Race 8: The Pimlico Distaff

#3 Smok'n Frolic
I'm hoping Pletcher ships Smok'n Frolic here. His other option is The Shuvee, Saturday at Belmont. Should be 3rd choice in the wagering in this spot, behind the two classy ladies, Summer Colony and Mandy's Gold. Colony is listed as the chalk, but the race looks a bit short for her and although her win % is a huge 9 for 19, she's 0 for 3 over the wet going. Mandy's Gold could be tough, as she ran a respectable 3rd at huge odds against Azeri in The Apple Blossom. Still, she's mustered no better than 3rd in her last 4 Graded Stakes, and she doesn't appear to be the horse she was last year. Looks like a good spot for Smok'n Frolic. Let's hope she goes.

Race 11: The Pimlico Special

#7 Hero's Tribute

If the track comes up wet, and at this point it appears that will be the case, Hero's Tribute will be the play at a nice price. Horse loves the slop and fires every time regardless. He's done little wrong in his last 9 tries and appears to be peaking. Ward is good period, but he excels with layoff types (14 for 50). Prado should work out a beautiful trip, just off the leaders, which should be Western Pride and Balto Star. Mineshaft has the figures and a pedigree to handle the distance as well as the slop, but he'll be overbet. He ran a career best Beyer off the shelf, matching his top 3yo figure. I'd be surprised if he doesn't regress a bit. Looking for Hero's Tribute to splash home in front of that one.

Best of luck to all this weekend..
