The coolest you should keep your house is 78 degrees, federal program recommends

Energy Star also said you should set your thermostat to 82 degrees when you're sleeping. :ohno::ohno::ohno:

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Federal program Energy Star might not have been thinking of Floridians when it made recommendations for in-home air conditioners.

Consumer Reports last month released some settings recommendations for air conditioners to help cut down energy usage and cost. Even in relatively mild areas of the U.S. that don't consistently experience long-term heat waves, energy bills can still shoot up in the summer months.

Energy Star, the federal program from the DOE and the Environmental Protection Agency, said the coolest you should keep your home is 78 degrees when you're home.

When you're at work or away, the program recommends setting it at 85 degrees. When you're sleeping, Energy Star said to set the thermostat at 82 degrees.

New report our shows these as the recommended temps for energy efficiency:

• 78° F when you’re home
• 85° F when you’re at work or away
• 82° F when you’re sleeping

I will say that this depends on where you live. I live in central Florida so if you set your temp at 76 it just feels better then if you live in Michigan and set it on 76. With that said energy star can eat a dick. I try to be conservative with my temps and i go 73-74 at night and 76-77 during the day. I'll put it on 82 when we go on vacation.

Did a woman come up with that night time temp? At least she won’t need a blanket in dead of summer because she’s too cold...:pointer:

If you're away for like a week, or even a few days, just turn the themostat to 100 degrees or whatever, does your sofa need air conditioning ?

Na dog.
My car just read 114 degrees.
75 when not home
72 when home all weekend
70 at night

At most places around here...you see a lot of people wearing light jackets or sweaters inside when it’s a hundy out because every place cranks it so low.

I read this in the morning & thought whoever came up with those numbers is freaking crazy.......my aunt keeps her house at 78, & when I visit her, I'm sweating & can't wait to get out of there.

I'm at 74 from 10am until 10pm.......73 from 10pm until 10am

I also think what kind of AC you have makes a difference. My sister keeps her house at 72 24/7 & she says my house is colder than hers at 73. Both homes are approximately the same size.

Especially casinos, pisses me off when you need at least a long sleeve shirt when it's 105 degrees outside.

How do y’all know how exact the temperature is like at work? Just seems odd to quote all that.

93 degrees when I walk outside

80 degrees when I sit down after lunch but I’m still hot from being outside so maybe feels like 84 at first.

76 indoors

That was fun.

No but seriously, I enjoyed the article
