It merely means to select the best option from what is available.

If you looking to rent an apartment or buy a house, you'd discriminate between your options

Same for buying a car, ordering from a menu, choosing a woman to date and maybe marry, which head of lettuce to buy at Piggly wiggly, wether to go to Food Lion or Piggly Wiggly, for you Southerners

My point is everything we do is discrimination.

Racial discrimination is fast becoming a thing of the past, it may not be all complety equal, but some blame must fall on the black community for their A/A culture of entitlement, getting violent with youth that try to learn, and perpetuating the ghetto gang-
banging mentality

This shit will not exist hundreds of years from now when everybody is multi-racial.

I'm pretty sure I'm just about 100 % white, if you look at say National Geographic, the teal Africans are black as coal.

In America few blacks are that Black, thus some cream in the coffee for sure !

Obama was certainly a Havfrican. Actresses like Halle Berry and Vanessa Williams are so light skinned they likely wouldn't be accepted as black in the ghetto, wether famous or not.

When people learned it can be used to acquire other peoples' money, more so now than ever before :)

We had two qualifies applications for a condo rental, obviously had to turn down one. The realtor was concerned about what to tell the second applicant, he wanted to say "the right thing". I told him to tell the truth, tell her we had two good applications and we decided to take the one with fewer children, 1 instead of 2 since it's only a two bedroom unit.

But that's what it comes down to nowadays, everyone is worried about political correctness and lawsuits

Not me. You say that but then when you hear the unbiased truth, that is wrong too

Normally stay out of this stuff but by definition

discrimination - the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age or sex.

So the word itself suggests “bad”

I was just watching CBS and a lady made a comment about her 7 yr old grandson being scared if they see a cop.

How does that happen? Does that 7 yr old see a cop in real life acting that way or are they told to be afraid of cops?
Do they watch the news that show cops being bad?

Like I said, normally stay out of this section so maybe Doug post this stuff for reactions?

Sadly, racism, discrimination, prejudice, and many other negative social issues are not going away. It is either taught by family members, friends or just watch TV, and God forbid read stuff on Internet.

As to the 100 year thought, look at Europe countries, been around much longer than USA and racial issues maybe worse??

As a society we have to understand each other, why we all act like we do, be able to Agree to Diagree, solve problems where possible...but that is a dream world and will not happen anytime soon.

So best we can do as individuals is not promote ignorance, lack of common sense, or how about just be a decent human being.

Off my soap box, and back to sports section of this forum.:103631605

  • 1. recognize a distinction; differentiate.
]"babies can discriminate between different facial expressions of emotion"
    synonyms:differentiate, distinguish, draw/recognize a distinction, tell the difference, discern a difference;

  • 2. make an unjust or prejudicial distinction in the treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, sex, or age.

    ---------------------------------------------

She has "discriminating" taste. The word in and by itself is harmless, and we all discriminate (read differentiate) every day

However, the word does have negative connotations in today's society. Look at the expression MAGA, 30% or more of this country thinks that means White Supremacist or Nazi, how does one make that judgement? Rhetorical question

It's all about spin and people raised to believe they're victims

Interesting how discrimination has the order flipped compared to discriminate

You want to know what word's definition changed the most significantly?

That would be "Welfare". The Constitution reads

----------------------------------------------

"The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States"

---------------------------------------

Now we know the founding fathers wanted a small federal government, and they believed you should NOT take money from one man to give it to another, and the meaning of "welfare" in the constitutional era was about promoting the common good of the people over the interests of a select few.

Boy, have we bastardized that expression, today it means the exact opposite. Today it's about starting and expanding modern day welfare programs, and enhancing the special interests of a few over the common good for everyone. They have taken that expression to mean an overbearing federal government can micro manage the minutia of all our lives.

Our founding fathers are rolling over in their graves, they're in the state of disbelief, they're wondering how could people possibly have gotten this so wrong

Bless their hearts, they tried so hard

sorry, fella, but you looked up DISCRIMINATION not DISCRIMINATE

that's like looking up RACISM when really looking for the definition of RACE

just like indiscriminate = doing something randomly, discriminate can simply mean noting the differences in something. Discriminating between right and wrong, clean or dirty, tasty or bland has absolutely nothing to do with treating people differently because of their age, race, or gender.

so fucking silly you people don't know meanings of words

Just goes to show how careful you need to be. I should not have focused on the sentence “everything we do is discrimination”.

Doug is correct in his statement.

I made a mistake.

Not really, Timmy. Although the word "discriminate" has more than one meaning and certainly can pertain to many subjects, I'm sure Doug had at least part of your view in mind or he wouldn't have asked "when did discriminate become a bad word?" Because it certainly is not a bad word unless used in the sense that your reponse pointed to.
