Oregon authorities are seeking a would-be thief who was armed with a hatchet when he tried to rob a convenience store, only to flee when the clerk drew a gun and called 911.

However, the clerk's quick thinking cost him his job, with the president of Plaid Pantry in Oak Grove explaining to local station KOIN-TV that the chain has a zero-tolerance policy for weapons.

He said employees are trained to de-escalate robbery situations to avoid injury, according to the station.

The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office on Friday released surveillance video of the incident which took place April 28 at the store, seeking tips in identifying the suspect who fled empty-handed and without the 12-inch hatchet.

“We’d like to reunite you with the hatchet you left behind after the clerk responded with a handgun and a 911 call and you fled the scene,” Sgt. Marcus Mendoza said in a news release.

Mendoza said the suspect placed the hatchet on the counter and reportedly telling the clerk, “I’m sorry. I’ll leave."

"The suspect got on his knees with his hands in the air, then abruptly fled the store," he said.

What a joke this is......the guy defended hinself & the store, & gets fired. He quickly de-escalated the situation. He should sue the store he worked for.

So what theyre saying is, its Ok for somebody to come in & rob you with a machete or gun, but you can't defend yourself......

It's all about not getting sued. They don't want a clerk to shoot someone and have it be deemed excessive force, better to have a clerk killed on the job than to have a clerk kill someone and be sued. Same goes for most public school systems where the inmates run the asylum and teachers can't discipline out of control students for fear of getting fired, being called racist, or being sued. Such sad times we live in.

The chain would rather that the clerk had the hatchet immbedded in his skull and then comment that the siruation had been deescalated. What a phucking joke this world has turned into.

Unfortunately this is what lawyers/lawsuits and corporate greed have led to. These types of stores typically can’t get insurance without a no carry policy or the insurance is so astronomically expensive they raise prices and put themselves out of business. Same thing is happening to the notion of have teachers and/or school personnel armed. In areas that passed laws allowing this it simply hasn’t happened because the school will lose its insurance.

There will come a time where Americans will carry gins everywhere they go because it will be too dangerous.....maybe within 20 years thru out america.

It's just corporate policy, you can't really have your clerks being armed, lots of potential liabilities if said clerk kills a robber , company could become bankrupted because of it.

I worked in a corporate convenience store for 6 months or so. It's not worth robbing the place. You've got a till with $100-200 in it, access to a safe compartment with maybe $200-300 in small bills and rolled change, the other portions of the safe are not accessible by an ordinary clerk, you drop money in the safe in $100 increments, $40 on graveyard, so you might get $400 robbing the store, $100 of it in rolled coin, that's in a good hood !

You're also going to be on dozens of cameras. Clerks are taught to just give up the money, corporate can't tolerate some vigilante cashier, there are procedures to follow, it ain't your fucking money anyway !

Totally different if it's some family owned store run by say some family of dot Indians, expect a gunfight !

The real money is the $10,000 +++,worth of cigarettes behind the counter. Cigs are about $100 a carton, 100 cartons=10k retail, maybe 3k fenced real quick ?, Tie the unarmed clerk up at 3 am and take the cigs, if anything !

Forget the lottery scratch off tickets, they will be reported as stolen and therefore worthless and deactivated.

You just can't have rogue employees carrying firearms even if they have proper permits

who's to say that...if he gave him everything...the guy wouldn't have tried to still kill him???

Not likely why escalate a simple robbery that might get you a few years into murder 2 and maybe a life sentence ?

I know you are very unpopular Marge, but you make sense here, one has to follow these rules.

I would do whatever I thought gave me the best chance of survival, I wouldn't be too afraid of a hatchet, knife, etc. A gun would be different, I'd try and disarm the perp if I saw a chance to do so, fuck corporate policy... it's survival then, I won't carry an unauthorized handgun, never even owned one, only shot one in one target shooting session in Vegas about 30 years ago

The robber just wants the cash, give it up instead of trying to be Steven Seagal, that's your best chance !

Companies that run chains of convenience stores care most about the bottom line, but generally following policy is also safest for the employee in a robbery situation.

Many of these robberies are done by people on drugs who take the hundred dollars and then kill the store clerk anyway.

not really. they know that the cops are going to spend less than 10 minutes investigating this so they rarely kill a cooperating clerk.

There are much better targets to rob than your local Quickee Mart, Circle K, 7-11 type of place, if I were desperate enough to do that, I'd target a home or anything but a place full of cameras that has very limited cash on hand

I can show you so many times that the (black) robbers get everything from a compliant clerk and then shoot the clerk.
