Butterfly sweep to elevation to single leg X to heel hook, Askren butt scoots away correctly, Maia beats him to the top position by elevating the heel hook leg, immediately leg drag passes to mount, peppers Askren with a few shots, Askren sees 90+ seconds on the clock and knows he can't sit under mount, correctly hip escapes to try to collect half guard, Maia switches to S-Mount, pulls Askren into back mount, body triangle and find the squeeze. Maia has a fairly simple game as far as jiu jitsu goes - he's old school. He just gives 0 space - everything is so tight.

Askren would've been better off slowly making his way up the ladder in the UFC. I'm not sure if Roufus just doesn't require him to come to striking class? I can't imagine a guy that's been fighting pro for 10+ years consistently works on his striking with a very high-level coach like Roufus and still looks that inept. His wrestling was very good as expected - it's extremely difficult to take a guy like Maia down 3-4 times like Askren did. Askren's BJJ looked good - he rode over Maia's hips on top and swept him once in the 2nd round. But dude can't tell me he's ever even tried to commit to a striking program.

I was watching Askren last night and I just found myself asking "Is this man even UFC material?" I mean, he's really bad.
