I was pulling in 32-40k from 2000-2005 after making a dramatic career change. then I jumped considerably from 2005 until mid-2007 leading a team for a large company. I went out on my own mid-2007 which, in my profession, was a terrible decision because the market tanked a year later. I made 10k in 2008 but put away enough from 2005-2007 that I was able to keep my business afloat, barely, until things got cooking in late 2009 and into 2010.
since then I've built a very successful business but one that is certainly tied to the economy so I just saw about 80% of my business fall off last week. But I've done extremely well and nothing has ever been handed to me. I start every year with $0 and eat what I kill...nobody pays me a salary, nobody pays my benefits, i'm 100% commission.
I bet on myself because I hate having a boss and i'm really fn good at what I do. that doesn't mean I will see another dollar of income this year and, if this shutdown continues, I will be laying off my entire team in April.

Self made is going out on your own, taking the gamble, and becoming successful in business. No boss, long hours, no guaranteed paychecks.
