Should the $600 Federal Unemployment Benefit be extended?

The additional $600 Federal Unemployment Benefit is set to expire at the end of July with possible shutdowns looming on the horizon. The biggest arguments made for and against this seem to be: 1) It disincentivizes people to work as many are actually making more by not working, and 2) Where to find employment if your local jurisdiction goes into complete shutdown mode (it's not like people can just reinvent themselves that quickly and go into a completely different career).

no way this poorly thought out plan should be extended. how can we reward people for not going to work and especially when it will be paid for by people who do go to work ?

No - too many deadbeats taking advantage...can't get most of the assholes to come back to work and even when you take them off the payroll...they continue to receive the benefits

How much money has our government spent on this, 6 trillion, more? And we are worrying about $600 given to the lower end of the earners in this country? Come on!

So what do you do if areas go into shutdown and people are unable to go to work as per a government mandate? Should they just find a job to work out of their house? And how do they re-invent themselves that quickly?

You simply extend the $600. Which i thought they had done already, but perhaps i am wrong.

that is a great question and one that nobody has been able to answer logically and creatively. here is one very loose and not completely developed thought: i am totally against government involvement in the private sector but what if the government was to create and fund very simple industries to create jobs for these people where they can work at home or in very safe evironments. i am not smart enough to know how to accomplish this but, at least, i know that there are options out there if people would think creatively and openly.

No, being on the front lines I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt this program is being abused.

All the bailout programs have been. For individuals and businesses. I don't mind the SBA EIDL assistance for small businesses, those are loans at favorable terms that can benefit both parties. But the free money to people and businesses that haven't been hurt by the pandemic should stop.

There are a lot of businesses and people hurt by these closures, but not everyone.

I also know it's hard for the government to draw the line. The costs of compliance may outweigh the benefits

Still, I'd suggest some sort of favorable loans for impacted people. No more across the board handouts

Give the unemployed workers what they were making already. Most of the workforce are $12 - $18 per hour employees and were not bringing home $930 per week. They were bringing home $350 - $500 per week. You cannot pay them double what they were making

That seems fair enough. So continue on with unemployment and get rid of the $600 benefit. So do you omit the requirement for looking for a job as many of the states have done for the time being, since there would be so few employers able to hire?

Same as the people that bitched about the Affordable Care Act, but then didn't want it taken away from them.

It definitely should not be extended, for reasons Willie and others have already provided

I have section 8 living next to me and they are getting combined $2500 per month and probably more with the 7 people living there. Rent alone is over $1300
