Pennsylvania online sports bettors have options now.

Four weeks after SugarHouse Casino in Philadelphia launched the first legal online/mobile sports betting platform in the state, Parx Casino in the Philadelphia suburb of Bensalem started taking online bets at 4:05 p.m. local time on Monday.

Both SugarHouse, which will soon be rebranding as Rivers Philadelphia, and Parx use sportsbook software powered by Kambi. That means both online sportsbooks offer the same betting markets, with the same spreads. The only variation is in some of the pricing, as each book can individualize on that front.

So for bettors hoping to do serious line-shopping, that will have to wait. Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh is expected to start taking bets on Tuesday, but before you presume that means more diversity of betting options, note that Rivers and SugarHouse are both owned by Rush Street Gaming and Rivers is partnered with Kambi as well. So the addition of a third site won’t add much, if any, variety to the mix.

Three days of testing

Parx (web domain: pa.parxcasino.com) is in soft-launch mode for now, meaning it’s open for limited hours, taking deposits and real-money bets, while the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board keeps a close eye to make sure everything is working and the safeguards that prevent underage or out-of-state players from betting are doing their jobs.

The planned soft-launch schedule is as follows:

Monday, June 24: 4 p.m. – 12 a.m.

Tuesday, June 25: 2 p.m. – 12 a.m.

Wednesday, June 26: 12 p.m. – 12 a.m.

If all goes well, the book will be free to launch 24-hour operations on Thursday, June 27.

Rivers is believed to be required to undergo only two days of testing, meaning it can potentially also go live 24/7 starting Thursday.

That pesky Apple situation

The new Parx betting site is available on any laptop or desktop computer, but if you’re looking to play on your phone, there are complications.

Android users are good to go. But Apple’s App Store’s recently announced policy states, “HTML5 games distributed in apps may not provide access to real money gaming, lotteries, or charitable donations, and may not support digital commerce. This functionality is only appropriate for code that’s embedded in the binary and can be reviewed by Apple.”

In short, betting apps need to be reformatted to comply, and it might be another couple of months before any of the PA sportsbooks get App Store approval. (For the existing New Jersey sportsbooks, a deadline of Sept. 3 has been set for them to revamp their apps to avoid being pulled from the App Store.)

So Parx has launched without an Apple app. The text on the betting site just prior to launch read, “It will be available on iOS devices in the near future.” As was the case with SugarHouse, Parx execs came to the conclusion that this imperfect scenario is preferable to not launching at all.

Users can still play on their iPhones and iPads, however, by navigating the betting websites on those devices. It’s an experience that’s not custom built for a phone or tablet the way an app is, but at least it’s a way for customers to get a bet down when they don’t have computer access.

Deposits and promotions

Making a deposit onto a Pennsylvania online gaming site is not as easy as it is in New Jersey.

For now, deposit options at Parx Casino include bank transfer, funding in person via cash at the casino cage, personal check or cashier’s check, Parx pre-paid card, or the PayNearMe function available at 7-Eleven, CVS, and Family Dollar stores. Unfortunately, credit cards and online services such as ****** are not available at this time.

Parx is coming out swinging with two promotions to attract new customers.

One is an initial First-Bonus Bet of up to $250. It’s exactly what it sounds like: If your first bet loses, you’ll get a Bonus Bet for the same amount, up to a maximum of $250.

There’s also a $10 Bonus Bet just for registering. Bettors don’t even have to make a deposit in order to take advantage of this opportunity to dip a toe.

Odds comparison

The Parx online sportsbook just launched this afternoon so we haven’t been able to perform a complete inventory check, but it appears on first glance that it’s offering the exact same markets as Play SugarHouse.

For example, while some New Jersey books have NBA 2019-’20 season win total over/unders posted for every team, Kambi only has lines up for 25 teams, leaving out such notables as the Pelicans and Knicks. So with Kambi powering both PA books, you simply can’t make these particular bets legally on your computer in Pennsylvania.

That said, the pricing is not identical across the board.

In every single one of tonight’s MLB games, whether looking at the moneyline, run line, or total runs, Parx is charging a higher vig than SugarHouse. For example, in the Phillies-Mets game, the Phillies are -143 favorites at Parx and -139 at SugarHouse, while the Mets pay +118 at Parx and +123 at SugarHouse. (These numbers are, of course, subject to constant change.)

