Former Boston Red Sox slugger and Dominican star David Ortiz was shot and wounded at an entertainment center in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, his father told ESPN's Enrique Rojas.

"They called to tell me that David is injured and that they took him to a medical center, but they did not tell me how he is or exactly where he was transferred," Leo Ortiz said via telephone from the Dominican Republic.

"At the moment, everything is confusing. I'm trying to find out where they took my son," Ortiz's father added.

According to a report from Dominican TV station CDN 37, Ortiz was shot in the leg.

A person who was at the scene told ESPN that Ortiz was wounded by a man, who is being detained, while he was in the "Dial" club in the eastern part of the Dominican capital, and that Ortiz was transferred to the Corazones Unidos clinic, which is located in the center of the city.

The 43-year-old, who was born in Santo Domingo, played in the MLB for 20 seasons but was best known for the 14 years he spent with Boston.

Ortiz made 10 All-Star teams and won three World Series with the Red Sox. He was named World Series MVP in 2013, when he helped the Red Sox knock off the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2.

Updated :

Dionisio Soldevila, a reporter from the Dominican who hosts a radio show with Rojas, told ESPN he spoke with the doctor who first treated Ortiz and was told Ortiz was shot in the lower back and that the bullet went through and came out his stomach. He's currently in surgery, according to Soldevila.

A person who was at the scene told ESPN that Ortiz was wounded by a man, who is being detained, while he was in the "Dial" club in the eastern part of the Dominican capital. Ortiz is being treated at the Dr. Abel González clinic.

Oh yea I bet kidnapping family members for ransom money is HUGE....shit we hardly hear about. These athletes here in the US have so much family in those parts. I bet that goes on A LOT more than we hear

A man was beat up by a bunch of locals at the scene and allegedly he is either the shooter or was with the shooter.

David's father says he is at rest and no major organs were hit by the bullet. He will fully recover.

Someone in the DR on Twitter is very confident this was a hit on him as Ortiz has been speaking up against the corruption in DR. The person even posted photos showing one of the two people arrested was a DR police officer so he feels it was definitely sort of retaliation for recent comments. Would be very interesting if true

Dont think I'll be vacationing in the Dominican Republic any time soon

They advise you to stay on the all inclusive resorts, like many other vacation destinations (although the three Americans dying mysteriously recently sort of changes all that)

And to be honest, when looking at the shootings in Chicago or other mass murders, other counties have advised people to avoid the USA

Sometimes things can be overblown
