Mexico saw a record number of murders in the first six months of the year, with an average 94 killings each day, according to the Mexico News Daily.

The news outlet, citing figures from the secretariat of security and citizens protection, noted that June saw the most murders of any month on record, with more than 3,000 people killed.

The violence has reached such a fever pitch that Mexico President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who was sworn into office in December, has decided to send the National Guard to some areas, including Mexico City, a controversial move that critics say will not solve the high homicide rate and will instead lead to abuses.

Among the areas of the country with the most homicides are Mexico City, Veracruz, Chihuahua and Jalisco, the news outlet reported.

The state with the highest murder rate is Guanajuato, where the Jalisco New Generation and Santa Rosa de Lima cartels are engaged in a power struggle, according to the BBC.

For years, Mexico relied on the military to confront organized crime, in some cases even disbanding local police forces because they had been infiltrated by cartels.

The rise in homicides stands in contrast to the vow made by Lopez Obrador’s campaign to reduce violence in the country.

In an interview with Univision’s Jorge Ramos, Lopez Obrador argued that security was improving in Mexico.

“Our data shows that we’ve brought this situation under control,” he told Ramos.

But Ramos countered: “The data I have shows something else, you’re not controlling, to the contrary, many Mexicans continue to die.”

Security experts say fueling the rising violence is the fact that many cartels have splintered into factions that have engaged in increasingly bloody battles for control.

Negatives....don’t get involved in the cartel, Global warming is real out there. Pros.... Tacos are a lot cheaper than here.

Friend of mine lives in Guadalajara. Said DEA killed one of the main cartel bosses yesterday. And few hours later the cartel got their revenge by killing the head of their drug enforcement agency.

Mexico gets a bad wrap. But if you mind your business- it’s not that bad of a place. All we hear about with Mexico are the cartel and the corruption and the killings.

Mexico has a rate of five convictions for every 100 homicide victims, whereas the Americas as a whole have an average rate of 24 per 100 victims.

The conviction rate in Asia is 48, and in Europe 81, according to the United Nations.

The number of slain women was up from the prior year, with 861 investigations compared to 735 in 2017. The state of Mexico recorded the most killings of women with 110.

With about 30 seconds of research, I came up with , for a recent year

USA

330 M pop
17 k murders

Mexico

130 M pop
33k murders

Very roughly twice as many murders and a third of the population

Murder rate 5-6X higher ?

Sounds reasonable enough

I don't stand by those numbers, just a real quick look to try and put into perspective in my head

24 per 100 victims are convicted in the United States for murder? That seems hella low.

I thought so to......it depends on where you get info from.

There’s a nearly 40 percent chance you’ll get away with murder in America

The police’s solve rate is even worse for other crimes.

If you murder someone in America, there’s a nearly 40 percent chance you’ll get away with it. If you severely assault someone, there’s a 50 percent chance. And if you commit any other crime, there’s a good chance you’ll get away with that, too.

My father in law is from Mexico (barely speaks English) and would frequent back & forth until recently.

He said it's getting bad everywhere.

Also have a friend I game with on Xbox for many years who says the same and that it's EVEN WORSE than we hear about but they keep it hush-hush for fear of hurting tourism. (That's an understatement)

15 years ago we took our kids and one friend each to an all inclusive in Cancun. One day we decided to go on a 25 cent bus ride just for fun and because it was so cheap. At the last stop in Cancun, the bus driver came up to us and said "I'm not sure where you're going, but you should get out here and head back".

We listened to him

Have you watched what's gone on in Chicago the last decade? they kill each other for sport - they know who killed who - and they won't help police

Wise choice

If you obviously don't belong somewhere, LEAVE !

A white man in a black ghetto is going to be a victim real quick.

A black man in a white suburb is safe, he might get slow service at a restaurant because the waitress making $2.13/ hour knows she is likely to get stiffed on the tip, so she gives better service to regulars and whites in general.

It is profiling for sure. Law enforcement like FBI and such analyze a major crime spree and create a profile all the time .

This unsub likely committed these 6 murders in this area, same MO, then they come up with a likely age range, racial guess, job guess and close in that way.

A big city cop has to take on the tactics of a Hank Voight in order to get things done.

Big city cop vs. suburb cop is like the difference of being in the Army and stationed at Fort Carson or being in Afghanistan

Totally different worlds often just a few dozen miles apart
