And many major retailers tell landlords they can’t pay April rent due to coronavirus

Cheesecake is a 30 min wait in a slow night. Funny how can’t pay rent after two weeks

And doesn’t the Cheesecake CEO make 6 mil a year?

Cheesecake knows the REITs that own the malls that they are mostly outside of (atleast in the NE) aren't going to evict them because you're looking at a multi-year vacancy. No honor among thieves, US known as the West but not too long ago it was the wild, wild West for a reason...

So after all this is over we can go eat there and claim because we are unemployed because of the Coronavirus I will not be paying for my meal this night? But once employed I will start paying again for it

I’m gonna try it , Lol

Malls are charging full rent and are closed to the public. This is a negotiating ploy. They pay large rent because of the traffic the malls are supposed to bring. The restaurants are creating their own traffic now. The corporate landlord will put their tenants out of business and then their malls will be empty. I already am seeing these situations and I would advise my clients not to pay rent. Everyone is going to have to take a haircut for the good of society as there are government ordered shutdowns.

Yeah, Cheesecake not the first. I read last week about a couple big name companies saying as much. Forget which ones. They have a case. They are renting space zoned for commercial use. If commercial use is being allowed on that property, whether it's local zoning issues, a state directive or national not allowing that property to be used for commercial use why should rent be paid. Even though it not the landlords fault , that property is no longer allowed to conduct business.

The landlords should pass it along to the government on the property tax side. If a government can shut down a private business they should have the expense of tax credits for lost revenue
