Do you sometimes rely on passengers to keep an eye out on traffic when turning onto a busy road or when changing lanes? I’ll do it when it’s really congested and my wife or kids will let me know if it’s ok to merge over.
Well, not all that long ago my wife’s mom and stepfather could have lost their lives due to one misunderstood phrase. They were about to turn onto a busy four lane road with two lanes going one direction and two lanes going the other. They were not at a stop light but instead were coming out of a parking lot. The stepdad was riding and was keeping an eye out for traffic coming from the right while the mom was watching the two lane traffic coming from her immediate left.
My mother in law saw an opening to pull out and quickly asked if any traffic was coming and the stepdad belts out, “No one coming!” So she steps on it and almost got into an accident from the oncoming traffic the stepdad was watching for.
What happened?
It was a misunderstanding of what he said. What he said was, “No, one coming!” instead of “No one coming!”
Just wanted to share this this for others to keep in mind when relying on passengers or if you’re the passenger to be careful of the usage of that phrase try and not to say it at all. You can say “ Clear over here”, “Good this way” or something similar instead.
