"Trudeau also sounded a warning to the provinces that are planning to reopen their economies — and to the companies eyeing a resumption of operations.

“One of the criteria for starting to reopen certain industries is certainly going to be to ensure that there is enough personal protective equipment to be able to do the job safely,” he said.

Trudeau said he is well aware the demand for masks, protective gowns and other types of equipment will “continue to increase across the country.”

“This is why, at the level of Canadian production and at the level of imports from abroad, we are increasing our capacities significantly,” he said.

Trudeau declined to say whether Canada has enough equipment at the moment to allow the economy to reopen in the coming weeks.

Saskatchewan and New Brunswick are the first two provinces to have presented their plans to resume economic activity. Ontario and Quebec are expected to follow in the coming days.
