Sold our house and starting the build of a new one. Not sure I want to swing a pool and the costs with it but considering it. I live in Nebraska though so it's not like it will be used all year. We have a hot tub currently that we enjoy.

With that said doing research I get such a large range of prices I don't know what it would cost. I don't know the headache factor of maintenance costs, keeping people out of it (including animals), worrying about my kids or their friends drowning. I'd prefer to live on a lake but nothing closer than an hour away and we love our town and school system.

So those that have would you do it again? Or not worth it?

< $ 10,000 some 23 years ago. Our kids loved it when they were young and still use it to this day. I've been using it a lot more in recent years, and loving it. My grandkids are the next generation to come over. We throw multiple pool parties a year and we're putting a brand new composite deck on it this summer.

Yes it was worth it, and yes I would do it again. But we use it, not everybody does.

Kinda like timeshares, we love ours because we use ours and we take friends and family with us. So many people buy them then never use them, that's a waste.

I've seen people buying a lot of stuff they regret, with large boats and motor homes topping the list (along with timeshares).

I live in south florida so i have one.

I would assume a pool costs 30k?

When we were looking for houses, i didnt care if we had one or not but now that we do, i love it.

I grew up with a big pool that was deep. Now i have a smaller pool that isnt even 6 feet deep.

I actually like my smaller pool better than my big deep pool. With a big deep pool, you can only stand halfway through. With my small pool, i can stand anywhere in the pool.

My kids love playing in it and i have a small hot tub which they love as well.

If you were going to build a pool, i would do a smaller pool that doesnt go higher than 6 feet deep. Get a hot tub as well. My friend recently built a pool and he put a "seating area" in his pool but you can sit towards the deep end and still chill and out and drink.

I know you're a baseball dad. Nothing like coming home from a hot game, opening up the sliding glass door, and jumping in the pool!!

Costs 25k and you get ~7k back on value, at least in Texas

not as hard to maintain as some will have you believe

worth it imo

The up front cost sucks, maintenance costs are minimal, but be prepared to be a host. Everybody always wants to use the pool, and any summer holiday will be at your house.

I build them and service them very easy to maintain yourself but you have to keep up with chemistry. Any questions I can help you. Not sure what your options are gunite fiberglass or vinyl. I only build gunite aka concrete pools. What kind of pools are common there. Saline pools have been extremely popular last 10-20 years. If you got kids with skin conditions wife girlfriend that colors hair she will love it . Softer on the skin. However make sure if you have a salt pool installed make sure you install a zinc anode . A sacrificial node is huge in salt pools to deflect electrolysis so it doesn’t destroy your pool equipment patio and so on . Not expensive but very necessary. Any questions I can help you out seriously with service or construction. Any problems with water chemistry filtration hydraulics pump sizing heaters covers . Cost wise every region is different so can’t help you on comparing labor and material however any component you choose to put in pretty standard can help ya there

Automation controls can get super expensive . If you want simple user friendly automation make sure you need it . Will it be heated ? Lights don’t use old schoool 400-500 watt pool lights with bond wire. Go with either jandy or pentair leds . You can only put 4 lights on each controller so keep that in mind or you’ll have extra expense. Pumps in todays markets have built in capability of keeping time so if your not putting in automation save the money don’t buy timeclock pump already has it built in get a pentair variable speed. Make sure pool plumbing at least 2” so you have proper flow rates. If you are getting a salt system look into a uv light in addition. Also if you want salt before you add it get your chemistry spot on and add boric acid to pool and get level where needs to be and then add salt. It will keep your ph from going off the charts almost impossible to keep ph down in salt pool this works

great question. Wifey been bugging me to get a pool. I would not be opposed to buying a house with a pool, I just don't want to be the sucker that spends the money on one. Not just pool, you need fence, landscaping etc.

Yup they can be money pits especially if you don’t live in an area where you can’t keep them open all year. Winters can be harsh and pools take a beating just like anything else outside all the time. I don’t own a pool however if I did I would have an auto cover. If you are going to build one get a quote for a auto cover if gunite you want to get a encapsulation where cover goes underneath coping on one side with hidden leading edge. You will retain 10 to 15 degrees in spring or fall. I built one for a friend and he put in solar panels on garage with great southern exposure. I kid you not he swims up until Christmas in free heated pool . Propane and natural gas can get real expensive if your heating out of season . This where auto cover has serious benefits not to mention pool stays clean.

In the Jacksonville, FL area an average sized residential pool costs around $50K. In Englewood, FL area (south of Sarasota) pools are around $35K. I'm not sure why the big price difference, but the Englewood (Punta Gorda, Venice, Port Charlotte areas) is more retirees/elderly so that could have something to do with it. I have a friend in Jax (a retired jax firefighter) who is a pool builder and the $50K price is about what all the builders in the Jax beaches area are charging.

I had a pool in my first house (it was there when I bought it) and it was no hassle at all. I hear people complain and figure they must be lazy. I skimmed it daily and vacuumed it as needed. I took the water samples to Pinch-a-Penny and they tested it and told me what to put into the pool (shock). When I move back to Florida I plan to have a pool asap!

Automation is really what spikes the price especially in pool spa combo because the amount of equipment goes way up unless everything is shared system meaning pool filter and spa same as well as heater. The finish on a pool can add cost big time you go with a pebble tec finish or something like it can add 20k to price however before you freak average pools 20x40 8 feet deep and wall thickness of concrete 8” of shotcrete so if your going through 30+ cubic yards gets expensive .

There are some high end pools that people spend million + dollars on . I haven’t built any of these but seen a few perimeter overflows that are way cool.
Having a laminar effect that works properly in the right setting is pretty cool.if I can figure how to easily post pictures up I will put up a few shots of some kickass pools

Put one in last July when I got outvoted 1 to 1 by the wife. We live on the east coast of Florida so it's used year round. With that said I use it more then anybody which is what I knew was going to happen before we put it in. The pool itself cost me 36k then another 6k or so in new sod, new fence ect. It's nice and I can't argue against the pool sex but personally I would've rather taken that 42k and bought an investment property or at the very least used that money to put even more down on our house and had a tiny mortgage. As it is I bought a 185k house that is now worth about 260-270k less then 2 years later and I have a 130k mortgage on it. But that mortgage could've been about 90k had I gotten my way.
