Golden State Warriors star Kevin Durant has declined his $31.5 million player option and will become an unrestricted free agent, league sources told ESPN.

Durant's business manager, Rich Kleiman, informed Warriors general manager Bob Myers of the decision in recent days.

Durant and Kleiman are together in New York, where they've been mulling Durant's free-agency options. So far, it has been a fairly clandestine process.

Durant is still considering a number of scenarios in free agency, including a return to Golden State, league sources tell ESPN. The New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets and LA Clippers are also believed to be considerations, sources said.

Durant, 30, can sign a four-year, $164 million deal with another team, and remains eligible to sign a five-year, $221 million deal with the Warriors.

Durant, a two-time NBA Finals MVP with the Warriors, suffered a torn Achilles tendon in Game 5 of the Finals on June 10 and is expected to need the 2019-20 season to fully rehabilitate the injury.

Every team pursuing him is expected to still offer him a full max contract.

Damaged goods and odds are he'll never be the same player but too many teams will still take the chance and offer that super max.

Because he can go get paid elsewhere to rehab with new doctors and an organization that wants to treat him like THE guy. He doesn't like them for what they did and he shouldn't. Unethical shit

Disagree kinda

He told them he could and wanted to play.

He's more to blame than anyone else.

Also the reason he's leaving is because all of the chatter that was going around as to how the team was just as good without him.

I knew as soon as I heard that he'd be leaving because we in the Orlando area suffered the same thing when Penny came along and ppk were saying the same nonsense.

The whole point is he was pressured into playing mostly because the team doctors labeling it mild when it was never mild so then he has to deal with the backlash if he sits because it’s mild apparently which it never was

he may have left regardless but to say he’s not rightfully upset with the team is kinda crazy. They have to look out for the health of their players and with him they didn’t

That had almost nothing to do with Shaq leaving Orlando. The owner and gm badly botched that one.

Sure it did SS

I remember like it was yesterday.

Fans began giving him hell for not hitting free throws.

It was in all the newspapers

Talk about how we had Hardaway now and the sky was the limit with or without Shaq.

Shaq had already hinted about LA life, and all of that sealed the deal just like the idiotic talk about the Warriors being just as good without Durant pissed him off too.

You think these guys don't hear that stuff and have emotions like the rest of us and decide, "Ok I'll show you all" ??

Still a chance KD stays though because he wants more rings than LeBron and it may be the best place for that to happen.

Is the NBA popular enough to support these salaries ?

NBA teams earn more than enough money to pay these salaries. Which is why management is willing to lose a season to keep a salary cap that restricts the free-market any time negotiations come up

I know, somebody else is going to choose to pay him that money to sit out a year?

Just one time I'd love to see this blow up in an athlete's face, but it never does.

Should have blown up on ARod II, but the Yankees took an unwanted player back and still paid him after the market didn't
