56 (63%)

    7) Baseball stuff:
    — A’s DFA’d C Dustin Garneau.
    — Royals DFA’d OF Billy Hamilton, who runs fast but can’t hit.
    — Cubs brought 2B Addison Russell up from AAA, demoted OF Albert Almora.
    — San Diego put 2B Ian Kinsler (back) on the IL.

    6) Padres’ rookie SS Fernando Tatis Jr (back) is likely out for the season.

    5) Baltimore Ravens have now won their last 15 exhibition games (13-2 vs spread).

    4) From Joe Sheehan:
The percentage of runs scored in the major leagues on home runs is now a tick over 45%. The previous record is 42.3%, and until 2015 it had never been over 37%.

    3) Saw something on Twitter about Steak ’n Shake and In-n-Out Burger, and immediately I got hungry. We really do need a Steak ’n Shake in suburban Albany, preferably south Colonie.

    2) With 2:49 left in a meaningless exhibition game Thursday, rookie WR Andy Isabella caught a 59-yard TD pass from rookie QB Charles Kanoff. A kid from Princeton throwing a TD pass to a kid from UMass— it was cool to see the QB’s reaction/smile, a good moment.

Isabella is going to make the Cardinals’ roster, Kanoff may or may not (practice squad?), but it was certainly a moment he will never forget.

    1) NFL preseason is a time for overreactions:
    — Last week: Kyler Murray is the second coming of Michael Vick.
    — This week: Murray is too short; why did Arizona hire Kingsbury?

    Saturday's Tip Sheet
    August 16, 2019
    By Kevin Rogers

Note: Quarterback rotation subject to change. Lines courtesy of Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook.

    Browns at Colts (-3, 43) - 4:00 PM EST

    Cleveland
Head Coach: Freddie Kitchens (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS in preseason)
Quarterback Rotation: Baker Mayfield, Drew Stanton, Garrett Gilbert, David Blough (Rookie)
Beat Writer Twitter Follow: Mary Kay Cabot

The Browns dominated the Redskins, 30-10 in their preseason opener to easily cash as 1 -point favorites. Baker Mayfield connected on an early touchdown strike to Rashard Higgins, while Cleveland scored a pair of touchdowns on an interception return and a punt return. Cleveland's defense intercepted Washington three times as the Browns improved to 8-1 ATS in the last nine preseason contests since 2017. The Browns have won four consecutive road preseason games, while Cleveland has hit the UNDER in its last four Week 2 exhibition affairs.

    Indianapolis
Head Coach: Frank Reich (3-2 SU, 3-1-1 ATS in preseason)
Quarterback Rotation: Jacoby Brissett, Phillip Walker, Chad Kelly
Beat Writer Twitter Follow: Stephen Holder

The Colts fell behind the Bills, 14-0 early and couldn't get over the hump in a 24-16 setback at Buffalo as 1 -point favorites. Andrew Luck remains sidelined for the Colts with an ankle injury that could keep him out of the regular season opener. Former Ole Miss standout Chad Kelly threw for 121 yards and rushed for a score in the loss for Indianapolis, as the Colts had their four-game ATS hot streak snapped. Indianapolis has dropped five straight exhibition games in Week 2, which includes three losses by one point apiece.

    Patriots (-1, 41 ) at Titans - 7:00 PM EST

    New England
Head Coach: Bill Belichick (43-44 SU, 48-43-7 ATS in preseason)
Quarterback Rotation: Tom Brady, Brian Hoyer, Jarrett Stidham (Rookie)
Beat Writer Twitter Follow: Jim McBride

The Patriots didn't mess around in their preseason opener at Detroit by blowing out the Lions, 31-3 as 2 -point underdogs. Tom Brady sat out for the Patriots, but the combination of Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns, as New England jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead. New England owns a 4-1 SU/ATS record in its last five preseason games, while the Patriots face the Titans in exhibition play for the first time since losing to Tennessee, 27-24 in 2007.

    Tennessee
Head Coach: Mike Vrabel (1-4 SU, 1-4 ATS in preseason)
Quarterback Rotation: Marcus Mariota, Ryan Tannehill, Logan Woodside
Beat Writer Twitter Follow: Jim Wyatt

Following an 0-4 preseason run in Mike Vrabel's first season as head coach, the Titans broke through in this season's exhibition opener by routing the Eagles, 27-10 as 1 -point road underdogs. Starting quarterback Marcus Mariota threw for 24 yards in his limited action, while offseason acquistion Ryan Tannehill was sharp by tossing two touchdowns and racking up 130 yards through the air. Former Toledo standout Logan Woodside also posted a pair of touchdown passes, as the Titans didn't allow a point after halftime. Tennessee didn't score more than 17 points in any of its four preseason games in 2018, while the Titans own a 2-7 ATS record in their last nine exhibition contests.

