It was the 80's, offshore wasn't much of an option.

Vegas was the only legal US option, or a local.

If he bet on NFL instead he'd probably be in the HOF, decades ago.

How did he get caught ?

He didn’t his bookie or runner got busted for something and they had his name on paper

Betting NFL is why he started betting bases. He had lost so much betting football and basketball, he felt this was his only option to recover. He never bet against the Reds, and bet every game Mario Soto pitched. He was basically ratted out because he told his runner, he wasn’t giving the bookie anymore money..

Essentially he was an idiot and gambled on baseball of all things when it was clearly prohibited, rule 21, 1919 Black Sox, yada, yada, yada !

It's pretty clear that if you're involved in sports as a player, manager, coach, umpire, referee owner, or anything similar, don't bet on any sports, especially the one you're associated with, it can only look bad in the end.
