A shooting on the 215 Freeway in Riverside County involving the California Highway Patrol Monday evening has prompted a large response from law enforcement.

Details of the incident were unclear, but it appears at least one CHP cruiser was fired upon. Video reviewed by KTLA News showed officers and perhaps others were injured along with the sounds of gunfire.

“Please say some prayers for the CHP officers involved,” wrote state Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez (D-Lake Elsinore) on Twitter.

A California Highway Patrol dispatcher said the department was responding to reports of gunfire but could not provide details. A Riverside County Fire Department dispatcher said the agency was requested to respond to Box Springs Boulevard and Eastridge Avenue.

CHP cruisers, fire engines, and ambulances were on the 215 Freeway at Box Springs. Helicopters were flying overhead. At least one cruiser had bullet holes in the windshield.

The freeway was closed, and Caltrans was urging people to avoid the area. Metrolink said the tracks near the incident have also been shut down and that trains have been diverted.

UPDATE: 1 Officer dead... 2 more injured *conditions unknown*

A California Highway Patrol officer was killed and two other officers were wounded in a wild shootout Monday evening off the 215 Freeway in Riverside that also left the gunman dead and motorists dodging bullets.

The conditions of the other two officers were unknown, according to the Riverside Police Department. The suspect, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to initial reports from law enforcement at the scene, a CHP motorcycle officer stopped the driver for an unknown offense.

The suspect is believed to have opened fire on the officer after reaching into his truck and pulling out a rifle after his vehicle was impounded, according to initial reports. It is unclear why the vehicle was being impounded.

The officer returned fire, and the two other CHP officers soon arrived and engaged the suspect in a gun battle. Law enforcement officers from local agencies also arrived to help.

Dozens of rounds were fired at the scene, according to law enforcement.

It is unknown whose gunfire killed the suspect; that will be determined by the Riverside County coroner, according to officials.

Several sources said the suspect was still up and shooting when county sheriff’s deputies and a Riverside police officer arrived.

“We don’t know why,” Riverside police spokesman Ryan Railsback said of the gunman’s motive. “That is all going to be part of this lengthy investigation.”

“Please say some prayers for the CHP officers involved,” wrote state Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez (R-Lake Elsinore) on Twitter.

Jennifer Moctezuma, 31, of Moreno Valley was driving home with her 6-year-old twins when a bullet flew through her front windshield.

Retired Marine Charles Childress, 56, also of Moreno Valley, was in the car behind them when he heard gunfire and saw the bullet that went through Moctezuma’s windshield.

He then heard the children screaming and knew he had to get the family out of the car in front of him.

“I was 21 years in the Marine Corps, and my training just kicked in,” Childress said.

Childress led Moctezuma and her two children, all of whom were unharmed, as they crawled down to the bottom of the bridge away from the gunfire.

“He’s my hero,” Moctezuma said. “He’s my hero.”

A California Highway Patrol dispatcher said the department responded to reports of gunfire but could not provide details. A Riverside County Fire Department dispatcher said the agency was requested to respond to Box Springs Boulevard and Eastridge Avenue.

CHP cruisers, fire engines and ambulances were on the 215 Freeway at Box Springs.

The freeway was closed, and Caltrans urged people to avoid the area. Metrolink said that the tracks near the incident had been shut down and that trains had been diverted.

At least you posted the story. Kudos and respect to you.

But just saying if this was a black guy killing a white cop it would have 20+ replies already guaranteed. That’s just the facts.

The first 5 posters would be saying this......”You see. Look at this criminal. He’s a thug.” Somebody else will say, “this is the problem with our country. THEY are the problem.” Two others would call it “liberalism.” And also for sure, “Mob’s black friends are killing cops again.”

Thats just facts man.

But with how rare it is for a cop to die on the line of duty like this....it turns out it’s a white guy. Looks like white trash. I’ll say it because no one else will.

Until next time guys.

Killer looks like Charles Manson. This piece of garbage should never have been on the streets. It is time to institute capital punishment for armed robbery and up. I would make it for the first offense.

Try to tell me if this guy were black there wouldn’t be 3-4 overall wearing tree poisoners in here from Bama talking about how blacks are the problem in society being the issue. This story doesn’t fit so all of them avoid. You guys need to learn from Kenny. Think. Be more tolerant. Less racially biased.

Hold on a minute, I defended your post. I wouldn't exactly call me tolerant. I would call me reasonable.

I'm a conservative who fully believes in the Second Amendment. But I also believe that rapid fire weapons should be banned just like crazy big weapons are.

I believe that Trump recently signed an executive order banning bump stocks. I agree with that signing.
