I'd like to keep it purchases in the short-term, not long-term investment type stuff, that could be a whole different thread !

It can be something a bit shady, but not something likely to get you arrested

I'll kick it off...

Barter about the price, just simply ask for a discount. It won't work with the electric or water companies, but will work with cable/ internet providers, the guy you hire to mow your lawn etc. When dealing with a lawnmower sort, make if clear you'll pay cash... That works well for me and my new Mexican lawnmower, Fernando

After all not reporting all your income is as American as apple pie and the fourth of July !... I'm sure everbody here pays all their taxes ???

Buy clearance stuff at places like Walmart, especially right after Xmas, they quickly make stuff 90 % off , just to get rid of it, need the seasonal space back for the next holiday ( Valentine's Day ),that product is clogging up the backroom ! Now you can buy wrapping paper for 30 cents a roll, a $150 artificial Christmas tree for $15, any gimmicky gift stuff for 10 cents on the dollar that you can always use as a gift when needed

A few things...

1) Cash is king....If someone does a service for you (and u keep a lot of cash on hand), offer cash to save money
2) Scratch and dent places. If you buy a refrigerator and it has a dent that nobody sees, then who cares? Save some $$
3) 0% interest credit cards. Just make sure you can pay off balance (or transfer to another card) when payment it due
4) smart phones- sounds weird but i have a bunch of apps that send me coupons or "frequent visitor cards". I have apps where my 10th visit to a restaurant is free or a dunkin donuts app where i accumulate enough pts for a free coffee. Points add up and if you are going to buy it anyway, may as well get some "stuff" for it. Also cardholders get additional coupons.
5) (i dont do this) Cut the cord on cable and only subscribe to certain things. I know people who do this and save some good $$$ but i'm not "bright" enough to do this and dont want to teach myself or my kids how to do this

I have some physical disabilities in my old age, but could do it if I had to, I prefer to have Fernando do it, no contract, no schedule, just call/ text him when I want it done, about every 2 weeks, plus or minus, he only lives .1 miles away ! Works for me.

Like I said first , cash is great and Mexicans lov e cash, I'm sure this guy is here legally, he's a contractor, not so sure about licensed contractor, no license number on his business card, he bills himself and partner/ brother as carpenter/ painters, but claims to do about anything, they do tree removal work, own a bucket truck, have a shop of some sort in the next town over, I suspect their business is operating defiant to law, I couldn't care less.

You can't really fuck up mowing a lawn !

I've noticed a huge increase in the professional beggars standing on street corners in my local city in Virginia. I notice they even take off the weekends, so must be doing okay. What a world.

Buy concentrated cleaning products and a 5-10 decent quality spray bottles ( not worth re-using the original Windex type bottles.

You can get a gallon of glass cleaner concentrate for $15, claims to make 100 gallons of product, I triple it up , so I get about 30 gallons out of it, I don't measure just eyeball it, I'm about out now after 10 orso years on one bottle of the stuff, n ext bottle might last me the rest of my life ?

General cleaning stuff, I like this stuff from dollar tree called LA's Awesome or something like that, a buck for half a gallon of it that makes many gallons of the stuff !

When cleaning windows , go old school and use old newspapers to wipe the glass clean, works as well as paper towels, or even better

I agree, I always use newspapers to wash windows at home and in my truck. No streaks!

Haven't heard Cliff Claven's name in awhile!

I stopped gambling that saved me some money. About the only thing I do is use credit cards to pay for everything, then I save money on vacation by using those points. When I was in college and broke did a lot of things, now I weigh the hassle factor of most and it's not worth it.

1. Use my credit card for all purchases and pay the balance within the month.
2. Wait for bogos for certain items like Clorox wipes and dish soap then stock up.
3. Eat at home.
4. Drink mostly Brita water.
5. Max out all pretax contributions

I had a credit card stolen the other day but I didn't bother to report
it because the thief spends less than my wife.

All lighting in my house is now LED. The bulbs of course cost a little bit more but worth the investment.
