I had a decent size play (for my standards) on the redsox vs blue jays under 9.5. I put in the play this morning.

On my way home from work, I made mental note to double check the starting pitchers but I was sidetracked by a few things.

I was following game on my phone and on mlb network (amongst other games). Even watched the last 2 innings and sweated game out. Score was 6-3 in bottom of 8.

Game ended 6-3 and I win!!

15 min later and I check my balance and something didn’t seem right. My blue jays “listed pitcher” didn’t come into the game til the 2nd inning. Game was “no action”. I push. Dammit!!

damn Canadians screw me on the eve on an american holiday!! :)

til tomorrow

Yeah there is lots of that going on this year. Tampa does it all the time. Certainly have to be aware.

Yes. I noticed that. The "starter" went one stinking inning. Then they brought in the listed starter.

Weird. I'd love to hear the explanation for that. Maybe the "listed" guy didn't get to the park on time.

There are numerous smart reasons for delaying the entry of man slated for *bulk innings* (target of 12 to 15 Outs)

Most notable is the data showing that for nearly all pitchers with a history over 50 starts; their results pitching third time thru the order are significantly worse.

So as the pitcher concludes facing 18 batters, manager consults the game score and decides if he wants to allow exposure to additional batters.

When the team uses a short innings man to work first five to seven batters (1.0 to 2.0 IP) the *bulk guy* most often enters versus the 7-9 portion of opposing lineup. In optimal result, he then faces 18 batters (approx 4 to 5 IP) at which point his 19th, 20th and 21st batter faced are same bottom of order guy.

At this point, we have now completed six full IP and possibly into the 7th inning at which point the manager shifts to more traditional tactics to cover the final six to nine outs.

Since initiating the 'Opener' strategy in mid May 2018 the TB Rays have won 59.5% of (approx 200) overall games and have posted the second best ERA in MLB. During that time they have only employed a traditional full *starter* in about 2/3 of all games.

Should be noted that in virtually all *Opener* starts, the Rays publicly announce the RP Opener well before game time thus making him the Listed Starter for sports bets.

Yankees doing it too with Chad Green and whole bullpen games, different game with 13 pitchers, seems to work, in the Yankees case start with the not so hot reliever in the 1st instead of the 6th, then your 5 inning mediocre starter to hopefully pitch until the 6th, 7th if you're really lucky, then the good relievers for 8 & 9th innings. It's not going away anytime soon and more teams will copy this tactic, just like the shift. These hitters need to learn how to bunt to defeat the shift, a fast guy could get a double that way !

I'm pretty sure they get there hours early even if no way they are playing that game, unless you're Roger Clemens

I wonder if Vegas will eventually make a rule that the listed pitcher “must pitch” instead of “must start”?

I doubt it Knight. They should be able to handle the variance since it can favor them just as well as the bettor.

This concept is going to seriously mess up player's stats , a lot of players care about their personal stats a lot more than team success.

Closers are such Prima Donna's with getting their stupid saves. Rules are screwed up big time for stats. A guy can come in , in the ninth up 3 runs, give up 2 and be on the mound for the team win with the bases loaded on a strikeout, and be credited with a save !

How about giving him a ABTG ?

Almost Blew The Game

A veteran starter can be up one run in the fifth, have a high pitch count, has lost the plate, is totally gassed, and the manager leaves him in so he can get a win, usually ends up with a 3-run double or a home run, or at least a walk.

These openers are great for the stats of a starter, or do we call them inning-eaters know ?

The starter can come in, in inning two with a gift lead and an easy win, if down just one run and he gets bombed, opener gets the loss !

The opener can never win the game, only lose it, and always gets the top of the order hitters

Welcome to the show, kid..
You get to open against some powerhouse lineup !

Definitely makes W/L records even more worthless, screws up ERA also.

I can't argue with something that works, however. I'm not sold on the shift idea, it reminds me of poker, you have to bluff occasionally, well bunt into that shift sometimes, or learn how to do so for next season

Today's NYY game a good example, up 2 runs in the 9th, Chapman off course, he blows the lead let's in the tying runs, Yanks get 5 in top of 10th, Chapman credited with the win !

Wins mean nothing anymore, different in the days of a Ron Guidry going 25-3, you don't do that with luck !

Just use the right pitcher for the situation at hand.

I'd love to see Trump manage a baseball team, it would make Earl Weaver and Billy Martin look like corporate YES men !
