Thousands of new speed enforcement cameras are coming to New York City.
The state’s new speed law went into effect on Thursday — allowing city officials to dramatically expand the number of school zones with cameras from 225 now to 750 by June 2020.
Each zone will have multiple cameras. Tickets cost drivers $50.
The existing cameras have cut instances of speeding and traffic crashes at times and locations that they were allowed to operate, according to city data. Eighty percent of drivers don’t get flagged again after picking up their first offense.
“This is what happens when government works,” Assembly Member Victor Pichardo told reporters at a Thursday press conference held next to one of the new cameras in the Bronx.
“If you don’t speed, you won’t get a ticket. If you’re driving at an adequate speed, and you’re following all the traffic laws, you won’t get a ticket,” he added.
The city will roll out 40 cameras per month through the end of the year and 60 cameras per month through June 2020 – for a grand total of 750.
Cameras only snap drivers going 11 mph or more over the speed limit, and are only on between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. on weekdays.
