Oklahoma Coach - Count Sooner coach Lincoln Riley among the college football principals
who believe it's irresponsible for players to return to campus June 1. Riley is in the out-
spoken minority on getting college football players together. Across the state, Oklahoma
State coach Mike Gundy said he wanted players back May 1. "We're not the NFL," Riley said.
There are some huge differences in us being able to put on a successful season versus a
professional league. We're not the NBA. We don't just have fifteen players. This is totally
different deal." Someone needs to tell Mr. Riley that there is no requirement for Big-12 teams
to bring players together in June. The college football season is scheduled to begin the last
week of August. Most teams are scheduled to start fall practice the first week of August.

No Season, Huge Losses - The cost of canceling college football in 2020 could exceed $4 billion
and elimination of other non-revenue sports across the NCAA. Most experts believe a massive
fallout would take place if there is no college football season or if the football season is interrupted
or shortened. Each Power 5 school would see at least an average loss of $62 million in football
revenue, including at least $18.6 million in football ticket sales. Anywhere from 75 to 85 percent
of all revenues to athletic departments are derived directly or indirectly from football. You can bet
schools are going to do everything possible to play this season. Let the games begin.

Two college football fans are sitting in the stadium opening week with an empty
    seat between them.
The first fan, noticing the empty seat, turns to the second fan and asks, "Who
on earth would want to miss the opening game?"
The second fan replies. "That seat belonged to my late wife. We were season
    ticket holders."
"How sad," the first fan said. "Can't you give the ticket to another family member
    or friend?"
"Can't," The other fan says. "They're all at the funeral."

I got the impression the players werenít informed he planned on tanking season. I donít see why players he didnít recruit would be ok with it. He is not someone I would want as head coach at my school.

Miami Northwestern High School - State champion coach Max Edwards has been suspended
indefinitely while the school's administration undergoes an investigation into alleged football
training during the coronavirus pandemic. The Greater Miami Athletic Conference suspended
athletic events on March 13 when the county closed schools. The Florida High School Asso.
took a step further on March 18, nine days before spring football practices were set to begin,
when it put a stop to all high school athletic events in the state. Edwards, who took over as
the Northwestern head football coach before the 2015 season, has led the Bulls to a 51-16
record over the past five seasons. Northwestern has won state championships each of the past
three seasons, doing so in Class 6A for the 2017 and 2018 seasons and in Class 5A in 2019.
I'm willing to bet Edwards is not the only coach in Florida supporting football training at their
schools. I'd double that bet here in Alabama....triple it at some of the powerhouse high schools.

Oklahoma State - Many of the talking heads seem to be high on the Cowboys this season.
The offense (9 starters return) is expected to be one of the best in the nation. Running
back Chuba Hubbard should make a run at the Heisman after rushing for 2,094 yards and
21 touchdowns last year. If he gets there he can take Oklahoma State to some nice heights
too. They just need sophomore Spencer Sanders, there relatively inexperienced quarter-
back to be sharp at the controls and stay healthy for them. The defense returns 12 of the
top 13 tacklers from 2019 where they ranked seventh in the Big 12 in total defense. Most
expect an overall production upgrade from the unit this year. The schedule includes likely
home wins over Oregon State, Tulsa and Western Illinois to kick things off before getting a
week off. The Cowboys get Texas and Iowa State at home, and while there's a road game
against a weaker Baylor team, the real test will be the trip over to Norman to deal with the
Sooners where they are 2-15 the last 17 games against their instate rival.

Sidenote: Going back to 2010, Oklahoma State is 16-1 straight up when picking off three
or more passes in a game.

Purdue - As one of the "lesser" programs in the Big Ten in terms of prestige and program
history, a school like Purdue has a tough time competing at a high level on a yearly basis.
The sad reality for Purdue football fans is the fact the Boilermakers haven't performed any-
where near a high level for years now and 2019 was no different. The 2019 season ended
with a 4-8 record for Purdue, as Jeff Brohm's tenure there is starting to look and feel like
its lost its path. That's two straight years in his three-year span as the head coach that
wins have decreased and if that continues in 2020, Brohm and his big contract will start
    hearing the howls.

