Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Blake Snell said during a Twitch stream yesterday that the health risks of returning to play this season is “just not worth it” if he’s going to make significantly less than his contracted salary.

Here’s Snell, whose full comments can be seen in the video below:
“Bro, I’m risking my life . . . What do you mean it should not be a thing? It should 100% be a thing. If I’m gonna play, I should be getting the money I signed to be getting paid. I should not be getting half of what I’m getting paid because the season’s cut in half, on top of a 33% cut of the half that’s already there — so I’m really getting, like, 25%.

“Y’all gotta understand, man, for me to go, for me to take a pay cut is not happening, because the risk is through the roof, it’s a shorter season, less pay . . . I gotta get my money. I’m not playing unless I get mine, okay? And that’s just the way it is for me. Like, I’m sorry you guys think differently, but the risk is way the hell higher and the amount of money I’m making is way lower, why would I think about doing that? Like you know, I’m just, I’m sorry.”

Snell later sent a text message to the Tampa Bay Times and said that he realizes his comments came off as greedy, but that “I mean, honestly, it’s just scary to risk my life to get COVID-19 as well as not knowing and spreading it to others . . . . I just want everyone to be healthy and get back to our normal lives ’cause I know I miss mine!” He added, “I’m just saying, it doesn’t make sense for me to lose all of that money and then go play. And then be on lockdown, not around my family, not around the people I love, and getting paid way the hell less — and then the risk of injury runs every time I step on the field.”

F*ck this clown. He's gotta be making $10M - $20M easy as an established starter.

Oh, he doesn't want to work for one - fourth or perhaps one - half that sum?

The guy MIGHT have to pitch 80 innings this year. Assuming he doesn't come down
with some kind of arm soreness, that's usually good for missing a couple starts.

They should boycott this schmuck once he hits free agency. ^^:)

Had the displeasure of listening to this interview today, what a piece of garbage.
"Can you imagine me pitching for this kind of money", as if we would all identify with his plight.
My first time ever hearing this guy talk, I am not a fan.

how fu-king spoiled is this pos? they are getting paid huge sums to play games that we played for nothing as kids and dreamed of making it to the show? he cannot be serious about the "risking his life comment." what about those of us who truly risked our lives in jungles for our country? take him to a VA hospital and let him see our vets who are just happy to be alive. i am truly considering driving to tampa when the season opens just to spit in his face.

did he really say he runs the risk of injury everytime he steps on the field? hmmm, in a half season be looking at about a dozen starts, maybe 14 max?

signed a $50m contract and with 35m new people out of work he refuses to go back to work for a dozen days.... insert chuckle here

His 2020 contract is for 7.6m

He chills this year and his 2021-3 conracts are 11m, 13m and 16m

So he can get paid $3.8m for half sized 2020 + $40m or just chill and still get paid $40m

He chills this year and his 2021-3 conracts are 11m, 13m and 16m

So he can get paid $1.9- $3.8m for half sized 2020 + $40m or just chill and still get paid $40m

IOW, he can risk COVID for about 10% difference 2020-23

The only time I think of baseball is when stories like this come up. A dying sport where there is no one worthy of respect.

Before we blame the democrats for YET another thing due to the ignorance on this website, rumor has it that at the last minute, the owners screwed over the players ONCE an agreement was made.

The owners thought of an additional deal which will pay the players less and yet increase the value of their franchises.

The media wont tell you this as the many media members are employed by MLB.

Yet when it comes to sports, then you fools have NO PROBLEMS listening to the media
