have to chime in here, johnnie. in my opinion devil his due was among the most overrated handicap horses of his generous. he shipped out for the pacific classic in either '93 or '94, and i will never forget the exchange between andy beyer and bob neumeyer. neumeyer picked devil his due to win and andy beyer responded, "bob, i don't like stealing candy from a baby, but devil his due has absolutely no chance against this field and i'd just be taking your money." andy picked best pal, who lost to free running bertrando in stakes record time, but those two were well, well clear of everyone else, including devil his due. i made a huge score on that race, and never thought the devil was nearly as good as he looked beating up on the mediocre east coast handicap division that year- although kudos to the devil for biting an irs agent who oversaw the bankruptcy/dispersal of lion crest stables.
as for the derby, my favorite, was silver charm, grinding his way past free house and holding off the finishers for scary gary stevens and baffert. that horse was rarely brilliant, but tough, tough as nails.

The 1992 Derby saw a lot of horses including Lil E. Tee w/ Pat Day at much higher odds than you would expect. This was because of the much over-hyped favorite Arazi that year. I believe Arazi went off at even money or less and at that time was one of the most bet on horses in the history of the Derby.

and not just the derby but all three races especially the ridiculous performance at the belmont not even another horse in sight, just an unbelievable animal...
