Proposed NFL onside kick change would see teams try 4th-and-15 play instead

There is growing support around the NFL to introduce an alternative to the onside kick, according to Pro Football Talk.

A proposal suggests that teams should be allowed to try a 4th-and-15 play in lieu of an onside kick. Following rule changes last season that prevented players on the kicking team from taking a running start, the onside kick’s effectiveness was limited and dwindled teams’ chances of coming from behind late in games.

According to PFT, the Philadelphia Eagles proposed the change. NFL owners are expected to vote on the proposed change later this month.

Lining up from their own 25-yard line, teams would retain possession if they were able to convert for a first down. If they fail to convert, the opposing team would be able to take from the location of the dead ball. The options would be available to teams twice in a game, while the traditional onside kick would still remain an option.

If its twice per game I suppose it would be tried mostly late 4 quarter...when a team is significantly behind. No use attempting in first half

Probably see more late covers

NFL is a joke. The onside kick was attempted so infrequently in the past that there was no need to change the rules. Did they really think it was a major cause of injuries and concussions in the league.

The Back Umpire already has his hands on the flag he will toss for defensive holding and automatic first down

They’re not proposing to do away with it. It’s just that new kickoff rules have made it basically impossible so they’re proposing a new alternative.
Still dumb imo

I would make it 4th and 20.
The odds on 4th and 15 are too high.
You want to replicate the % of successful OS kicks before the new rules .
4th and 15 would go way over that %

And there is a loophole I see for doing this in the first half with 5 secs or less left.
Lets say the team on D committed a unsportsmanlike conduct foul and the kicking team is kicking off from midfield .

Will that void the team from having to do the onside kick from the 25?

This is Stupid!

Your score you have to kick -off ; Period why are we changing the rules of the game

If your are behind at the end of the game ;then come up with a better coaching scheme during the game ; Hell this is competition of attrition
best team wins ........

Just like OT you lose the coin toss PLAY GOOD DEFENSE get the ball back and score !!! Team sport best team in all facets of the game should win!!!

Not the best offense --they way they keep slanting the rules is changing the game..........STOP

I agree with all the complaints about stupid rules changes

On the kickoff plays it shouldnt be an automatic first down.

Maybe a five yard penalty and do it again

Stupid proposal. ##)

What the NFL needs to do is bring back the running start for onside kicks only. A team must declare before the kickoff that they are going for an onside kick, and then they would be allowed to have a running start like they used to be able to do. This would increase the recovery percentage for end of game scenarios. :)!/

No trick plays and kicking it deep either. If a team declares an onside kick, they must follow through or face a penalty.

I think they should take it one step further and bring back the ten man wall of players on one side of the field, instead of five players on each side. But, at the very least they need to bring back the running start for onside kicks.

There is nothing they can really do for surprise onside kicks, however. The standing start reduced concussions on kickoffs by 35%. It is here to stay.

According to Football Outsiders 12.5% of 4th and 15 were converted to first downs. If you convert the first down you have about a 98% chance of winning if down by less than 3. With the more recent rule change the onside kick recovery is like 6%. Would make things more exciting and add back some anticipation + some that we lost with the last onside rule change. I could see some teams with superior qb play try and exploit this.

If this is made a rule, the officials should be made to look the other way on PI the way they do on hail Mary's.
