Most people hate them ( especially seniors), but places like Walmart force you to use them by having very few live cashiers and therefore long lines, or you can go self-check, or shop elsewhere.

One of the problems with the machines is they just aren't built for large orders, the best way to do a large order is get a second carriage to load your shit into as you empty the first cart.

You will of course get this message especially on large orders...

Unexpected item in bagging area !

I don't miss my days overseeing those machines, I don't see WM removing them but some supermarkets are.

They work best when buying a small number of items.

They are also great for someone buying crap they are embarrassed to buy, stuff like head lice treatments, wart remover, jock itch spray, diarrhea meds, hemorrhoid stuff, sex products, dandruff shampoo, Depends, etc.

You might not want to put that stuff up on the conveyor belt for all to see ?

I'm comfortable using them since I had to learn the damn things, but every store seems to use different machines adding to the confusion.

no idea where you get the idea that self checkout is going away. the major manufacturers have posted B2B2B record years and the fast food industry is moving to an all self-ordering/paying kiosk program which will be followed shortly by a robot flipping the burgers and frying the potatoes

chains used to target 25-30% of shoppers pay through self-checkout and now they target 65-75%... the compounded annual growth of this sector is 8% and expected to reach 4-5B in the next 5 years.

stores are adding them, not removing them

and if you're shopping at Walmart you have more concerns than self-checkout registers

Love them I use them all the time unless I can't. When I do a full grocery run where I have to weigh things or look them up like apples, etc then it's too much work.

But for normal sized trips to the store or only 1 thing? For sure I use self checkout. It is a little slower process when you have to find someone to remove a security tag thing or when it says bag this and you already did.

I like self checkout when i want to get in an out.

I feel like more stores would add them as to checkout lines will move faster and you dont have to hire as many employees. If there is ever a problem with a self checkout machine, you can press something and an employee will come and help you out.

Before you knock Walmart, they have some good prices on many things. If you live in a halfway decent area, the "people of walmart" stigma really doesnt exsit

“Machines don’t pay taxes!” Canadian shoppers are rebelling against the use of self-checkout machines in malls and stores, arguing that they’re worried they’ll lead to job loss.
A study conducted by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has recently shown that there many people who’re against the deployment of self-checkout machines.
According to some people, these machines are likely to increase unemployment in the country by reducing existing jobs.

[h=2]Speaking Up for Retail Storage Cashiers[/h]One Canadian shopper, Dan Morris, gave his opinion on the issue during a CBC interview.
Morris said:
“They’re trying to herd everyone in, get everyone used to the self-checkouts to cut down on staff. Machines don’t pay taxes. They don’t pay into the pension plan.”

Most of the interviewed people supported Morris argument, emphasizing that the self-checkout system was going to plunge a lot of families.
Tom Eburne, who lives in Chilliwack, B.C also refuse to use the machines. He’s determined to keep the cashiers employed.
He Said:
“We will resist as long as we can. I think any job loss is a step backwards.”
Other people argued that the machines will lead to a financial crisis and distress in the country’s economy. Thousands of people would lose jobs if the automated systems were deployed.
Apart from retail stores, other e-commerce entities are slowly adopting automated services in their customer relation ideas.

For instance, Walmart and Amazon, two of the largest online marketplaces, are using robotic technology to put up store chains that don’t require human services.
Walmart has opened a Sam’s Club Now in Texas, which is a cashier-less store. A shopper can only buy items they want using a phone app that scans the items purchased.
Amazon is also expanding its cashier-less concept, Amazon Go. In its physical stores, people can take whatever they need and walk out.
But the stores are installed with a technology that detects when someone picks up an item from a store shelf. Customers will then pay for the goods via their Amazon accounts.
According to a survey by CBC, conducted on 1,053 retail shoppers in Canada, only 11 percent of the respondents admitted using the self-checkout machines regularly. They argued that it was more convenient and faster.
The self-checkout technology has been in existence for almost three decades, and it has been undergoing improvement and upgrades. But many people still opt not to use it.

Sandra Wilkins, a working mom of two, said:
“It can be classified as a crime against humanity to use one of those machines.”
[h=2]The conflicting Emotions[/h]A large number of social media users rebuked those who were against the use of self-checkout machines. Some people even argued that this technology is helpful as you’ll not have to ‘endure’ the attitudes of cashiers anymore.
Others insisted that the technology will assist businesses to cut labor costs.
Sean Mullin, Executive Director of the Brookfield Institute for Innovation + Entrepreneurship at Ryerson University in Toronto, said:
“To kind of cling to an old model just because it involves workers is not something that companies and others are set up to do.”

When Peggy Eburne, Tom Eburne’s wife, was interviewed by CBS, she revealed that she has never used the self-checkout system in her entire life. Peggy insisted that it was inappropriate to automate every job done by humans with machines.
She also acknowledged their resistance may be futile in their campaign to abstain from self-checkout machines to protect cashier jobs, but they aren’t backing down.
She said:
“Maybe the little we do makes no difference at all, but we like to stand by what we believe in.”

Walmart in Canada installing about 40 self checkouts in the smaller stores. After your done scanning, the really annoying shit sqwaks out oif the speaker. A bot voice asks atleast 3 times if you have scanned everything because every last one of u fuckers rips off Wallyworld at the self checkout. Then "HOW MANY BAGS DID U USE TODAY?".... ALWAYS ZERO, next the **** cackles "Do u want to donate to any or all of 30 fucking charities"?? A BIG FAT FUCKING NOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Its a love hate relationship. it takes me longer to go through the many "how much did u steal today? prompts and pay than it does to scan and bag a cart full.

Use self checkouts whenever possible. They're so much quicker.

SAME....I do Walmart like once weekly for generic buys and wife's insulin and very rarely have to wait for a SC....Average checkout time for $60-100 order is about four minutes
