Alabama’s state Senate passed a controversial bill on Tuesday that would outlaw nearly all abortions in the state and make performing one a felony unless the mother’s health is at risk.

The bill will make the punishment for performing abortions up to 99 years or life in prison, although the woman who received one will not be subject to a felony charge.

The vote is expected to reignite a debate over Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision from 1973 that legalized abortion across the nation, and push Supreme Court justices to re-evaluate the laws.

"The heart of this bill is to confront a decision that was made by the courts in 1973 that said the baby in a womb is not a person," Republican state Rep. Terri Collins said in April.

Although the Alabama State House voted to pass the bill last month, 74-3, Democratic lawmakers pressed Tuesday, unsuccessfully, for amendments that would create exceptions in instances of rape and incest.

"You don't have to raise that child. You don't have to carry that child. You don't have to provide for that child. And yet you want to make that decision," Democratic state Sen. Vivian Davis Figures said.

"You don't have to raise that child. You don't have to carry that child. You don't have to provide for that child. And yet you want to make that decision," Democratic state Sen. Vivian Davis Figures said.

Figures also suggested amendments that would make it a felony for a man to have a vasectomy, and another to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act; both were struck down by lawmakers in a 21-11 vote.

"The issue that that decision was made on ... is that the baby in the womb is a person," state Rep. Terri Collins, who sponsored the bill, said on Tuesday.

Republican Gov. Kay Ivey has not confirmed whether she will sign the measure into law, but during the 2018 midterms, 59 percent of voters expressed their support for a bill banning abortions in the state.

Honestly, abortions for certain segments of the US population is a fantastic idea.

I know 3peet doesn't like abortions b/c he wants those illegals to pop out as many babies in So Cal and Texas as possible.... so he can live in a 3rd world utopia.... but sometimes abortions are good.

I say BAN ELECTIONS and let the people vote more than once a year! Let's try it IE: State/County/Local government... is enough! For starters think of $aving$? Only Government dept. to keep is IRS.... I believe majority of monies are collected by State/County/Local government... before they get filtered to Feds?

Thoughts to make this a reality are appreciated with this in mind...… I know it can't change with a PETITION because before it goes on ballot Congress has to approve and we all know, no-one wants to eliminate their job! Final decision BAN ELECTIONS

I didn't vote for Trump's personal life.

I voted for a guy who hated the poison of politics as much as most of us.

I voted for a guy who wouldn't take any crap and would get things done.

I voted for an imperfect guy who was perfect for the job, and I'll do it again I 2020.

My only votes ever will be for
State/County/Local government
Corruption starts here lets end it here.

Back to topic.. I say put abortion out for the people vote to for/on the next ballot puff_>>

So when brother gets sister pregnant, they can’t abort it and the baby grows up to be a Bama fan.

Oh wait, wrong thread :)

I'm pro-life, but I think this may be too extreme and unenforceable (based on the headlines). You have to govern both sides, although liberals don't tend to think like that as we can see every day in DC.

I believe a baby has constitutional rights, but an argument can be made as to when that baby is a person protected by constitutional rights. I think it's hard to argue that a baby that can survive outside the womb is NOT a person.

So my official abortion position.
1) unrestricted abortions in the first trimester
2) abortions allowed in the 2nd trimester, after counseling (at least one session of some sort)
3) abortions banned in the 3rd trimester, when the baby can survive outside the womb

I'll also take this Bama law over the laws recently passed in NC, which enable infanticide. Letting a baby living outside the womb just die from lack of attention

How can the state of Alabama do this with federal court decisions on the topic having already been decided?

I know there was a law (not sure if it was state or federal that abortions couldnt be performed after 18 -21 weeks, i cannot remember the exact number).

I do like you idea about counseling session or 2 as well. Maybe if the counselor is seeing that "trash" is about to deliver a baby, maybe they would think 2x about letting this baby be born (if unwanted)

Politics has the whole system complicated and why
imperfect guy was perfect for the job. Reading what your saying Enfuego is that a Federal decision isn't the final decision because States can change decide themselves? State/County/Local government... is enough.

Future odds same as Maximum Security declared Derby winner puff_>>

Not a federal issue... Allow states to decide for themselves. If aborting a human is so important to an Alabamian they can move. States rights alive and well

Somehow it works for Sanctuary Cities who go against Federal Law.... Seems some people would protect those illegally in the country, and could care less about babies
