Mobile sports betting could be poised for a 9th-inning win in New York, with Gov. Andrew Cuomo saying Tuesday that state legislators could approve wagering before the session ends next month — despite long saying that it could take years because of legal hurdles.
“It’s possible,” Cuomo told WAMC radio host Alan Chartock. “I think the time is short and the list is long, so I would counsel the legislative leaders to get the priorities done, because these priorities are not easy.”
The legislative session ends in June — but even that small window is more of a glimmer of hope than Cuomo has long given sports betting.
Even as New Yorkers flocked across the Hudson to place their bets in New Jersey — potentially costing the Empire State millions in tax revenue — Cuomo said that legalizing wagering here would require a constitutional amendment, a years-long process.
The sudden about-face left proponents of mobile betting surprised, but optimistic.
“The last conversation I had with … the governor’s office was last week, and we were still not on the same page,” said state Sen. Joe Addabbo (D-Queens), a sponsor of the mobile sports betting bill and chairman of the Senate Gaming and Wagering Committee.
“If the governor wants this — it all happens if he wants it, and that’s fine — I hope it’s true,” said Addabbo. “But there’s 15 days left. If he wants to do something for revenue and everything else, now is crunch time.”
