Gronkowski: Football was bringing me down

Former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski became emotional Tuesday morning when describing his decision to retire from the NFL in March.

"I want to be clear to my fans. I needed to recover. I was not in a good place. Football was bringing me down, and I didn't like it. I was losing that joy in life," Gronkowski said, fighting back tears.

Gronkowski's remarks came at an announcement that he will be an advocate for players to be allowed to use CBD products for pain relief. He left the door open to possibly un-retire, saying, "physically, I could play right now" but added he is not there mentally.

Gronkowski detailed how he sustained a quad injury in Super Bowl LIII, and he knew that he was retiring after that.

"I got done with the game and I could barely walk," he said. "I slept five minutes that night. I couldn't even think. I was in tears in my bed after a Super Bowl victory. It didn't make that much sense to me. And then, for four weeks, I couldn't even sleep for more than 20 minutes a night. I was like, 'Damn, this sucks.' It didn't feel good.

"It was one of the biggest, deepest thigh bruises I've ever gotten," he added, noting it led to significant internal bleeding.

Gronkowski was 29 when he retired, the same age as Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, who shocked the NFL on Saturday by retiringbecause of the toll injuries have taken on his body. Gronkowski said he felt empathy for Luck.

Gronkowski told those in attendance in New York that he's in a better place now and "very satisfied with where I am in life now."

"I truly believe going through those tough times, nine years -- off the field, on the field -- has brought me to this point and I believe I'm on the right path in my life," he said.

"It's a purpose to have passion in my life, to have joy in my life. And then to inspire optimal health within myself, I need to do that in order to get to a peak and then I can bring it to other people. Because I know [in] the NFL, players are dealing with that kind of stuff, they're dealing with pain. I was. And I needed to walk away because I needed to do what was best for myself."

Not a chance.

I dont think he or Luck ever return to the NFL. Would give Luck a small edge to comeback but I don’t see it. Players who retire and come back don’t have reasons for retiring in the first place. If it’s about your health, you never come back. Doesn’t make any sense to do so.

Remember the goat, Brett Favre, would waver every single offseason for about 8 straight years until finally retiring(didn’t want to lol). And then came back and wanted to play for the packers, they ended up saying no and Favre was traded to the Jets. Had them at 8-3 before tearing his labrum in his shoulder. Retired again. Came back for the Vikings and had possibly the greatest season of his career and one of the best seasons by any quarterback in the history of football. There isnt a day that goes by that I don’t think about that nfc champ game. Greatest game I’ve probably ever seen. Turned it over 5 times and got fucked by the refs and still went to overtime to get robbed some more and then finally lose.

Never said he was. You must need to change your diaper!

Doesnt really make a difference. It is the narrative that all of your friends are painting in the aftermath, so be it.

Gronk has three rings and will enter the HOF as one of the best TE's of all time.

The Colts traded their franchise QB and legend away. They SUCKED FOR LUCK, they made him their future, for that they have zero titles and a 4 - 4 post season record.

The Luck experiment was a bust. Luck won't sniff the HOF

Luck was mercilessly booed off the field by Colts' fans. Gronk is adored by Patriots' fans

There is no comparison between the two men

We're asking for nothing more from Gronk, while Colts fans feel cheated and shortchanged

While all that might be true......

When Gronk was hurt, which was fairly often the Patriots barely skipped a beat. Over a pretty large sample over a bunch of years. They won titles with him and without him. Their record is about the same with or without him, etc.

When Luck was healthy they are a playoff team. 4-4 is actually a pretty good postseason record. Many "great QB's" W/L records are not great in the postseason. His teams weren't very talented either. When Luck was hurt the Colts were a below average team.

Luck was worth probably an extra 4-6 wins per year for the Colts. While Gronk was worth maybe 1 win per year if you are being generous.

Despite all you said being true Luck was way more impactful as a player then Gronk.

What was the over / under on Colts' wins before Luck retired?

Will be interesting how they measure up with Jacoby Brissett.

From all accounts from people that know Luck and Gronk, they are both quality human beings off the field.

Just because Luck didn't live up to fans expectations and retired abruptly, does not make him any less of a man than Gronk.

Let’s just call it what it is, these guys aren’t real men and your avg RXer would walk up them, call them a pussy and tell them to look at the ground until they say they’re allowed to look up.

I'm talking about accomplishments on the football field, I can't judge either man off the field and I don't

What does that have to do with coming out of retirement?
