I'm thinking seriously about trying to learn how to write code but don't know the first thing about the best, easiest or just how to start. Would any of you guys out there have any suggestions, websites or how to go about learning more? I'm thinking if I could spend 30 minutes a day,(15 hours a month), maybe in a year I might have a little grasp on it. Appreciate any responses.cheersgif

Why, what are you gonna do with it? Not discouraging you, just curious

This is a good question.

The language you choose should be based on what you want your program(s) to execute. The first language I learned was BAL (assembler). BAL will give you all the keys to the kingdom. But BAL is more difficult to learn than say COBOL.

COBOL is easier to learn but there are more rules that you have to follow. That is because COBOL automatically does more commands for you (macros).

Fortran is a solid mathematics language.

No doubt there are newer compilers out there. It's been quite a while since I wrote code.

I write code for a living, and have been for 30 years. The previous poster was correct, in that there are many different types of code out there.

Web programming (client side) is very different from writing server-side programs, as is very different from writing operating system code - or device driver/kernel code.

Hard-core programming is not easy, and not something you can just pick up here and there. I have both a BS and MS in Computer Science, and couldn't imagine trying to learn that stuff using some tutorials online or something. Not to dissuade you, because I have seen people that have picked it up on their own... it's just not as easy as some may think.

Thanks for the responses guys. I would ultimately like to be able to take info off the internet, assign my own #'s to the info and be able to put those #'s into a logarithm and just have the # spit out for me. Doing it now with paper and pen I enjoy but it is somewhat time consuming.

I understand totally and.I would more than likely be one that couldn't pick it up easily. 1981 I started Junior college for.computer science but quit. I'm an idiot. LOL

Would you say python is the best to learn for data scraping or is there something else you would recommend? I've always heard python is the easiest to learn.
