Chris Long reveals longtime marijuana use, how he beat NFL tests

Chris Long experienced the NFL zenith, winning Super Bowl LI with the Patriots and Super Bowl LII with the Eagles.

Those weren’t his only highs.

The recently retired defensive end told “The Dan Patrick Show” on Tuesday that he used his “fair share” of marijuana during his 11-season NFL career.

“I’m not a dry snitch, I’m not going to put a percentage on how much the league smokes, but I certainly enjoyed my fair share on a regular basis throughout my career,” said the 34-year-old, who played his final season with Philadelphia. “If not for that, I’m not as capable of coping with the stresses of the day-to-day NFL life.”

The NFL still tests for marijuana and catches and suspends players every year. Long shrugged, though, saying the testing was simple to beat: It happens once a year at a date that is known, so he and others would stop using leading up to the test.

It was easy to navigate. It was hard to get by without the marijuana.

“In that month or two that you stop, you’re going to reach for the sleeping pills, you’re going to reach for the pain-killers and you’re going to reach for the bottle a little bit more,” Long said. “If you’re serious about players not using, you’d be testing more often. I hope they go the opposite direction and just kind of realize how arbitrary that one test is.”

Long was never caught nor suspended. He retires after 162 games played and 70 career sacks.

Just legalize weed for any NFL player to be allowed to smoke it, at least for medically purposes instead of the option of pain meds.

The test is in June. And they only test a “random selection” of players for each team. I know a few nfl players and have talked to them about it. They say you are a dumbass if you get caught because everyone knows when the testing is. And you don’t even hear publicly about the first two failed tests.

When you hear in the news someone failed a drug test and will be suspended... it is because it is their 3rd, 4th, 5th time failing for weed. And that’s when they put you in the program. Not after just one. So those you hear who get caught...literally can not quit.

Tyreke evans just got busted in the nba and suspended. I assume it’s weed.

Yea, was thinking Josh Gordon, but for some reason I think his problem is alcohol related. But, it could be weed. Not sure.

Anybody else? There sure aren't many.

Not sure why the NFL makes crimes out of actions that are not crimes to the general public, but they do. Roger's NFL

I don't think pot is a PED, so I think the league should back off. If a player has legal problems connected with it's use, that's a different story

Alcohol destroys cell tissue. Cannabis heals the body. Very easy to understand why one is federally illegal still

the nfl seems to be as backed off of trying to penalize people for it as they can be while still acknowledging that its illegal in some states and have to test for it.
i was reading how they do the test.
test you once between april and august and as long as your clean they dont test again. it should be legal but it also should be easy to pass the test so anyone caught is really stupid. if your using it for pain you could literally use it all week long during the season and never get caught, quit during the offseason and be done with it. im sure the pain is there year round for some of these guys but overall this is the easiest drug test to pass....or should be.

So they test for weed but you abuse oxycontin and benzos all you want?

Most drugs should be over the counter. Take the power away from fake doctors who don't even know you but in that 3 minute conversation they think they know what you should take