    Chiefs (-2 , 46 ) at Steelers - 7:30 PM EST

    Kansas City
Head Coach: Andy Reid (39-42 SU, 37-40-4 ATS in preseason)
Quarterback Rotation: Patrick Mahomes, Chad Henne, Chase Litton, Kyle Shurmur
Beat Writer Twitter Follow: Brooke Pryor

After allowing an early touchdown last week, the Chiefs ran off 24 straight points on their way to a 38-17 home blowout of the Bengals. Kansas City easily cashed as 3 -point favorites, as last season's MVP Patrick Mahomes was sharp in his limited time by completing all four passes for 66 yards. Former Marshall signal-caller Chase Litton threw two touchdown passes, while three different Chiefs hauled in touchdown grabs. Kansas City seeks consecutive preseason victories for the first time since 2016, while the Chiefs have won each of their last two Week 2 exhibition contests, each by double-digits.

    Pittsburgh
Head Coach: Mike Tomlin (29-22 SU, 23-26-2 ATS in preseason)
Quarterback Rotation: Mason Rudolph, Joshua Dobbs, Devlin Hodges
Beat Writer Twitter Follow: Gerry Dulac

The Steelers held off the Buccaneers, 30-28 at Heinz Field as Pittsburgh built a comfortable 30-16 lead before Tampa Bay scored two touchdowns in the final four minutes. Mason Rudolph threw a pair of touchdown passes in the win as the former Oklahoma State standout will start once again for the resting Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers have now eclipsed the 30-point mark in four of their last five preseason contests, while Pittsburgh has won four of its last exhibition games at Heinz Field.

    Lions at Texans (-4 , 42) - 8:00 PM EST

    Detroit
Head Coach: Matt Patricia (1-4 SU, 1-4 ATS in preseason)
Quarterback Rotation: Matthew Stafford, Tom Savage, David Fales
Beat Writer Twitter Follow: Dave Birkett

It was an ugly debut for the Lions, who were routed by the Patriots at Ford Field, 31-3 as New England outgained Detroit by 366 yards. Matthew Stafford didn't suit up in the loss to New England, but the veteran Lions' quarterback is expected to see action early on Saturday. Detroit's offense hasn't produced many points under Matt Patricia in the preseason by scoring fewer than 17 points in four of five exhibition affairs. The Lions have never faced the Texans in the preseason, while taking on their first AFC South team in exhibition play for the first time since beating Indianapolis in the 2017 opener, 24-10.

    Houston
Head Coach: Bill O'Brien (12-8 SU, 11-8-1 ATS in preseason)
Quarterback Rotation: Deshaun Watson, AJ McCarron, Joe Webb
Beat Writer Twitter Follow: Aaron Wilson

The Texans fell behind the Packers at Lambeau Field, 28-10 before scoring 16 late points in a 28-26 defeat to Green Bay. Joe Webb played the entire game at quarterback for Houston as the journeyman threw for 286 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. It is unknown if Deshaun Watson will see his first preseason action for the Texans, but it definitely won't be for long. Houston has won six of its last seven preseason games at NRG Stadium since 2015, including a perfect 5-0 mark against NFC foes.

    Cowboys (-2 , 40) vs. Rams - 10:00 PM EST - In Honolulu

    Dallas
Head Coach: Jason Garrett (12-22 SU, 10-21-3 ATS in preseason)
Quarterback Rotation: Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush, Mike White
Beat Writer Twitter Follow: David Helman

The Cowboys and Rams head to Hawaii as the two playoff teams from last season combined for 12 points in their first preseason action last week. Dallas led San Francisco, 9-7 at halftime before the 49ers scored the final 10 points in a 17-9 home victory to cash as 3 -point favorites. Dak Prescott completed all four of his pass attempts, while Ezekiel Elliott remains out due to his contract dispute with the organization. The Cowboys are looking to snap a five-game preseason skid as Dallas last won an exhibition contest in the 2017 finale against Oakland.

    L.A. Rams
Head Coach: Sean McVay (4-5 SU, 4-5 ATS in preseason)
Quarterback Rotation: Blake Bortles, Brandon Allen, John Wolford
Beat Writer Twitter Follow: Gary Klein

The NFC champion Rams are patiently waiting for the regular season to begin as Los Angeles will sit stars Jared Goff and Todd Gurley once again this week. L.A. didn't put much effort into last week's 14-3 setback at Oakland as the Rams mustered less than 200 yards of offense. Former Jaguars' quarterback Blake Bortles will be making his second straight start after throwing for 50 yards in his Rams' debut last week. The Rams have lost four of their last six exhibition games, while scoring 10, 7, 0, and 3 points in their past four preseason contests outside of Los Angeles.