It’s a matter of a few pennies on the dollar, but Parx figures to face an uphill battle at the moment to attract bets from the most discerning gamblers. Maybe it will hurt the sportsbook out of the gate, maybe it won’t. But the competition is going to get serious soon, with FanDuel Sportsbook’s PA online launch believed to be just around the corner.

June handle getting a boost

Online sports betting handle in Pennsylvania in May came in at about $570k, a number that carries little weight since there was only one site and it was only active for the last four days of the month.

June’s number will be more meaningful, since Play SugarHouse will have been operational for the entire month. Still, the overall online betting handle will be difficult to analyze because it will now include two new sites taking bets for about a week.

Realistically, the industry shouldn’t expect these numbers to begin to normalize until roughly September, when football season is underway, soft-launch season has wound down, and an advertising blitz is hitting PA customers.

July 15 remains the planned date for online casino and poker to launch at some Pennsylvania sites. The addition of those verticals figures to help push the state’s sports betting market closer to maturity, and vice versa.

BetRivers Brings Online Betting To Pittsburgh Sports Betting Scene

The drip of online sports betting is now starting to flow.

Rivers Casino Pittsburgh launched its online sportsbook, BetRivers, on June 25.

It is the third online sportsbook in Pennsylvania. Parx’s online sports betting platform launched on June 24. PlaySugarHouse.com launched the first app online sports betting market in the state at the end of May.

Hours for the two-day test period for BetRivers are:

Tuesday, June 25, from 4 p.m. to midnight

Wednesday, June 26, from 2 p.m. to midnight

All bets placed during the test are real-money wagers, with complete features and options available. Pending review and approval from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB), 24/7 online and mobile wagering at BetRivers will start immediately thereafter.

Pittsburgh’s first sportsbook

Western Pennsylvania joins the online sports betting game with BetRivers. Rivers Casino Pittsburgh is the only casino in the second-largest city in Pennsylvania

“This summer marks Rivers Casino Pittsburgh’s 10th anniversary,” said Bill Keena, Rivers Casino general manager. “We’re celebrating one decade while planning ahead for the next. Full-service online, mobile and in-casino sportsbooks are where the industry is headed, and thanks to our Team Members, we’re already there.”

Online sports betting might be new to Pennsylvania, but users should get a familiar feeling with BetRivers. Rush Street’s in-house interactive unit oversees both BetRivers and PlaySugarHouse.com. The company works with lines provider Kambi on both books as well.

RSI has generated more than 50% of all retail sports betting in Pennsylvania since the market opened in November.

How to get started with BetRivers.com

Anyone can sign up for a BetRivers account, even if they are not in Pennsylvania. However, users must be physically located in Pennsylvania to wager and at least 21 years old.

Customers can access BetRivers via browser or app without setting up an account. You don’t even have to be in the state of Pennsylvania to view it, so long as you don’t want to deposit or bet.

If you do want to deposit or bet, you will need to set up an account. There is also the option for fast registration using an existing Rush Rewards or Casino4Fun account.

Here is the personal information required. It must be entered as it appears on your government-issued identification:

Name
Date of birth
Last four digits of your Social Security number
Email address
Phone number
Address

To access on your desktop, visit pa.betrivers.com.

Android users must also visit the website on their mobile devices and download the app to wager. Apple users can register using their mobile devices but will need to wager via laptop or desktop computer. Betting from iPhones and iPads will hopefully be available soon.

What can I bet on?

How ’bout dem ‘Stillers? They are currently listed +220 to win the Super Bowl. The lines are up for NFL Week 1 and the Steelers are +6 for their matchup against the defending Super Bowl champs New England Patriots.

Think the Pirates can climb out of the basement and make a pennant run? You’d make more than a few “bucs.” The Pirates are +15000 to win the World Series.

BetRivers offers an extensive menu of sports to choose from including:

Baseball
Basketball
Boxing
College sports
Football
Golf
Hockey
Motorsports

Bonus money will be credited to the player’s regular bonus bank within 24 hours. All bonus money in the bonus bank always has a 1x wagering requirement.
It is up to the player if and when to activate the bonus money and start the playthrough requirement. However, the player needs to activate and play through the bonus money within 30 days after being credited with the bonus money; otherwise, it will expire.