Sidenote: Purdue is 14-0 against the spread as a road dog of 11 or more points. (3-0
    last year)

I wouldn't say Brohm is losing his way. 2019 was a rebuilding year at best and then the injury bug hit hard. Starting QB Sindelar played in just 4 games, missed TCU with concussion, and then broke his collarbone and missed the final 7 games.
Backup RS Fr Plummer Started five games, missed final three with broken ankle.
Nick Sipe was #3 QB but retired before season with back injury.
Walk-on O'Connell started last three games.

Most of all, All-American WR-punt-kickoff returner Rondall Moore lasted only 3.5 games before a serious hamstring injury took him out rest of year. That killed them.

This year Plummer should be the starting QB with O'Connell as backup, not much depth there! Moore has to stay healthy, he is the x-factor on offensive. Bob Diaco is new DC should see some improvement there.
Twelve players entered the transfer portal, none of those will start at a Div1 school, most from defensive side.
As most schools pad their non-con schedules with sacrificial lambs, Purdue has Memphis, Boston College, and Air Force. They do play Rutgers so that helps.

^ Third year coaches should be improving...not going backwards.

Southeastern Conference - The SEC announced it will allow student athletes to return
to campus for "voluntary in-person athletics activities" supervised by strength/conditioning
personnel beginning June 8. Each school will develop its own safety guidelines and protocols
including social distancing in accordance with state and local health directives. The league
had previously suspended all athletic activities through May 31 due to the virus.

Big Ten - The league has canceled 2020 football media days and kickoff luncheon scheduled
for July 22-23 in Chicago. The Big 10 has not determined if they will go virtual or simply
reschedule the event to a later date.

Manning Passing Academy - The annual passing academy in Thibodaux, Louisiana, has been
canceled due to the coronavirus, it was announced yesterday. The Manning Academy, which
features some of the top college and high school quarterbacks in the country undergoing
hands-on instruction from Archie, Payton and Eli Manning. Current state policies in Louisiana
do not allow for sleepover camps, and the city of Thibodeaux has canceled all recreational
camps through the summer. Archie announced the camp would return in 2021.

Auburn - Caylin Newton, the younger brother of former Auburn Heisman Trophy winner Cam
Newton, is transferring to Auburn. The Tigers are already at the 85-player scholarship limit
for the upcoming season, so Newton, who entered the transfer portal in October will be a pre-
ferred walk-on for the Tigers. He will be immediately eligible as a graduate transfer from Howard
University. He played quarterback at Howard but will likely play (if he plays at all) wide receiver
at Auburn. He ain't SEC material as a quarterback.

UAB - The Blazers have scheduled two games against two high profile SEC opponents. UAB will
play LSU November 19, 2022 and Georgia September 23, 2023. The Blazers have two wins over
SEC teams. They beat Nick Saban and LSU in 2000 and Mississippi State in 2004. Still bothers
me that Alabama refuses to play UAB and help an in-state school with a good payday. Maybe
Saban remembers the loss to UAB when he was at LSU. Auburn has played UAB but Alabama
won't schedule a team that would create more interest for fans than Georgia State. Don't under-
    stand it.

Remembering the past - A year after Peyton Manning's college career ended, Tennessee
was not considered a serious national title contender. But when quarterback Tee Martin
and the Vols knocked off Florida in overtime (20-17), the frenzy at Neyland Stadium was
just the start of something big. The Vols got a gift of a victory at Arkansas and they used
a fourth-quarter rally to get past Mississippi State in the SEC title game...and finally, out-
lasted Florida State 23-16 in the Fiesta Bowl to go 13-0 and win the 1998 national title.

Memphis - The Tigers are coming off one of the best seasons in school history (12-2) and
expect another good one this year, especially with the return of an experienced offense.
Quarterback Brady White returns after passing for 4,014 yards and 33 touchdowns during
2019. He will be joined by all-purpose running back Kenny Gainwell who accounted for
2,069 yards and wide receiver Damonte Coxie who has 2,450 yards receiving the past two
seasons. Add in an offensive line with 43 starts and you have an offense with plenty of
scoring power. Defense is the question here, and though eight starters return, this was a
unit that was a bit hit or miss in 2019. The Tigers gave up 26.4 points per game and
was rated No. 61 in total defense last year. With 73% of the players returning in 2020,
Memphis should be a player again in the AAC conference.

