US jobless claims smash through record as lay-offs accelerate
More than 6.6m first-time claims filed as coronavirus-related losses hit 10m in two weeks

April 2 2020

The number of Americans filing for first-time unemployment benefits doubled to more than 6m, hitting a record high for a second consecutive week as lay-offs stemming from the coronavirus shutdown accelerated and spread into new industries.

Initial jobless claims jumped to 6.65m in the week ending March 28, the labour department said on Thursday. That eclipsed economists' forecasts for a rise to 3.7m.

The figure more than doubles last week’s total of 3.31m claims, the previous record high. The new data published on Thursday takes the two-week total to 10m job losses.

As states and cities shut down non-essential businesses, retailers and restaurants facing a collapse in revenue laid off employees across the country.

States reported that shutdowns continued to primarily affect the service sector, but the pain has spread to the healthcare and social assistance, manufacturing, wholesale trade and construction industries as well.

...market way already factored this number. unless it's really silly (as I think it could be), won't be a "big deal"

If it's over the 6.6 million, I'm going to be very concerned.

My job depends on the economy cranking along.

There will be well over 25MM by May...whether accurately reported or not.
All the lefties love of the lockdown will change in 6 mths when our consumption based economy is not consuming.
They will want more fed/treasury $. And if they cave...like they very may...well, be long hard assets of any kind.

Another 5 million people filed jobless claims last week, bringing total to almost 22 million in one month

Around 5 million more people filed for first-time unemployment claims last week, as the job market in every sector of the economy continues to be devastated by the coronavirus pandemic.

The staggering weekly number comes as President Donald Trump weighs plans to pull back on the social distancing measures that have shuttered businesses across the country, and reopen parts of the economy as soon as May 1.

State-mandated lockdowns have choked vast portions of the once-booming economy, kicking a total of 22 million people out of work and launching the nation into the worst crisis since the Great Depression.

Jobless claims jump another 4.4 million — 26 million Americans have lost their jobs to the coronavirus

Published: April 23, 2020 at 12:32 p.m. ET

U.S. unemployment rate has probably topped 15%

The numbers: The record surge of Americans applying for unemployment benefits is starting to recede, but another 4.4 million people filed new jobless claims last week to push the total above 26 million since the coronavirus pandemic laid siege to the U.S. economy a month and a half ago.

The spike in unemployment has likely pushed the jobless rate to between 15% and 20%, economists estimate. The only other time in American history when unemployment was that high was in the early stages of the Great Depression almost a century ago.

In less than two months, the pandemic has eliminated all the 23 million jobs created after the 2007-2009 Great Recession.
