In watching recording, just got to that point and all the excitement.
Let me make a few comments
#1 Joe Buck is an idiot and don’t listen to anything he says (slight exaggeration)
#2 Smoltz said the key words “we are coached to throw at the runner” in that situation
#3 Fox should have put up the rule for viewers
#4 Martinez said he knew he couldn’t protest a judgement call but had them go look at the play and rule so that is part of the 5 minute delay
#5 The part of the rule applicable is “umpires judgement” and “interferes with the fielder taking the throw”
I umpired and I always dreaded a play like this but by the letter of the rule it is the runners responsibility...has nothing to do with “running a straight line” like idiot Joe Buck kept saying (and other talking heads on ESPN)
So, is the rule subject to controversy, absolutely because the word “judgment” is there
Did the runner interfere with the fielder taking the throw, absolutely
The right call was made and fortunately all the “extra” didn’t prevent Nats from win.
We got a game 7 and I have Nats + 600!!
Lets have a great game!
Now back to last two innings of recording
