Former Arkansas state senator reportedly found shot dead inside her home

A former Arkansas state senator reportedly was found shot dead inside her home Tuesday, prompting police to launch a homicide investigation.

The body of Linda Collins-Smith, a Republican, was discovered Tuesday night at her home in Pocahontas, about 130 miles northeast of Little Rock, her former press secretary, Ken Yang, told KATV. Yang said the death is being investigated as a murder and that neighbors reported hearing gunshots a day or two before the body was found.

“I am in shock over the news of Sen. Linda Collins-Smith’s death,” Arkansas Lt. Gov. Tim Griffin tweeted. “I am heartbroken for her family & friends as they grieve, & my thoughts & prayers are with them during this tragic time."

Collins-Smith’s remains, according to KATV, were found wrapped in a blanket.

The 57-year-old former Republican state senator represented the 19th district in Arkansas from 2014 until 2019. She lost her party's primary last year.

She originally was a member of the state’s Democratic Party before switching over to the Republican side in 2011.

“To so many of us, Senator Linda Collins-Smith was more than just a colleague. She was a friend and warm person,” the Democratic Party of Arkansas tweeted.

“She was a passionate voice for her people and a close member of our Republican family,” added the Arkansas GOP.

A bio of Collins-Smith on her website described her as a “tireless advocate for conservative principles and traditional values"

“She believes in limited government, lower taxes, and ending burdensome regulations. She stands for a child’s right to life from conception, for religious freedom, for our Second Amendment rights, for individual liberty, and for greater personal responsibility,” it said.

Collins-Smith also was active on Twitter, last posting May 27.

Woman arrested in connection with death of ex-Arkansas lawmaker Linda Collins



LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Authorities on Friday night said they’ve arrested an Arkansas woman in connection with the killing of a former state senator who was found dead outside her own home.

Arkansas State Police said they and Randolph County sheriff’s deputies arrested 48-year-old Rebecca Lynn O’Donnell in connection with the death of former state Sen. Linda Collins. Police said criminal charges were pending and did not say whether they were seeking any other suspects in Collins’ death.

Collins, 57, who went by Collins-Smith in the Legislature, was found dead June 4 outside her home in Pocahontas, about 130 miles (210 kilometers) northeast of Little Rock.

A State Police spokesman declined to say where O’Donnell was being held. The Randolph County jail referred questions to the sheriff, who did not immediately return a call seeking comment. State Police said it did not know when O’Donnell would appear in court.

Ken Yang, a former communications director for Collins, said O’Donnell had worked on the former lawmaker’s most recent campaign and that the two were friends. Yang said Collins’ family did not have an immediate comment on the arrest but may issue a statement.

Collins served one term in the state House and was originally elected as a Democrat in 2010. But she switched parties and became a Republican in 2011, the year before the GOP won control of both chambers of the Legislature. She was elected to the state Senate in 2014 and was one of the most conservative lawmakers in the majority-GOP chamber. She lost re-election in the Republican primary last year. Collins and her husband, retired Circuit Judge Philip Smith, divorced last year and were in the middle of a legal fight over their properties, including a motel.

Authorities have released few details about Collins’ killing and have not said how or when the former lawmaker was killed. A judge last week granted a request by prosecutors to seal documents and statements obtained by police during the investigation. Collins was active on social media but her last tweet was posted in late May.

Collins’ funeral is scheduled for Saturday morning in Pocahontas. Collins’ two adult children and father said Monday they were saddened and angered by the former lawmaker’s killing.

Why isn't she locked up? Trump was supposed to be tough on crime. Allowing the biggest criminal in the history of the world to be free and continue to do these things, shows how he is the weakest on crime we have ever seen

can imply what he wants done. There's a bakers dozen out there who should be behind bars.

I have conditioned myself to expect nothing to happen. That way if by some miricle justice

The problem is that Hillary Clinton continues to commit crimes and is able to continue on in her attempt to destroy America. By letting her do that, our country is failing. Justice and our laws and locking her up are not about being "pleasantly surprised." It is about what needs to be done to Make America Great Again.