First impressions of BetRivers

The BetRivers app isn’t splashy. But like Ben Roethlisberger in the fourth quarter, it gets the job done. It’s simple and easy to use. The newsfeed that shows screen names of users who win is a common feature of online casino games. It doesn’t add any real value to BetRivers. Except maybe the screen names that exalt Roethlisberger and burn Tom Brady.

Sports betting marries slot play with jackpot parlay. It’s a feature on PlaySugarHouse.com and it carried over to BetRivers. Jackpot parlay is a computer-generated parlay created for a chance to win big.

The bettor can simply hit the “jackpot parlay” button and “place bets.” Or they can select a few criteria.

Consider it a lottery ticket with live action rooting interest included.

“It takes some elements from a slot machine and adds a sports twist to it,” explained Mattias Stetz, chief operating officer of Rush Street Interactive.

“The games are randomly generated, and if you want different games you can click the ‘re-pick’ button, and the randomizers spit out a new selection, very much like spinning a slot machine. You can even hold on to one or two games and re-pick the rest, just like in a video poker game.”

BetRivers and Parx Casino receive final approval for online sports betting in Pennsylvania

After the soft launch test period, both companies' sportsbook are available online and mobile 24/7. Unlike Android phones, Apple's iPhones are still to allow new gambling-related apps due to new coding requirements imposed by the company. In coming months, six more casino sportsbooks are expected to add digital operations in Pennsylvania.

Rivers Casino’s new online sports betting website and app, branded as BetRivers, received approval Thursday from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board to begin full-time operations following a successful two-day test period this week. The casino is the third in the state to offer online sports betting, as Parx Casino in suburban Philadelphia became the second such site earlier this week, and is now available online 24/7 following a three-day soft launch period.

They follow affiliated Rush Street-owned property SugarHouse in Philadelphia, which in late May began operating Pennsylvania’s first legal online wagering site. That means that gamblers anywhere in Pennsylvania can use computers, phones and other devices to place wagers quickly on the same sports and with all of the same options as has been the case, for instance, since the Rivers Casino’s physical sportsbook opened inside the North Shore facility in December.

The casino has been handling about $9 million monthly in sports wagers placed in person at the sportsbook that is undergoing a relocation and $5 million construction project set for completion in the fall, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. That amount of wagers is expected to be surpassed by those who now can bet online.

The approval means that the gaming board was satisfied with the Rivers and Parx’s test-period operations, such as the handling of financial accounting, customer interaction, responsible gambling features, and controls designed to ensure bets are placed only by gamblers within Pennsylvania who are at least 21 years old.

Just as gamblers have opened SugarHouse accounts through checking accounts, credit cards, debit cards, ****** and other means, they could deposit funds into Rivers or Parx online accounts. And in coming months, they could do so the same at six more casino sportsbooks that are expected to add digital operations.

At each of the three current sites, the odds on games won’t be much different because their point spreads and other betting options are all created by European firm Kambi. There are different marketing promotions at each site, however. Just like at SurgarHouse, the Rivers will match any deposit up to $250 made by new players, essentially doubling their initial funds for wagering.

Regarding the apps’ availability, unlike Android phones, Apple’s iPhones are apparently months away from allowing new gambling-related apps due to new coding requirements the company has imposed. On July 15, the new online gambling in Pennsylvania is expected to offer casino games such as slots, blackjack and poker, according to the gaming control board’s last announcement.

Rivers Casino sportsbook

Rivers Casino on Thursday unveiled renderings of an expanded, permanent sportsbook planned for the North Shore casino. The $5 million construction project is expected to open this fall, according to a statement from Rivers.

The casino opened the temporary sportsbook in December, offering legal bets on sports including football, baseball, hockey, boxing and basketball. Since then, the Rivers sportsbook has become one of the highest-performing in the state.

It brought in the largest handle — $7.9 million of the statewide total of $35.4 million — of the state’s eight sportsbooks in May, according to figures provided by the state Gaming Control Board.

The new sportsbook will be located in the 5,500-square-foot area formerly occupied by Levels Lounge, according to a statement from Rivers. It will include club chairs and seating for about 195 guests, along with two 50-foot-by-7-foot LED monitors and 24, 86-inch flat-screen monitors. There will be 18 self-service betting kiosks and six betting windows.
