A Utah couple that failed to stop at a police checkpoint in Mexico were ordered to get out of their car and were fatally shot execution-style in front of their 12-year-old son, according to reports.

Paul Nielsen, 52, and Janeth Vázquez, 43, and their son, Kevin, were traveling from Acapulco to a beach resort when they were killed as they drove through Petatlan last Thursday at 3.30 a.m, according to local news outlets.

Their son also was shot, but survived and suffered a nervous breakdown, the reports say. After he was released from a hospital, he was transported to the resort town of Zihuatanejo, where he gave law enforcement authorities an account of what happened.

When they reportedly failed to stop at the checkpoint, they were ordered to stop, get out of the car, and shot in the head at close range. The shooters then took their car and left.

Some local reports claimed that community police associated with the checkpoint – which is located in the town of Petatlan in the state of Guerrero -- shot the family. Some reports referred only to armed gunmen.

Efforts by Fox News to clarify the information through the press office of Guerrero Governor Hector Astudillo -- who was quoted in local reports as saying it was a priority to investigate the killings –were unsuccessful.

State police found their bodies and the injured boy, according to the Mexico Daily News.

Nielsen's relatives, who are working with the U.S. State Department to get the couple's bodies back to the United States, told reporters that he always followed rules, earning him the nickname "Perfect Paul."

Nielsen was originally from Salt Lake County, Utah, while his wife was from Puebla, Mexico, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

On a GoFundMe page set up for the couple's son, Nielsen’s sister wrote: “My brother Paul was killed in Mexico today 7/18/19. We are trying to raise enough money to help his family in any way they need. It is going to be a huge ordeal bringing his body back to the US and any amount will help. This is all the information we have at this time, I will update when we know more.”

Stay far away from Mexico, too dangerous......also, do not drive around at 3:30am in one of the most dangerous countries in the world.

Heck, I wouldn't drive around in most of Americas cities at 3:30am.

Just stay away from Mexico!

Yeah, that part bothers me.......people use to call the father, " Perfect Paul", if he did everything by the book, why put your wife & child's lives in danger driving around at 3:30am......nothing good happens in those late hours.

Then again, we all make mistakes, this one cost them their lives.

My Father-in-law is Mexican and barely speaks English.

He frequents Mexico to visit but says it's now getting bad everywhere and not dldays he's not sure if he's going back

I also have a friend in Mexico I've gamed with on Xbox for over 15 years and he said the exact same thing 2yrs ago .

Says it's far worse than anything you hear on the news as they keep everything hush-hush so it doesn't hurt tourism too much.

So I agree, stay away.

Just no reason to risk it I don't care how safe the popular tourist destinations are or used to be.

There may be more to this, but this is pretty disrespectful and irresponsible to say. So if they are driving at 3:30 am they were up to something? Ever take a trip and can't sleep and wanna get up and hit the road? I have, as have many others. Ever been to Vegas, or somewhere else playing poker or gambling and wandered out and drove home at God knows what time?? Kinda silly to just speculate like this. Unless there's more to the story, doesn't matter if it was noon, the facts are the facts.

I like to drive late at night too. I just feel safer when road tripping, because there is less traffic. The guys wife is Mexican, which is probably why he felt safe driving there. I don't think him driving late makes it fishy. If he was smugglin he'd probably do it during the day when there is more traffic and less likely to stand out. IDK. I like Mexico, but I wouldn't go unless it was on a plane and to a resort. My ex is Mexican and her and her family drive there all the time.

Well there's your problem, We Don't know the FACTS, only what the News outlets are reporting. disrespectful and irresponsible ?? I don't see it that way, it was only a Statement and opinion. I didn't say they were out robbing people. It's just not a Normal thing to do at 3:30AM in the morning

using Vegas as an example wouldn't fit for myself because I'm there on Vacation and staying at a Hotel. Have I taken a walk late at night in Las Vegas ? Yes
If Downtown I will take a walk over to another Casino
on the Strip I have walked to a Store along the Strip late at night. But since I've been there maybe 100 times over my lifetime I feel safe. Plus there are other people around and plenty of Lights.

I've been to many places in the world, mostly South America and the caribbean including Mexico and I have Never been out driving around at 3:30AM

I think everyone knows how bad places like Mexico, CR or the DR are like, I don't think you will see a ton of people driving around in the late night at any of them.
Most Resorts will tell you not to leave the property, especially on your own

I also would like for them to make up their mind, Police roadblock or a Armed Gang ???

Outlets in Mexico say local authorities are investigating the early morning execution, which has been condemned by Guerrero Gov. Hector Astudillo Flores as reprehensible.

Vilate Ssempala, Nielsen’s younger sister, told the Tribune that he and his wife had encountered a roadblock on the morning of their deaths, which appeared to have been set up by a local gang to extort travelers.

The couple was “intercepted” by the heavily armed group and “stripped” of their car, according to the Mexican outlet Reforma, before eventually being shot.
Nielsen’s family says it’s working with the US Embassy in Mexico to have his body returned.

Yeah but that was back in the early 90's. It has gotten worse since Dylan would head down there and do some blow.

Even this guy went crazy in Cancun before and nothing happened to me.

Maybe their flight got delayed or it landed late and they had no choice? Too many variables here.

I'm going to Cancun in Feb, not worried in the least.

Cancun is very resorty. Airport close by. I didn't even feel out of place but a Mexican cab driver called me a "tall American prick" I had some words for him too. Sub humans,

Acalpoca isn't the place you want to be driving in or out of anytime , and certainly not the wee hours of the morning. That area has deteriorated as much as anywhere outside of the border towns.. just plain dumb to put yourself in that position.. I've drove thru alot of areas of Mexico. Only in daytime , and toll roads if possible.. Im comfortable with most of it..

With all of that being said , you better stop at the checkpoints , unless you feel good about your chances in a gunfight.. I'm not..lol

What is the point of the checkpoints in Mexico?? Are they just trying to pretend they don't want drug trafficers?

I live about 3.5 hrs away from a medical-dental town called Los Algodones. Basically this town is built around dental offices, doctors, optometrists etc. They even have plastic surgeons that advertise procedures, although I'm not sure who would entertain that. I have been down there 10 times at least in the last 5 years, it's right across the border from Yuma, AZ. You can park on the US side and then walk across. I would say every time I've been down there it's 99% Americans-Canadians that populate the town. I have never felt unsafe, only time I have ever been hassled if you even wanna call it that, is by street vendors selling their trinkets and bags. I've always thought to myself if someone from the USA or Canada ever got harmed or killed there, the town would completely die and shut down and nobody would go there. I suppose that line of thinking may be flawed though after reading a story like this.

BAS, I may have been a little harsh, although I just don't think cause it's 3:30 am means the family was asking for trouble. Unfortunate no matter which way you look at it.