    Arkansas State.....@Purdue.....Houston.....@UTSA.....@SMU.....Open.....Central Florida
    …..Temple.....@Cincinnatti.....South Florida.....@Navy.....UTMartin.....@Tulane

Sidenote: Memphis is 16-9-2 (64%) against the spread in conference games the past three
    seasons.

    1) They have a brand new head coach this season
    2) That Temple game is a crazy sandwich game as they have UCF the week before and Cincy the week after (2 of the best teams in the conference). If we could catch Temple getting double digits, that could be a GREAT play

^ New coach Ryan Silverfield has been with Memphis for several years so one would think he
has a good understanding of the program and the players he's now in charge off. Smooth transition
with what's going on...just don't know. It's a big jump from being an assistant coach to running the
entire show so only time will tell with Silverfield. As the offensive line coach last year, he also carried
the title of assistant head coach for whatever that's worth. He's got some horses to work with so let's
see how he does. My guess is another AAC West title.

Georgia - Just when you think the Bulldogs have their starting quarterback for the 2020
season, they go out and bring in another high-profile transfer to compete for the starting
job. Former starting Southern Cal quarterback JT Daniels has announced he is transferring
to Georgia. Daniels started for USC in 2018, but lost his job to Kedon Slovis after going down
last season with a knee injury. Daniels, who entered the transfer portal in April, will battle
for playing time with graduate transfer Jamie Newman, who left Wake Forest to play his final
season with Georgia. The Bulldogs now have two quarterbacks with significant college ex-
perience. Smart has also recruited two high-profile high school quarterbacks during the past
two recruiting cycles. Fall practice is going to be interesting down in Athens this season.

Sidenote: Georgia's Kirby Smart is 33-20 against the spread during his four years as head
coach of the Bulldogs, including 22-14 ATS in SEC league games.

Michigan - Last year, the Wolverines entered the season with a fresh, green backfield
as Zack Charbonnet (726 yds, 11 tds) and Hassan Haskins (622 yds, 4 tds) emerged
as the top two ball carriers. Neither player had a single carry entering the season, but
Harbaugh prepared them for the rigors of the Big Ten schedule. Chris Evans will also
return (423 yds, 4 tds) after missing 2019. Last season, Michigan was sorely lacking
in experience at the running back position, but now has the luxury of choosing between
three players that have logged considerable time in the Big Ten. What was a weakness
a year ago has become a strength for this years offense.

Sidenote: Michigan will be breaking in a new starting quarterback. Candidates Dylan
McCaffrey and Joe Milton have thrown a combined 46 passes during their college careers.

Nebraska - The Cornhuskers have been hemorrhaging rushing yards as a defense for
years. There was improvement early in 2019, it seemed, and then total collapse, and
winning the Big Ten (especially the West) means stopping the run. A big part of fixing
that will have to be generating some negative plays on the ground early on in the chains.
Nebraska has ranked 75th, 119th and 130th in the last three seasons in 'stuff' rate.
Making matters worst, the defense will be replacing the entire starting defensive line.
Nebraska was 102nd nationally giving up 4.8 yards per play including 13th in the Big Ten.
The rushing defense has to improve or the offense better be capable of scoring forty
points a game on every team it faces.

Sidenote: 2019 marked the first time since 1962 that no player from Nebraska was
    selected in the NFL draft.

Tulane - There are few teams that bring less players back in 2020 than the Green
Wave. They return only 44 percent of production from last year's 7-6 team, which
is 122nd in the FBS. Refilling a lot of that talent on the fly will be difficult despite
the uptick in recruiting. It's a tough schedule for Tulane in 2020, that will probably
keep the Wave from a third straight bowl appearance. But with the success Willie
Fritz has had so far with overachieving teams, it's hard to count Tulane out of the
postseason picture. A five win season is more likely for Fritz and boys this season.

Sidenote: Willie Fritz is coming off a 9-4 against the spread season bringing his
total at Tulane to a winning 26-20-1 ATS total.

    Preseason No. 1

It should be known that AP preseason number one ranked teams are, for the most part
highly successful. These teams have gone 442-71-1 straight up in all games since 1980.

During the past four seasons, these No. 1 teams have gone 55-4 straight up.

Clemson's number one WR, Justyn Ross out for season.

Has to have surgery on his spine. Says it's a congenital issue. He was considered to be a top receiver this year. Big loss for them.
