Taking a 'look back' at Week 3 college football.

*AP Poll: 1. Clemson...2. Alabama...3. Georgia...4. LSU...5. Oklahoma...6. Ohio State
7. Notre Dame...8. Auburn...9. Florida...10. Utah. (I would take Auburn and Florida out
and replace them with Texas and Wisconsin)

*Ohio State has outscored opponents 138-31 so far under new coach Ryan Day who had
only four starters returning on offense.

*Kansas State won its first road game over a Power 5 nonconference opponent since 2011
with the win over Mississippi State.

*Arizona State has given up only 3 TDs in three games and none of their opponents have
scored in the first three quarters.

*Because of the weather, Iowa and Iowa State shorten their halftime but the game still took
5 hours, 53 minutes to complete.

*With a new AD, the next four weeks could very well determine USC's football coach's future
and it starts with Utah Friday night in primetime TV.

*Illinois paid Eastern Michigan 1 million dollars for the game Saturday and lost. Lovie Smith
my ass!

*The biggest surprise of the season so far is the emergence of LSU quarterback Joe Burrow as
a legitimate NFL prospect.

*Heading into this week's big game against Wisconsin, Michigan ranks 12th in the Big Ten in
scoring offense and 9th in total offense.

*In the Troy/Southern Miss game Saturday, both teams scored 21 points in 36 seconds. That
has to be a record.

*Temple had not one, not two, but 3 goal line stands in the 20-17 win over Maryland. The Terps
were just 6 of 27 on 3rd and 4th down attempts.

*Take a bow Les Miles...Kansas snapped a 48 game road losing streak by defeating Boston College
48-24.

*Florida quarterback Feleipe Franks is probably lost for the season with a dislocated ankle. His
backup Kyle Trask did a nice job in the comeback win over Kentucky.

*If there is a better RB in the SEC than Georgia's D'Andre Swift...I haven't seen him. Swift is the
real deal.

*The Citadel visited Georgia Tech as a 27 point underdog and won the game 27-24 in overtime.
Georgia Tech paid the Cadets $400,000 for embarrassing them.

*Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence threw for 395 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in the win
over Syracuse. After throwing just 4 ints all of last year, he has thrown 5 already this season.

*Washington State continues to look good on offense as senior QB Anthony Gordon threw for 440
yards and 3 touchdowns in win over Houston.

*UCLA drops to 0-3 on the season and have lost 12 of 15 games under second year coach Chip
Kelly.

*Gutwrenching loss for Kentucky to Florida. The Wildcats could have sealed the game on several
occasions but simply blew it away.

*Central Florida easily took down Stanford 45-27 posting 545 offensive yards and leading 31 points
at halftime.

*South Carolina freshman QB Ryan Hilinski threw for 324 yards and 2 TDs in his second college start
against Alabama. Lots of poise and potential with this young kid.

*Though Iowa State gained 105 more yards than Iowa, the Hawkeyes did just enough to stay un-
beaten in their 18-17 win.

*Alabama rushed for just 77 yards against South Carolina snapping a streak of 69 straight games
with at least 100 yards rushing.

*Auburn piled up 467 yards rushing against a high school team Saturday with three players going
for over 100 yards.

*Michigan State lost to Arizona State after making a field goal to tie the game but had too many
players on the field...then missed the second try. Man...I would hate to be the special team's coach
this week!

*Utah had 11 penalties for 105 yards against mighty Idaho State Saturday. Don't know about you
but I'm just not sold on Utah at this time.

*Seven different players scored touchdowns in Georgia's pounding of Arkansas State. The Dawgs
are one impressive team and will have a chance to prove it against Notre Dame this week.

*Shout out to 3-0 Arizona State. Must say I thought hiring Edwards was a terrible move by the
school. So far...he's been impressive.

*Oklahoma's Jalen Hurts had another big game leading the Sooners over UCLA. Hurts passed for
three TDs and ran 14 times for 150 yards and a score.

*SALUTE: Air Force 30-23.....Army 31-13....Navy 42-10. Love our military teams!

Big games this week: #7 Notre Dame at #3 Georgia and #11 Michigan at #13 Wisconsin.

I have no love for Michigan State but I do respect coach Dantonio. But this one is on him, not the special teams coach. They had 2nd down with under ten seconds left and no timeouts (because he burned two of them in AZ St's game winning drive). The offense quickly lined up for a play call. The call started coming in when Dantonio said, No, kick it now. (afraid time would expire if tackled on the field) So the special team rushes out there and the offense rushes off in the confusion. No time to count the players, they kick it. Ref throws a flag and then all ref's huddle. Then they go to reply and count the 12.
The game had PAC-12 refs and let me tell you they are awful. Went both ways though. MSU had a PI keep their final drive going, it wasn't a PI. I saw earlier a hold call on MSU. Reply showed two hands to the face of the tackle called for holding. Should have been off setting, IMO. And the AZ ST player leaps over MSU line on the final miss FG. No doubt a leaping penalty but never called. Really bad, both ways. No excuses for MSU tough.

How the hell can you put Wisconsin in the top ten after beatdowns of CMU and USF??? Maybe after this weekend, but right now that would be like putting Maryland in the top ten after week #2.

The Alabama defense looks to be the weakest I've seen in the Saban era. They are still very good but they will have their hands full all year against decent QBs.

Good point Stevie. Jalen will go down as one of Alabama's all time best quarterbacks.
Unfortunately for him, he was beat out by Bama's most talented QB ever.

Not making excuses but Bama is having to play a lot of young players. Watching a true freshman QB pick them apart Saturday
is concerning. What's more concerning to me is the running game heading into the SEC schedule. The passing attack may prove
to be the best in Alabama history and this is the best receiver corps I have every seen in Tuscaloosa and I have been following
Bama football for a long, long time. Still need a strong rushing attack to complement a high level passing game to win a championship.

Not gonna get much sympathy when you have 100 players on your roster who were 4 and 5 star recruits

Might be the best thing that happened to him. Now he got the best QB coach in college who spit out the last two Heisman. Fate is funny. A great coach can bring out the best in good QB but a bad coach can ruin a great one (aka BO)

cloverleaf, thank you for the excellent summary, very interesting stuff!

I noticed, non conference games early in the season, often the visitor's conference supplies the referees.

I wonder if that has ever been tracked, or taken into consideration, saw a few very questionable calls in favor of the visitors, especially those that are projected to be top bowl teams, or even playoff team contenders.

Do the visiting conference refs want to protect them?

Serbone, I haven't seen any data or trends on the subject. You are correct about Power 5 nonconference visiting teams
bringing their own officials...that's been going on for some time. I know most neutral-site games and bowl games are
typically worked by officials from a third conference.

There should come a time when questions aren't raised about where officials grew up, where they went to school or
what conference employs them. Too much money riding on these game nowadays.

What's interesting to me Stevie is No. 8 Auburn is a 4 point dog to No. 17 Texas A&M. My personal view is Gatewood
should play more than he has the past three games. He's big and can run, something Auburn needs with that offense.

2 things:

1. Florida sucks.....dont buy into the rankings

2. GT of all teams couldn't stop the option. I am sure Paul Johnson had a deep smile from within after that embarrassment
