I have become a hockey bettor over the last couple of years with decent results. I might as well track my picks. All plays will be 1-5 units and my record will be updated daily. Unlike the MLB, I feel good about the NHL avoiding Covid-19 issues and having a smooth postseason. Good luck to everyone going forward.

August 3rd

Oilers/Blackhawks 1P over 1.5 goals (-140), 1 unit

Just got my power back this morning after having it out for the last 3 days. I might have one more play later. Good luck.

Blue Jackets ML (+140), 3 units- I don't trust Toronto at all. Over the years, they have found different ways to lose first round playoff series and individual games. They blew a 3 goal lead in Game 5 and then erased a 3 goal deficit in Game 6. Talk about Jekyll and Hyde. I certainly cannot back them at -170 on the money line. They have lost in the first round of the playoffs the last 3 seasons including losing in Game 7 the last two seasons. Until this core shows an ability to win a playoff round or beat a team who is equal to or better then them, I have to continue to fade them. The Blue Jackets beat Tampa in the first round last year and has gone toe to toe with Toronto to this point. Columbus doesn't have the talent of either of those teams, but they continue to grind it out with their physical style. I will grab the +140 and hope Toronto stays true to form. GL.

NHL Series

Islanders to Win Series (+125), 2 units- I think the Islanders have a very good chance to win this series. I like their team with the additions of Pageau and Green at the deadline. They have Barry Trotz at the helm coaching against his old team. I can see some motivation from him as well as his players wanting to beat the Caps. The Caps have two defensemen that are banged up including Carlson. Carlson is going to play but he is not 100 percent. I'm taking the young legs of the Islanders to get the job done.

Bruins to Win Series (-160), 1 unit- Everyone is off the Bruins train after losing all three of their round robin games and not looking great on offense or defense. I am going to believe in them. I liked them all year and I'm not willing to back off now. Their coach and players said they were going to treat these 3 round robin games as warmups and they would be ready to go when the playoffs start. I will take them at their word in their series. I respect Carolina's top two lines and they looked great against the Rangers. But this is a big step up in class. The Bruins swept them last year and while I don't see a sweep, I like the Bruins to advance.

Blue Jackets ML (+140), 2 units- I’m going to take a stab with the Jackets in Game 1. They are in full playoff mode after defeating Toronto in the play in round. I think it might take Tampa a game to get warmed up. Stamkos and Hedman are banged up for Tampa. Meanwhile Columbus should have confidence from beating Tampa last year and Korpisalo is playing very well in net. They might not win the series but I think there is value at +140.

Bruins ML -135, 2 units

As you said, once a game gets into 3, 4, 5 overtime’s it is a total coin flip. I was on the wrong side of the flip, but I don’t regret the play. I have the Bruins this morning and will have other plays later in the day. GL everyone.

Nice to have an overtime game go my way this time. Especially since I have the Bruins in the series. I’m leaving the Caps game alone. While I like the Islanders to pull the upset, I want to see a game played before I place a wager.

Flyers/Canadiens under 5.5 (-140), 2 units- I don't love laying this much juice but it seems like the right play. Third game of the day on that ice will lend itself to a slower style of play. Tougher to make long clean passes, pucks bouncing around, etc. Also, Claude Julien has always preached defense first and defensive integrity during his tenure with the Bruins and Canadiens. This should be a tough physical game with two strong goaltenders keeping the score low.

Good start for the Islanders in that series. Always nice to win the first one whether there is a home ice advantage or not. Arizona has gotten outplayed or at least outshot heavily through two periods but they have been able to keep Colorado off the scoreboard. Lets see if they can steal one here.

Teams that win Game 1 are 478-219 (68.6 percent) winning a best-of-7 NHL playoff series.

Canucks ML (+130), 2 units- Maybe I'm off base here, but I have my reservations about the Blues. Last year they went on a magical cup run from the absolute bottom of the league to defeating the Bruins in Game 7 of the finals. Now they have a target on their backs going against a young, hungry Vancouver team who impressed me against Minnesota in the prior round. St. Louis is without Bouwmeester on the back end which could put some additional pressure on Binnington. I considered taking the Canucks to win the series. However, the Blues could turn it on similar to the Bruins and I would rather be wrong about this game and adjust then be on the hook for a series bet. I am looking for Vancouver's young talent to be too much for the Blues tonight and take a 1-0 series lead. GL.
