Okay, fine, the NFL looks solid. The UFC is up 'n running. The NBA is
about to announce its resumption plan.

STILL a lot of dumbass doomsayers prematurely announcing the death
of college football. How stupid. Universities will open up to in-person
classes and football will be played.

But what is driving ME nuts is Major League Baseball. WHY have they
not finalized their 2020 season starting date? It's bad enough they have
essentially agreed to an 82-game season (what a joke), but they STILL
cannot stop kissing their players' butts. I believe they should play a
MINIMUM of 100 games by extending the season and playing the
World Series at Dodger Stadium, but they'd rather argue about
revenue sharing, etc.

I hate both sides of this "dispute" equally. I just want to watch baseball
unfortunately.

Just declare a start date and invite all players who want to be part of
the expanded roster, and say "see ya next year" to any player that
doesn't. Then, let the labor lawyers sort it out.

The MLBPA is arguably the most powerful labor union in North America

It appears a majority of their members - notably pitchers - are disinterested in doing the work needed to cobble together a farce "season" of 82 games in highly controlled venues playing an average of just six to eight opposing teams.

Any "championship" earned is no more notable than having the best record in a March spring training schedule

We suggest making peace with no MLB until February 2021

I'd disagree, but it's really just an individual preference whether a half-season is
legitimate or not. But I saw yesterday that the MLB owners are floating a proposal
that pays lower-paid younger guys ($1-$3M, $3-$6M, etc.) a higher percentage of
their pro-rated full season salaries than the $20-$30M superstars would get!

It's an interesting and devisive strategy, and tests those superstars' claim that
they "would play or nothing", etc.

It's practically an offer to do so, since the proposal would pay those mega-money
stars FAR less than half their normal pay. It should be interesting if the Trouts
and Coles will go for it!

They will not agree or even give consideration to the latest proposal by the Owners. In fact, I think they will ignore it entirely. Although it this is an extremely unique set of circumstances in history and everything happening is very fluid they had an agreement back in March. The updated proposal offered was ridiculous. I do not root for one side or the other but the players are the easy target because we know them. If baseball does not figure this out the repercussions for the sport will be brutal.

I agree. They can't just scrap the season and expect baseball to thrive in the long run. I'll still watch of course but MLB will lose any and all momentum they had last year with the average fan.

I am afraid you may both be right. The team owners will either back down from their
"revised" proposal or at least scale it back, hopefully to what they agreed to in late March.

Otherwise, the lost season will be entirely their fault, and the repercussions will be felt
for years. This could be a several BILLION dollar mistake they're fooling around with....

I know I'd be one of MANY thousands of fans who'd never buy another ticket. But, that's
ALSO because I have to watch the Tigers. Ugh.

For those who care, long article at ESPN today about longer-term ramifications that are referred to above. I think of baseball kind of like I thought about the rocket launch yesterday. Full of nostalgia and remembrances of the good old days in trying to get to the moon, but today excitement only among a invested niche of followers. MLB is really in the same position as, while there is great anticipation and discussion of football coming back, baseball is merely a potential bridge to kickoff. Players and owners still operate as if it is still the national pastime when, in fact, most people only remember its absence when someone brings up the ongoing idiocy of those two groups. I will miss the LL WS and College WS and have sympathy for the minor league towns.

Another week passed. It's getting to a compromise -- or a cancelled season --
within a couple weeks now I guess.

I feel nothing but anger at both players & owners. But the owners are trying
some BS and the players have no choice but to say "f*ck that."

Play a 90-100 game season and finish at Dodger Stadium. Start on July 1 and
expand the playoffs to 12 - 14 teams.

This could still be done if these knuckleheads want to. :discuss:

GuessI cannot say I am surprised that baseball has found a way to take the focus off of a World-Wide Pandemic and make it about them quibbling over money. I am not going to get into the pros and cons of where each side stands as they have made it complicated and quite frankly it is simply tiresome. I love baseball, for many reasons, however understand why it is a suffering sport.

It looks like neither side really cares. If neither can maximize their 2020 income they seemingly would rather everyone make nothing and have no baseball. To hear that the leading proposal now is to have a 48 game season is preposterous to me. If they are unable to even play one third of the season, why bother at all? This would be like the NFL opting for a 5 game season, NCAA football 4 games. the NBA and NHL 24 game seasons. Insane.

MLB really is unable to go more than a decade without shooting itself in the foot. It is sad, especially when so many are struggling during these extremely difficult times.
